5 years of sellout and we get a Stadium Expansion - THIS According To Media Day Tweet. So it could be bogus. But, if TH did not say this - he should have.

That makes BYU "Big Time". Big time programs may actually come to Provo with a payout driven by 80,000+ seats, luxury boxes, and ESPN coverage.

We are proud of ourselves as a fan base. And our fan base dwarfs U or BSU or TCU or SDSU or AFA - but we need to rival the fans of Nebraska, Oklahoma, USC, Texas, ND, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Alabama, and Auburn to be truly, truly, "Big Time" fans.

5 seasons of straight sell-outs and maybe we'll talk about it. Or, a built in excuse for him to do nothing when Idaho State is 200 tickets short 4 years from now.

If BYU were 200 tickets short, that would not be a sell out and thus there would not be an expansion. He is calling out the fan base, step it up and sell out. ND sells out every year without fail. If BYU were doing that, then we would need a larger stadium and it would generate more revenue for the program. There is no need to have an 80000 seat stadium if the fans get sqeemish about sitting the cold for a couple hours watching idaho state and we don't sell out.

I now love ! as much as I love the *

I will let BYU LV or Gifford Nielsen explain that one.

Schools with elite fan bases have boosters that gobble up any extra tickets and donate them to employees or the Boy Scouts or Church Groups. They would be embarrassed to let their school sit 200 seats short of a sell-out.

Local car dealers would be giving a pair of free tickets to everyone that test drove a car that week.

So what was our attendance last year. I think some of the late games did not sell out. WAC teams in the evening on school nights does not lead to sell outs.

Some day they will need to expand. Utah is growing and we are growing our fan base. It is expensive to expand and would take a number of years to recoop the investment. But a larger sold out stadium could help to bring in good teams. And put us amoung the elite.

I guess it's time for me to move to Utah and buy season tickets! Would that help?

Seriously, I'm working on getting permission to work from home, which would free me up to move to Utah and be closer to grandchildren. At least that's the reason my wife thinks we're looking at it. The real reason to move, however, would be to attend the games - Football, BBall, Volleyball, maybe even baseball, rugby, and soccer. 8)

I like it. I wish I could do that too. Maybe we need more missionaries in Utah or put a new question in the temple recommend . . . wait scratch that idea.

If TH wants more fans in the standium then he should put a better product out on the field.

Sorry, but if I lived in Provo, I wouldn't shell out $50+ to sit in the cold and watch BYU beat up Idaho State Whatever University, especially when I can watch it from the comfort of my home on BYUtv for free in HD.

Maybe, if I knew the offense was going to be a bit more dynamic or entertaining to watch and we'd get a 45+ point game, but Bronco isn't one to run up the score for entertainment's sake.

Or, if BYU was undefeated heading into November I'd show up to watch us beat up on some no-name school as then the win would mean something.

Call it what you may, but it's motivating the "fair-weather fan" to show that's key. The number of die-hards in relation to the number of "fair-weather" fans is small. Yes, the die-hards will show up come rain, snow or shine, but there just aren't enough of them. Case in point, look at the Oakland A's and Giants.

Giants games are filled with "fair-weather" fans that know next to nothing about baseball. They spend most the game chatting to friends or posting pics of themselves on Facebook while at the game, but at the end of the day Giants games are sold out and merchandise is flying off the shelves.

A's games get 15k fans if they're lucky. 8k isn't uncommon. But you won't find a more devoted or baseball savvy fan base. They can barely keep the light on.

As a GM, which fan base would you rather have?

Cougs_Rule
I'd settle for 58-60 thousands fans, if they all wore BLUE!!!!! c'mon TH shout it out. Quick p aging mind games with build outs. It's not happening. This fan base, after a bad season or bad home schedule will never fill an 80k stadium.

60k fans per home game places us in about the top 25 for attendance. 80K per game gets you in the top 15, on par with the likes of Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Still, 60K places you in the top of the Big 12 (behind Texas and Oklahoma), top of the ACC (behind Clemson, Florida State, and Virginia Tech) and top of the PAC 12 (behind USC and Washington...and UCLA in a good year).

BYU is doing fine in attendance, but not elite. Nothing wrong with that. Most PAC 12 fans outside of Utah don't believe you if you tell them that LES seats 64K and consistently gets 60K at the game. They are dumbfounded when they learn the truth that BYU draws better than most PAC 12 schools.

The only thing I can imagine making BYU expand is Utah expanding by another 10,000+.

Exactly. You are a typical fair weather fan. Elite programs have fans more dedicated than that. Try buying a 7 or 8 game season ticket at nearly double BYU prices to watch Florida pummel Florida International in the Heat and Humidity.

This is the old Chicken and the Egg question - which came first - the elite fan base or the elite team.

Amazingly we are OK with a Top 25-30 fan base, but look for scapegoats any time we are just a top 25 team - see 2011 for example.

The attendance stats also reflect how much SEC and Big Ten fans love their football. If BYU were in the SEC in 2011, they would have been 9th in attendance behind Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, South Carolina, and Arkansas and barely ahead of Kentucky (SEC additions Texas A&M and Mizzou are also ahead of BYU in attendence). If BYU were in the Big Ten in 2011, they would have been 8th in attendance behind Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa.

The pathetic thing is that Pac 12 attendance leader USC would only rank 8th in the SEC (9th after the addition of A&M) and 6th in the Big Ten (barely ahead of Michigan State).

Definitely. There is a reason why Jim Delaney and Mike Slive wield so much power on the college football landscape. As you mention, 17 of the top 25 teams (in attendance figures) are from the Big Ten and SEC. They also hold 11 of the top 12 spots. All are in the top 50. "Low" performers like Minnesota and Illinois (about 47-50K per game), still beat the best of the Big East (current or 2013 members).

The Big 12, outside of Texas (100K) and Oklahoma (85K), is pretty pedestrian. Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Texas Tech, and Iowa State get 53-57K, but Kansas St., Kansas, Baylor, and TCU are under 50K per game. (but TCU's attendance should grow with the stadium upgrades).

If Florida St. and Clemson joined the Big 12 (each at about 77-78K per game), they would instantly help the Big 12's numbers. ..and Notre Dame (80K) obviously would help as well.

No, I am not the typical fair weather fan. The typical fair weather fan might show up to one game in season. How many BYU fans are there? Millions. Most will go an entire year without showing up to a game. That includes fans living in Utah.

This isn't a chicken before the egg scenario. Elite teams attract fans. Bottomline. No ifs ands or buts about it. Demand for seats skyrocket when a team wins. Win consistently, and you'll have a high-volume of fans consistently.

When was the last time BYU did something truly great on a national level? Nearly 20 years ago. When was the last time Florida did something on a national level?

- 2007, BCS Championship game

- 2009, BCS National Champions

- 2010, AllState Sugar Bowl Champions

2011 was the first time since 1989 Florida finished the season unranked. How many times since 1989 has BYU finished a season unranked?

Win, and the fans will be there. Actually compete on a national level, rather than talk about it, and the fans will be there. IF, BYU can get to a point where it is actually competing at a national level more frequently than once every 20 years then I see no reason why we couldn't fill 80,000 seats.
C
Cougarbib
That explains why So. Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas are ahead of BYU. Wait - it doesn't.

It does not explain why USC, Oregon and others are not in the Top 10. And it does not explain why TCU and BSU are so low.

But someone above noted that people back EAST and especially the SOUTH EAST, take football much more seriously than people out west.

A fair weather fan is not the fan that only comes to a game or two a year. Some of them can only afford a game or two and some are CASUAL fans.

A fair weather fan looks like this:

I have the means to go, and live nearby, but only go for big name opponents and when THE WEATHER is good.

They go to the game late and leave early to avoid traffic.

They show up in an ALOHA shirt instead of wearing BLUE - been guilty of this last point myself.

If a fan cannot afford the cost of stadium attendance - they are not fair weather. It is those that actually have the means and sometimes even the tickets that choose not to go or leave when the score gets lop-sided in either direction or leave because the get a little hot, tired, cold, or bored that are FAIR WEATHER fans.

We are all probably a little guilty at times.
