Quite Possibly the Best Ever at BYU

We really may not see another player at BYU this good for a very, very long time. I still don't see why he wasn't a starter from day 1. I don't understand how he only started half the games last year. He has been the best player on the team the last two years, and it's really not close.

Who cares if he starts, if he's in on the first defensive play? He plays plenty. He finishes the games. He finishes plays. He is great. Will be great again this year.

Kyle Van Noy is a supreme athlete. A genuine stud monster. He's my favorite defensive player - by far.

Touched by the finger of God with talent. Mentored and coached along from a deep hole by a wise and supportive coach. TE one we can safely say was "managed" very well by comparison.wouldnt trade that for early starts anyway.



Bryan Kehl was pretty amazing. Leon White? Rob Morris? Weve had some great LB's at BYU.

The Word U hear is that Bronco has tried to respect and honor his talent and playmaking while trying to remind him to play within scheme and system without bridling his enthusiasm.

Our LB corps has been one of BYU's best units for a long time, it's tough to say "best ever" when you've got names like Poppinga, Muirbrook, Morris, Poppinga, Jensen, Kehl, etc.

Yes, but will he play two more years? I could really see him leave BYU early.

Who was the last BYU Linebacker to leave early and then be glad he did so?



There might gave been one. I have not tracked that closely. I just remember the names above as journeyman NFL types. But, I confess - I do not watch NFL games since anout 1995.



And, If Manti Teo can stick it out at ND even after the new coach made derogatory remarks about his recruits vs the inherited guys - KVN can return for his senior year. I know - he lost a year - Jake Heaps is gone - yadayadayada.



Unless KVN is promised Round 1 - legacies are priceless.

KVN isn't like most BYU LBs that have played here.

He heard to earn his time... sitting behind Jameson Frazier and Jadon Wagner. :roll: Anyways... so glad he is starting now.



Best linebacker I've seen since Brian Kehl. Brian was flat out studly. I remember watching Rob Morris play, and he was so "other level". I get the same feeling watching Van Noy, but not quite at a Rob Morris level yet...



Morris played like he was the only guy on defense. He was amazing to watch.

I love how there's just as many clips of him running the ball off of interceptions or fumble recoveries as there are of him making a sack or TFL. 8)



I kinda want to see him line up as a running back after watching that clip. :evil:

KVN would be a great player to play both sides of the ball. Of course very few do that these days. Kyle has the potential to be the best ever at BYU. I think this year he will kick it up a notch.

Totally agree. But the best-of-the best so far have not gone on to dominate at a near franchise or franchise player level in the NFL like a Lawrence Taylor, or the bug-eyed guy the Bears had - Mike Singletary- or the guy that just committed suicide - yeah Junior Seau. Well given LT becoming a thug and demise of Seau - maybe that is OK.



Clearly KVN will get a shot in the NFL. He will probably actually get drafted if he stays at Y 2 years. He might get drafted if he goes early. All of this assumes he stays healthy.



So just how good do you think he is and just how high do you think he will get drafted if he goes this year? Next Year?



There is, however, one big downside to staying - BYU will really struggle in 2013.

I know this will sound like heresy, but I wonder if KVN might have more similarity to Jimmer in the NBA. Phenom in college, a bit undersized in the NFL. I know, I know, he's 220 and pretty ripped. But he plays more of a finesse, speed, and read/instinctive game than a smashmoith game. He will smash a smaller guy but very wisely foot tackle or sweep the legs of larger guys. So, maybe a great safety? More free-side, cover, blitz, rome around kind of guy as opposed to a strong-side guy who, like Andre rich sold out his head, neck and body to make a huge hit. Taking nothing away from his amazing talent, but it will be interesting to see.

Wow, for example, Greg Wrubell just tweeted that Phil Steele has KVN ranked 34th among top 70 OLB's. Gotta believe he's higher, but this might be good news for BYU fans and bad news for KVN. Sounds like he needs to stay his Sr year to improve his draft stock. Lok what Jimmer did by staying.

You are correct. I love KVN and am thrilled he is at BYU but he is too small to play LB in the NFL and too slow to play DB in the NFL. He might be a fantastic safety at the next level.



He is not, and will not end up as, the best ever at BYU. Bryan Kehl and Rob Morris were better. No question KVN is our best defensive player on the team right now, but he has a ways to go to get to the level of those two. And that is just since 96. I would take Leon White and Jason Buck over KVN.



This is not in any way a slight towards KVN, but those names are pretty heady company and KVN has a ways to go to get to that level.

Correct but the OP didn't specify LB, just said he might possibly be the best ever at BYU and I was challenging that with four players on defense.

KVN is special. He was the best player on BYU's team in every game last year. Better than Riley, better than Hoffman, better than anyone else on defense as a Soph. He was better than Kehl as a senior as a Sophomore. He can play the run, he can cover, he can rush the passer, he's a sure tackler, he's a hard hitter, and he knows how to make plays.
