Scapegoat for 2012 Season???

Byu has had at least one player or coach for the last 3 seasons, who will it be this year?

Webber?

Doman?

Omer ( or has he already been "pasture-ized"?)

Reynolds?



Players:

Nelson?

Oline?

TE group?



I really would be interested to see what y'all come up with.

I vote for no scapegoats and a 13-0 season.

It will be Nelson and his absterisks. He will not play as well vs really good defenses as he does against cupcakes. You heard it here.

Fortunately for him, Jake gets a break. Timing is everything. No Rising Tide. No Boats to Lift. No Oats and Boats. No 2 QB. Jake will have a perfect season holding a clip board and wearing a red shirt while The ND transfer spends the season lowering Kansas fan expectations - who will be looking forward to next season by mid season. Hopefully Jake's entourage will be smart enough to not try to jack expectations through the roof in 2013 and maybe Jake can enjoy some sanity in his Jayhawk career while shooting for 6-6 and a minor bowl.



Meanwhile - Riley Nelson's weak arm but strong legs and leadership will try to survive four brutal road games including games against at least 3 teams ranked higher than BYU in pre-season polls. That tide will not lift all of the boats high enough to avoid some heat from opposing defenses and from BYU fans.

It is very interesting how folks are just not as excited about RN as they were about JH. Not all, but, it's almost like the stock market where pricing is determined by expectations.

At one level, this is kind of sad for RN that some are hamstringing him. At another level, it's probably much more reasonable.

Agree. Fans are too worried about the Greek economy and economic issues surfacing in Spain and Italy. But, to be clear, I think Riley will play well, barring injury, and lead this team through a fun and exciting season. He will probably High Five Touchdown Jesus or do something spontaneous and hilarious - because he is spontaneous.



I fully expect Riley Nelson to be one of my favorite BYU QBs by season end - I am just not expecting a Heisman Trophy, NC, BCS Bowl, Undefeated Season, NFL Career, etc., - although all things are certainly possible. I expected the same or less going into 1984. Seriously. Imagine if 1984 had played out all season on ESPN. Just imagine. The most magical seasons are the ones that were least expected.

It's complete nonsense that "fan expectations" somehow affect the play of any football player. Baloney! Players play, some can, some can't, but fans have nothing to do with it. One of the issues we will debate for years is why Heaps, who had all the tools to be great, couldn't complete passes, couldn't hit receivers, couldn't fire up the team, and just couldn't deliver.



I would much rather have an overperforming Riley Nelson than an underperforming Jake Heaps (or anybody else). Under-performers should be benched for somebody who wants to compete. Bronco and Doman probably learned this lesson too late, but they learned it. High expectations should exist for every player on the team, if they don't perform, then you plug in the next guy on the depth chart.
