My son is a freshman and is trying out for the HS team. He has never played before. Big kid though. Is he going to get killed?

Also he has asked, why do so many people like football. He thinks it is boring. Any answers?

It is boring at first - then the team with integral parts thing kicks in - then it is Friday Night Lights and he will never be the same. Or so they say.

Whether or he gets killed depends on how fast he figures out "hit or be hit." We get a lot of first time kids on the Frosh and JV teams, and the ones who still shy away from contact on the third day or so are the ones who get killed and eventually stop showing up or if they're too proud to quit find a nice spot 3 deep on the frosh team. The ones who figure out that they are going to get hit no matter what, that it's going to ring them hard no matter what, and decide to hit back are the ones who stick. Skill-wise there's not much difference between the pop warner kids and the noobs at the end of the first year. The only difference is how much of the x's and o's they've assimilated.

Good luck to your boy!

Buy your boy a book of basic offensive or defensive theory. A lot of high school coaches dont realize the kids are a lot smarter than they are so they dont bother with that stuff but is probably higher yield than running up hills for high school kids. Just like anything else football is more mental than physical. Even the physical is more balance and position than strength. Send him to the weight room too though.

My first day of contact practice (weighing 102 lb) in high school I ran right over a future yewt nt who was twice my size.

He has done S&C for about 3 years now for the shot put. He flew out today. I don't think he would read a book unless it was part of the Hunger Games series. But I agree that would help him enjoy it.

Be patient. It might take a whole season for him to get comfortable with the game. You never know what will happen when he gets hit a few times. It may get some masculine emotions flowing and he might learn things about himself he never thought were there. If he picks out the most heralded player on the team and stuffs him in the grass you will know he is hooked.

That would be awesome.
