Landline recommendation

Have you given up the land line? what did you go with,? Magic Jack, Skype, just a cell phone?

My wife and I just have cell phones.

I still have a landline, but my father in law is a life-long AT&T guy, so I'd be suprised if we did anything different

My wife and I both have cell phones. But when we're out of school and settled I imagine we'll get some sort of landline. My parents have Vonage and have really liked it.

Cell Phones and Skype have done well for us. I can't imagine why I'd use want a landline (except for when I have to explain to old ladies in the ward that my wife has HER OWN phone, just doesn't seem to click for some reason).

I may be a bit backwards, but my wife and I still prefer the landline thing.

We still have a land line because our phone number has been in teh stake directory so long people wouldn't know how else to call us. We are using vonage, and it is working well. We don't pay extra for long distance and that reduces our cell minutes.

I have been using Vonage for 7 years. We have had cell phones for only 4 years (I know, I am late to the party on that one). I would NEVER go landline again for all the "fees". Best "utility" decision we ever made.

I looked up Vonage. It is a VOIP or telephone over the internet. The cost is $25 a month. About the same as the landline but you get the calls forward to your phone or voicemails to email which is nice. Any other advangages?

You say that it is the same cost as a land line but once you get your land line bill you will see all the "fees" added on top of that $25 initial cost. In addition depending on where you live you will need a long distance plan. My first bill when I had a land line had 5 cent charges for calling the neighboring city, literally like calling from provo to orem. That $25 land line bill ended up being $80 something a month. Vonage you just pay the inital price and tax and that is it.

Their are other VOIP options than Vonage, some of which are cheaper and more reliable, or so I've heard. I've never used any kind of VOIP, so I really have no opinion on the matter, but a lot of people only know about Vonage because of their extensive television advertising campaigns. Make sure you check out other options too.

I went with Google Voice using a Magic Jack for no monthly cost. I have had some issues with it working though. Missed calls do go to my cell phone.

About the only reason to have a land line would bein an emergency and cell phones were out our the systems overloaded.

We have cell phones + GV (with magic jack just so my parents can hold a phone in theirs hands when they visit). It's pretty easy to set up. For overseas calls when you can't google voice or skype I like Jajah.com as well. Jajah is great when you absolutely need a land line for the your call. With Jajah you can send your call to any landline phone in the world (you can always send it to a cell phone as well). And you'll never pay more than 1-7 cents a minute (7 cents was from Buenos Aires to Nairobi with a crystal clear connection).
