Top 10 BYU Freshmen

The annual BLUE COUGAR FOOTBALL Top 10 has started. This year the countdown looks at the Top 10 Freshmen.

Vai Sikahema should be on that list.

I second Unga. That guy was a beast

McKay Jacobsen may have had his best season as a freshman - then faded

Some of you might know him as Coach Morgan at West Jordan High School in Utah.

The third member of the 1991 team and highest rated defensive player.

I can't believe that Daniel Coates is in the top two, BUt, that said, I cannot for the life of me believe that someone who earned the designation of "Freshman All American" could possibly be left off this list....



***Edit, we've got a limited number of Freshman All Americans, and it looks like some of them won't make this list, but some of these people on this list weren't Freshman All Americans...

Been trying to find a list of freshman all-americans. this looks like it has a few on it.

Now that the list is complete, here are some responses to the other comments made:



Vancovercougar: “Vai Sikahema should be on that list.”



No he should not. His freshman stats: 7 rushes for 44 yards, 6 kickoff returns for 151 yards, 4 punt returns for 22 yards.

His punt return for a touchdown in the Holiday Bowl was great, but doesn’t earn him a top 10 spot.



ABYUFAN: “I can't believe that Daniel Coates is in the top two, BUt, that said, I cannot for the life of me believe that someone who earned the designation of "Freshman All American" could possibly be left off this list....”



Freshman All-American compares freshmen from a single season with the other freshmen on other teams. This list compares BYU freshmen with other BYU freshmen over a 40 year period. Being a freshman all-american was considered, but I couldn’t justify bumping Daniel Coates (30 receptions, 378 yards, 4 TD) ahead of other players who had better statistical seasons just because Coats was voted Freshman All-American.

So a wide receiver with more catches than a tight end should be on that list above the tight end even though the receiver was average and the tight end exceptional? Your criteria favors the so called skill positions unfairly

You are correct about Vai. I was still at BYU for Vai's freshman year, and that punt return for a TD really stuck in my mind--my suggestion shows both my age and my emotional bias.

4 of BYU's top freshmen of all time are Running backs? Is that because we are so good at putting running backs into the NFL? Your stats skewed this in the wrong direction. 4 running backs is probably 3 too many. 2 defensive linemen is about right; 2 wide receivers is probably one too many,. One Linebacker is probably one too few - and no (as in ZERO) offensive linemen and no tight ends is way way way wrong.



I admit that it's easier to criticize than do, but this list is very easy to criticize...
