What are the chances BYU lands Jabari?



I'm going to say it's about 20%.

I agree but can't choose the same number as you due to my ODD. I will say 23%.

It's probably like 30-33%. I went with 11-25% in your poll becasue I won't say it's a 50% probablility... yet.

I think a lot is going to decide on his mission. I think if he wants to go on a mission, he's coming to BYU.

For some reason I consider 10% to be a magic number....

I think the chances are good. Here is why:

1. He hasn't ruled BYU out yet. They are in the running.

2. The last time BYU was in the running for a major (nationally recruited) talent, they needed the player to save the program. The program was sinking. The coach was sinking. There was no incentive for the player to come here. Currently, there is a group of talented players to build around. He will play in a conference where he can be a major star and BYU will be able to position itself in the tournament to go deep and get his talent showcased.

3. The Jimmer factor. Jimmer came, he dominated, he left with player of the year honors. The stage is set for POY part 2.

4. The environment factor. He is an LDS kid who, according to reports, is active in the gospel and will appreciate the environment at BYU.

5. Remember what happened to the Player mentioned in item #2 above. He went to the big school and got lost at the end of the bench. He ended up playing for Utah and finishing with a less than awe inspiring career. Don't think that Jabari Parker isn't aware of the risk/reward.

Will it be enough to tip the scales in BYU's favor? I think so. Am I sure? 75%

Plus ESPN has the tv contract and there is BYUtv. His family will be able to watch a lot of his games.

I would change this from a lot to an overwhelming majority. I see most (if not all) of the WCC road games being broadcast on BYUtv in that situation (there were a good amount of them this year)

Is BYU really the best fit for him though if he wants to develop his game for the NBA? We don't play a whole lot of great teams every year. Some people just want wins and they don't care about the level of competition. Others want to be challenged by the best in order to improve and benchmark themselves. It all depends on what motivates him.

If Rose knew soon enough he could schedule some good teams to challenge him and the team.

If he wants just Big Stage hoops then it's Duke Kentucky



If he wants a great coach then it's BYU, Michigan State, or Kansas (Coach K, Pitino, and Calipari are great recruiters and mediocre coaches.(also why Cal and Pitino were terrible NBA coaches).. which is why their players tend not to improve in college (at least the ones that stay around that long... for instances Jones at Kentucky did not improve as a soph, but the talent around him did))



Again though, if he wants to mix faith with hoops, then I think BYU offers everything he wants except the consistently Big Stage (not much we can do for Saint Mary's high school gym, etc.).



Some players don't always want the big stage, and there's ZERO PROOF that the big stage always helps your professional resume'. Look at Jared Sullinger; a guy that got his team deep in the dance but is now slipping in mock drafts because his weaknesses were as apparent as his strengths.



I don't love our chances, but if you consider what he gives up by going to BYU, he gains much more that he couldn't get elsewhere. I have a feeling he knows this, and ultimately he'll have to send the message about what drives him to the school of his choice. I'm not saying that by picking Kentucky over BYU, he's saying he doesn't care about his faith. I'm saying that ultimately, his feelinngs about what BYU offers him and his faith might still not be enough to pass up the Big Stage. In his case, picking Duke, Kansas, or Kentucky means he'll be in a big stage week in and week out and usually win, and like Manti Teo and others, maybe he thinks that his faith isn't affected, regardless of his college destination... and maybe like Teo, he'll find out he was wrong.



Picking the big stage hasn't worked out for all upper tier LDS athletes. For example, Teo has played on TERRIBLE Notre Dame teams that haven't done much (in spite of all their draft picks this year) but he got the spotlight he wanted. Hope it was worth giving up what BYU offers... I doubt it was.

There is a good nucleus on the team if he was to come here. I wonder if there is some stud player he could get to join him at the Y that would make the team awesome. A la J Heaps. We have 4 star Nick Emery and 3 star Eric Mika in that class already.

If Jabari commits to BYU, I would have to believe that some players that were previously untouchable by BYU, will now be recruitable.



I still put our chances at lower than 50%, probably closer to 30%. But these numbers are on the rise as I was at 5-10% a few months ago. Jabari seems like a guy who is looking for a unique experience away from all the attention. He has the attention now. What he seems to want is the experience and maturity that could be gained by going to a unique place.



If he does commit, the sooner the better, especially if he wants to give coach Rose a chance to recruit another amazing player to put around him. But even with the current players we have slated to play around him already, that one year could be a special team!

First of all, let's keep something straight: Chris Burgess <<<< Jabari Parker. CB was a great recruit. Jabari is the #1 recruit. Big difference.



Second. Has anyone stopped to think about the upper class and who would be jilted by JB coming in with Emery and maybe some other big recruit? No problem that JB plays. Can you imagine Carlno the Jr giving up pt to Nick Emery the true fresh? I guess maybe MC could move to the 2 or they could be interchangeable--this problem will exist regardless of JB coming or not. Mc better find some consistency in his game of he risks losing pt to Emery.

Could be very exciting. But it could also spark a huge upper classman disgruntled-ness.



Third, Rose is a great coach partly bc he has so many great variables clicking. But is he as good as Coach K? Really? That would be awesome. BUt there is so much more to neong a head coach than just x and o's. He has coached the Olympic team as well. Well, I guess at least it puts Coach Rose in great company--I'll buy it.



As for chances. I'm still at 30% partly bc I'm hedging. Craig probably has the right guess. 50/50--he either wants the byu experience or the better exposure nationally and to talent to prep him for next level.

We know that the kid is humble and not swayed by the big lights. Rose can get this done. Build a good schedule. Get one of the big preseason tournaments sign up to scase JB and get it done.

According to the LA Times, Chris Burgess was rated second in his class. So, while you are correct, Jabari is certainly a better recruit, maybe the difference isn't as great as you were thinking. The bottom line is that a top 5 recruit can easily get lost on a bench that is as talented as Duke's. He is much less likely to get lost on a bench at BYU.

I would love to see JP commit to the Y. It would not hurt him or his career one bit. But, I don't see it happening sadly. I hope I'm wrong. I love happy endings.

He is now limiting the media access as it has gotten out of hand. This summer he will narrow his list of schools.
