Will Unga stick around for 2010?

I personally think Harvey makes the jump after this season (sorry in advance Mars). I just don't see the upside for him sticking around. Yes, he will carry more of the load with a new quarterback, but we have seen how Harvey can get beaten up as a season wears on, so that knife cuts both ways. What it likely means is that BYU loses a few more games, and that keeps the Cougars and Harvey out of the national picture. Given the probable success of this season and the departure of Pitta and Hall combined with the recent success of Tahi, Coates, and Vakapuna in the bigs, Harvey would be well advised to put his name in this year.



I know NFLdraft scout has him going in the 4th or 5th round as of today:

Other services have him as high as the third round. He's already 23 years old, and backs have the shortest careers in the NFL, so if he can break 1,000 yards this season and finish healthy, I think he makes the jump.

You think he is a good fit somewhere in the NFL as a draft pick? I'm not really that smart about the NFL.

Unga won't be back next year, IMO. I bet he could get some time somewhere as either a third down/short yardage back or FB. He has nothing left to prove and he's been out of HS for a while.

I'm not sure a move to fullback would help at all. I can't remember the last true fullback who got drafted earlier than the 4th round. Even Owen Schmitt, the best (and craziest) true FB college football has seen this decade, didn't get drafted until the 5th round.

In my opinion, Unga will get picked up by some team as a fullback but could likely end up earning more carries as he proves himself to his team. While I love Harvey and think he is the biggest stud to ever play RB for BYU, I don't think he'll be a stud in the NFL. He's just too good at many different things but not great enough at any one to be a feature back in the NFL. He'll almost certainly be picked up in the later rounds and I don't think a year will make any difference in that regard. He's essentially a proven commodity. So the only question becomes, does he want to forego the chance to play his senior year at BYU and set all kinds of rushing records in order to try to make it in the NFL, or does he want to risk injury during his senior year with a brand new QB and a somewhat new defense and potentially lose his shot at the NFL altogether. It's a tough choice that I don't envy him for having to make but if I were him I would talk to as many people connected with the league and get all the info I could. If it were thought that I would be anywhere down to a 5th round pick, I think I'd jump this year. But if the projections were more like 6th or 7th or maybe even a risk of going undrafted, I think I'd stick around for my senior year. You'll never get that year back once you declare but going out on top of the BYU and college football world would take out some of the sting of failing to make it big in the NFL I think.

The only reason I don't like seeing players leave early is because I really enjoy watching all-time records fall. I would like to see Unga become the all-time leading rusher at BYU.



But I don't hold it against those who decide to leave in order to pursue the career in the NFL. The sooner you can take your money and run the better I guess.

I think it may come down to how much Unga likes his college experience. While the money is a lure, he won't be making the big bucks, and if he loves college life and wants to stick around with his friends and teammates another year, he'll probably stay. If there's nothing keeping him here, he might as well move on. I personally don't see breaking the records as enough to keep him - he just doesn't seem like that kind of guy.

Anyone have insight into how Unga likes it at BYU. I'd guess it's only a plus that he also happens to be from Provo.

I can see Unga having a Lendale White-like NFL career. He's not an NFL feature back but has too much talent to keep him off the field or to put him at FB. With that being said I think he'd be better than Lendale. He runs just as hard, he's just as big, has better vision, moves, and hands. He should and almost most certainly will enter the draft after this year. He was even thinking about it last year so I'm pretty sure he'll go this year.

Even if a team doesn't see him as a starting feature back, he'd be one heck of a special teams guy!

I expect Harvey to put his name up for draft placement, and I expect it to say he get drafted late 2nd round. If Harvey were faster, he would be a day 1 pick. but speed is not his strength, and the NFL is all about speed. having said that, Harvey would be a good AFC type back for Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cincinnati, maybe Philly since Coach Reid loves the BYU guys, especially with pass catching skills.

I'm hoping he stays effective, but his stats stay low enough to not generate enough hype. Then maybe he will come back next year trying to become a 1st day draft pick. I think we will see Tonga make a team as a FB this year and hopefully Unga will do the same after 2010. Then we can have a string of TE's and FB's in the NFL. Maybe Havilli will regrent going to USC since BYU places more FB's in the NFL...

The only reason I think moving to FB MIGHT help is that it would give him a change to show if he can be a good lead blocker. He is pretty good at pass blocking but has shown much run blocking.
