The Utah game "keeps me up at night."

Nice to know that he considers losing by 44 on the road A whomping and worthy of exacting payback. We need hunger and fire in their bellies, and a determination to get that sour taste of defeat out of their mouths.

One of the things I like about Riley Nelson is he respects every opponent. The Utah answer was pretty obvious and predictable - but after that he didn't say ND in South Bend, or Georgia Tech, or even BSU. He said USU and acknowledged that they nearly had us beat after beating us up the prior year. No locker room quotes to hang in opponent locker rooms - other than how much he respects them and credits them for their recent success.



Maybe I am naive at age 61 - but I think Riley Nelson is just being real. No calculated agenda.

Intensity without focus gets us losses like what happened last year agains utah and TCU, where lack of focus caused bad execution and easy scores for the opponent. I just hope that all this attention to utah isn't a distraction for the team. When BYU meets utah up at RES, they need to be 100% focused and not distracted by a 44 point loss at home last year.

Agreed! Not just another game!

I also agree, this could be the first year we come out more fired up than them. I trust Bronco to keep the team focused, but Riley will get them pumped up. This is the biggest game of the year!

Unfortunately, last year BYU came out more fired up than the utes. I can't remember seeing BYU players more pumped up for a game than the first 2 quarters of last years utah game.

There is no predicting what will happen 9-15. However, my gut tells me that RN will provide enough in the way of leadership improvement to make this a completely different game than last year. I doubt there will be any delay of game penalties coming off of a time out. I doubt RN will fail to run for an easy 1st down when given the opportunity. I doubt RN will be featured on "CMON MAN" for mismanaging a bad snap in the end zone. He might make some bad throws and create a couple of turnovers. I'll forgive him because he isn't a self absorbed whimp that is afraid of taking a hit for his teamates and fans. I'm just hoping for a very, very, physical game. It will be a lot easier to get ready for Boise if they beat Utah. :evil: :evil: :evil:

Wow. Scathing indictment of last years QB. And I completely concur.

BYU is always "fired up" for the utah game. I don't think I have seen a game this decade where they don't come out "fired up". I have seen a lot of bad execution though in the first half of games, or lapses in concentration that cost us drives or scores. I don't think there is 1 player on BYU's team that doesn't want to beat the utes more than any other team on the sched, but if that emotion causes lack of focus than it is a bad thing.

I disagree big time. We seem to play somewhat scared in our games against the frUtes. Scared to loose, not pumped up, angry, or ready to pummel them.



How else do you explain the fact that Bronco's teams have never beat them decidedly? We have clearly had a better team in certain years, and not just a few points better. They just seem to approach this game much differently than we do. We are more timid and less confident.



Don't give me the canned "lack of execution" answer. Sometimes it's about strategy, leadership, mental toughness, and the will to win. These factors drive execution.

Emotion focused into execution results in games like the last UCLA game. Granted that was at home vs a lesser opponent. My point is that BYU is capable, with good leadership, of doing both. Add Boise State 5 days later, and that would be something to be inspired by.

I don't know what it is about the utes but BYU seems to come out and fall apart in those games. Max Hall had his worst games against the utes. Did he sound emotionless after the 09 game? There has never been a lack of emotion, it is a lack of focus which causes bad execution as to why our better teams have struggled against them. If you look back over the last 10 games against them, I have never seen a lack of emotion, even in the 06 game BYU looked on fire early and then fell asleep for a couple quarters. I agree about the ucla game scenario. They need to keep the emotion but learn to focus that emotion towards perfect execution and not let the utes get into their heads.
