WSU fan here - need some recommendations

I'm headed your way for the WSU-BYU game - planning on staying several days so looking for some help/recommendations on what to do and see.





Will be in Salt Lake early afternoon on Wednesday the 29th and staying there Wednesday night- what should I plan to see and how about some dining recommendations.





Thursday morning/early afternoon - stay in Salt Lake or come down to Provo? Staying at the BW Cottontree; it looks close enought to walk to the stadium - correct? Any BYU pre-game traditions that as an opponent I should see?





Staying in Park City Saturday thru Monday



Plan to golf - what would you recommend in the area (the mountain area around Park City, Midway, Heber city)



Also want to hike a little - thinking of riding to the top of a resort and then wander around on some trails - what place would have the best views, etc.?



Any restaurants in the area that are "can't miss'?



Anything other recommendations for anything else?

If it's your first time in Utah, hope for clear weather because Utah mountains in the fall are truly a colorful delight. While in Salt Lake City, I'd recommend taking the time to tour temple square. There are free tours given all day long and they've done a great job making it a very nice visit.



Cucina Toscana is one of the best Salt Lake City dining experiences if you like Italian and don't mind spending a bit more. If you want cheaper, then I'd recommend finding a Brazillian BBQ place like Rodizio grill. Make sure they have the grilled pineapple and go HUNGRY! VERY HUNGRY



Utah is RIFE with hikes and I would highly recommend getting a book since you could spend your entire week and do nothing but hike. If you're REALLY ambitious you could hike Mt. Timpanogas (probably 6-8 hour roundtrip depending on how fast of a hiker you are) which is one of the tallest peaks int he valley as well as a pretty popular hiking spot. Expect serious elevation though as well as mountain lakes, flowers and stunning views of the valley.



If you're in Provo, another hike that is probably more like an hour commitment is the Stewart Falls hike. Ends in a pretty waterfall, not at all strenuous and I've seen moose on that trail before. Again, highly recommend finding your way into the mountains on a hike. You could also "Hike the Y" which takes you up a desert path to the giant "Y" on the mountain. Not nearly as pretty as Stewart falls, but lots of tradition in that Hike and great views of the valley



Things to do in Provo: You can tour Campus. Lots of effort keeps it looking top shape year round and with the mountain backdrop it's wonderful to walk around. BYU does have a museum you could visit with a cafe on top for lunch that does a pretty good job with food. Their dessert brownies are also a caloric treat. One of BYU's oldest buildings is the Maeser building on south campus with great views overlooking South Provo and the Science building has tons of interactive exhibits you can play with if you walk in the main entrance.



Places to eat in Provo: One campus hotspot is JDAWGS south of campus. I generally don't like hotdogs, but these are something else entirely. Get a Polish with special sauce and an Apple Beer.



The Wilkinson Student Center has a dining cafeteria along with the campus bookstore. Both are at least interesting visits.



More expensive dining in Provo is Los Hermanos or Chef's table.



It's also not to far of a drive to head up to Aspen Grove up Provo Canyon. It's also very nice up there.

Of course, you have to visit Temple Square. There's more to do there then you would think. I would recommend the Museum of Church History and Art.

As for hiking, you have to go up to the Y on the mountain in Provo. Nice little steep hike with several lookout points.



As someone who lives outside of Utah, those are the things that I like to do when I visit.

I think traffic gets unbearable on game days so I’d probably get to Provo earlier rather than later on "Thursday. I’m a Utah fan so I can’t offer suggestions regarding game day activities but I hear one thing BYU may be lacking is a high energy exciting game day experience. Now if you come to SLC on November 3 I can hook you up. ;-)



Great golf in the Park City/Heber/Midway area is plentiful

Wastach Mountain (I prefer the Lake Course to the Mountain Course)

Crater Lake (Formerly known as The Homestead) Awesome views of the Heber Valley



Park City Mountain Resort is almost as much fun in the summer as it is for skiing.

If you're looking for some lower-key but good places to eat, here's a list of restaurants that have been featured on Food Network's Triple D (most are in Salt Lake City):

If you're looking for a good burger in Provo area, JCW's is close to the stadium in Provo, State Street Grill in American Fork and Chubby's in Pleasant Grove are also good bets. For BBQ, try Five Star in Orem and The Smoking Apple in Lindon.

Sean's Smokehouse in Saratoga Springs has fantastic BBQ as well, if you're willing to go a few miles west of I-15.

You gotta go up Provo Canyon. Robert Redford's Sundance ski resort has as beautiful of scenery as any and you could drive up, hike, then finish driving around the Alpine Loop. Too bad the game is not later in the season - Autumn leaves are spectacular.



Go back up Provo Canyon and visit Midway and Heber City. Drive up Snake Creek, Lake Creek, or Center Creek for scenery. You will see deer in evenings - maybe elk. You could stay at The Homestead or at Zermatt in Midway if you want something very nice. Holiday Inn in Heber for more affordable.



Rent a Jet Ski on Deer Creek Resevoir if you like riding those.



But my favorite would be to drive out Daniel's Canyon on HWY 40 - the old route to Denver - about 45 minutes to Daniel Summit Lodge. They have nice cabins. A great place for a country breakfast. Great hikes. Phenomenal views.



Then drive over to Strawberry Resevoir 15 minutes further and take in the sights or hike or rent a four wheeler - come back in winter and rent a snowmobile.



Find Charlie's Trout Creek or some other place to rent a boat and go trout fishing. Daniel's Summit Lodge can advise you who is best to outfit you for the trout fishing.



I grew up in Heber Valley - but live out of state - or I would have more advice.



PS be sure to stop and look and hike at Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon. Water spills right down massive cliffs. Back in the day - there was a tram to take you up to the top of the cliffs.



See if the Heber Creeper is still running. If it is - may also find it under Wasatch Mountain Historic Railroad - it takes you through the fields, along the river, around Deer Creek Resevoir and then along Provo River down Provo Canyon to about where Bridal Veil Falls is. Spectacular scenery. They may serve dinner on the train - not sure.



Heber City is less than 30 miles up that spectacular canyon from Lavell Edwards Stadium in Provo. Strawberry Resevoir is about 30 miles further up spectacular Daniel's Csnyon.



Stop at Chicks Cafe - have a scone with honey butter. My grandmother ran that cafe in the 1940ish timeframe - Fay's Cafe. She sold it to her cousin - Chick Hicken (Dahlman) - who changed the name - and the rest is history.



A Train Burger and Shake at Dairy Keen on Main Street in Heber us a must. I once ran a music store sharing their old former building.



Or get a shake at Granny's also on Main Street.



Ironically, my 83 year-old dad has fallen in love with Wendy's. Eats lunch there almost every day - Baconater. But you can get that anywhere - go with the local stuff.



Holiday Lanes Bowling Alley is at the North end of town. My dad got his burgers there for 30 years before Wendy's won him over. Still splits time between them. This Bowling Alley was big news when Bill Jordan (Jordanelle Resevoir is named after him) built it. It is a 60s classic. It has been in several movies as has my dad's gas station and former snowmobile and motorcycle shop. Lots of movies have been filmed in Heber City.



If you really want to rough it - Defa's Dude Ranch is in a beautiful mountain setting in Hanna. Ride Horses. Fish. Cabins are extremely rustic. Homemade bed old mattress. Bring your own sheets, pillow, and sleeping bag. Shared shower and restrooms. But beautiful. An hour or so past Strawberry or access it from Park City side via Kamas Woodland direction - 1 hour or so from Park City. You do not need to stay there to do the horse ride on mountain trails.



Oh - Golf in Midway at the Moutain State Park - 27 holes - spectacular scenery. Homestead may also have a separate golf course.

If you go to golf in Midway at either Solider Hollow or Wasatch as mentioned above, you should hit up Cafe Galleria for pizza. They have a wide variety of unique personal pizza's...I just wish they would make them bigger.

Also, in park city there is a restaurant called Kneaders. Gotta go and get the all you can eat French toast...it is out of this world! So good!

Ice Cream Cone at 9th Street Creamery on 9th East and about 12th north or so right on the edge of campus. You gotta do this unless you do not like real, old-fashioned. Ice cream.

This place blew my mind. They ruined waffles for me forever because no other waffle will ever compare. Even their fries (frites as they say it) have won best in Utah the last couple years in a row.

Wow you guys now got me thinking of a long trip to the game. How about SLC This is the Place park and then drive up Parley Canyon? There is a street car diner that my son wants to go back to. What about Lions House or the new mall at the temple? I remember a restaurant at the top of the Joseph Smith building (I graduated 25 years ago).



BYU Creamery for ice cream and mint brownies and the campus tour at the Alumni House. I loved the hike to the Y at midnight with my girl friend.

If you head up the canyon from this is the place park, it's emigration canyon. You are right though, there is a really good diner up there. It's called Ruth's.

Golf: Wasatch State Park in Heber Valley/Midway is a great golf location for its scenery and price point. Fall colors May not yet be in, but cooler days can make it a great venue. Make sure to get reservations in advance. Can fill up quickly.

Soldier Hollow has also turned into a nice tract. the National Pub Links is there this week, so the course is in great shape at a reasonable price. Also in Heber/Midway.

If you don't mind paying more, and have a club reciprocity, Jeremy Ranch, Red Ledges, promontory point are all great mountain scenery.



Sundance is a wonderful place to visit, hike, dine. Park City is always nice to stroll the main street and a few quaint places and some nice places to eat. The Alpine Skide is fun. You ca always find a few places in Midway or even down at Byu to rent a mountain bike if that's your thing.



Gameday: can be a spectacle all on its own. For the Most Stone Cold Campus for years running, you may find it amusing if not admirable at the absence of drunken fans, pre and post game. Some good tailgate, but not a lot. A few might share, but this crowd is known for its frugality. :-)

Have to try a Cougar Tail at the stadium. It's an 18 inch maple bar donut that satisfies most sweet tooths.

DP Cheessteaks is near your hotel, iirc. Pretty good sandwhiches.

With the WSU Cougars in town - BYU needs to put out a double Cougartail or a visitor tail in chocolate or something.



I have been wondering what Cougar Tail was since I never got any kind of tail at BYU. I am going to lose 10 pounds and then get some tail this season. Maybe a double tail if they have one.

yes. highly recommend eating at the Lion House in Salt Lake City. Not expensive either.

If you're looking for something a little more original, classy, whatever, try Communal in Provo or Pizzeria 712 in Orem. Great, fresh, local food done right.

Maybe they could do a WSU Cougar tail in red rasberry or some other idea. And by the way the Lion House use to be Brigham's house. His summer house is in This is the Place park and doubled as an Ag research station.

And Bib, the cheerleaders are not likely to look your way even if you lose 10 pounds. That may still work at the U, but not in provo ;)



And for guys as old as you and even me, I left out of the definition of the Cougar Tail... "With enough cholesterol and fat to be considered a "widow maker" :)
