Latest college FB realignment news - BYU to Big East????

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that BYU or Air Force could join the Big East and become the league's 14th member.



"Teams will play eight-game league schedules once the conference expands from eight teams to 12 in 2013," according to the Inquirer. "The conference is expected to grow to 14 teams in 2015. That's when Navy joins for football only. Brigham Young or Air Force is expected to join Navy, according to multiple sources at the spring meetings."



The Big East Best Case Proposed conference would look like this:



uconn/rutgers*/temple/syracuse* (* = rumored move to ACC)

usf/ucf/ecu/navy/army

smu/uh/memphis/lville**/cincy (** = rumored move to B12)

sdsu/bsu/af/byu



Interesting mix of teams which keeps some rivalries together and is geographically palatable.

How is this conference better than independence? Is the ability to say that we are playing for a conference championship the only goal? BYU already has Boise St., Houston, and UCF on future schedules. Air Force and SDSU are the only other schools that would move the needle, and that's because of our MWC history together.



I prefer the schedules we are already working on for 2013 and 2014 and beyond:



Houston, UCF, and Boise State in October, Notre Dame in November. With Hawaii and Utah State on there as well and the continued flexibility to schedule September matchups against Utah and the likes of Texas, Nebraska, West Virginia in DC, etc.



PS. Syracuse is already moving to the ACC by 2014. That's no longer a rumor.

Key point in all of this realignment talk is the dynamic fluidity with proposed changes. ACC is a dead man walking if Clemson, FSU bolt for B12 and VT goes to SEC. Syracuse may decide to stay put as TCU joined Big East and then de-committed to join B12 when offer became available. Given the transitory state, I feel that BYU remaining Indy is the best bet until the dust settles or it becomes apparent that joining a conference is the best way to be considered for a place in the BCS Playoff System.

In other news, the Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Democrats will for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney for president in November.

Well as long as AFA envy doesn't end up as bad as U, TCU, BSU, and SDSU envy seemed to have gone down around here - sure - fine with me - Indy ain't all that bad and if you really think you can't live with paying to beat up cupcakes at home - go look at a typical SEC home schedule.



Plenty of cupcakes at home there too.



Quite frankly - when the dust finally settles -



The SEC will eat whomever it wants to eat except maybe ND

Big 10 will eat just about anyone it wants to eat except SEC and ND

PAC will eat anything west of Texas that it wants and could poach bottom Big 12 if it wants

Big 12 will poach some ACC and any BEAST it wants

ACC will poach BEAST EAST all it wants

BEAST West could have any and all of Conf USA or MWC that it wants



And BYU can probably join in the BEAST WEST mix anytime it wants to.



And BYU could use BEAST as a stepping stone. Maybe a quick step. Ask TCU how that works.



What does this all mean?



BYU Independence is equal to or greater than BEAST - so quit whining about it - and if we end up in BEAST - it does not diminish our chances of getting Big 12 or PAC later - maybe even enhances it - so don't whine about that either.



Nearly a toss-up.

It won't last. It will be like the 16 team WAC, crumbled after a few seasons.

How about a partnership with them. They take the WAC's place and give us 4 games each year in November. We already have an agreement with BSU and Hawaii.

Yeah - BEAST will be desperate - like WAC after losing BSU, UNR, and FSU unexpectedly and while trying to get USU to turn down MWC offer.



It does not take some of us long to regain that old swagger and start thinking we can name our own terms.



Here is another way to look at this.



BEAST goes to 14 teams. Requires all teams to play 9 conference games. Bans OOC games in November following current trends. Currently scheduled BEAST teams try to move to Sept or cancel us. Then how does Independence look.



This scenario is far more likely than BEAST that will not be desperate for games guaranteeing BYU 4 home and away games to fill late OCT and Nov as the WAC did.



Who knows where the dust all settles - in the middle somewhere most likely - and BEAST has not lost its last defection.



But nothing is forever on earth unless sealed in Heaven and this Island of Misfits is a better Island than C-USA or MWC and about on PAR with that Island known as BYU Independence.

With all the controversy about mascot being Cougars and the connotations of that - let's firmly entrench that Hawaii rivalry and lose the USU colors to resolve that controversy - and go to Ocean Blue colors and change our identity



BYU Islanders. DM is on to something. BYU is an island unto itself in so many ways - which is probably why we have remained Independent through all of this.

The Big East is literally no better than the WAC other than it has some sweet basketball schools. It's not taken any more seriously on the East coast than it is here. Hitching BYU's wagon to it will be like hitching our career hopes to Lindsay Lohan. She once had potential to go places but is a train wreck of her former self.

A scheduling agreement with them woudl improve their future tv contract and get their hopes up that we will eventually join them. I would be willing to up it to 6 games which is almost a conference schedule.

I don't see why the Big East would agree to a scheduling deal with BYU. In 2013 they will have 12 football schools. It will increase to 13 and likely 14 by 2015. With 14 teams, they will probably have 9 conference games - that doesn't leave much need to fill in the schedule.



From BYU's perspective, nurture the relationship with Boise State and just keep pursuing matchups against the likes of Houston and UCF. There's no need for any kind of scheduling agreement with the conference.

Only weighing in to say this - I live in Kentucky and I'm die hard BYU fan (talk about living on an island). The Big East rumor intrigues me for no other reason than it would give me an opportunity to finally see BYU live and in person at Louisville or Cincinnati every other year. The downside would be that if BYU leaves independent status an outlander like me will go back to rarely ever seeing BYU on TV. Getting to see the Cougars on TV for every game except Utah last year was nice...real nice. Big East football doesn't equal a lot of TV exposure. Louisville isn't on much here since they left CUSA and played on week nights all the time. The Cards being number two on my list of favorites means I usually have to watch for their score on ESPN's bottom line while watching an SEC or Big 10...11...12 game - the same as I did for years for BYU scores.



IF BYU stays independent, which I hope they do merely for the selfish reason of getting to see them on TV every week, I hope Holmoe will consider scheduling some games this way - Louisville, Cincinnati, Tennessee, and, hope of all hopes, at Kentucky so I can talk some smack to the Wildcat Nation die hards I work with after the Cougs take them to the cleaners.

For what it's worth....

This is worth a ton! Until independence, BYU's TV exposure problem was rampant everywhere outside of Utah. Before moving to Utah, I lived in California and Oregon. I was lucky to catch two or three BYU games on TV per season. Do you know what it's like to watch the game online via a stat tracker while listening to the radio broadcast? Lame!



Now, BYU fans nationwide can see nearly every single game. That is HUGE! Plus, you can watch nearly 75% of the basketball games on TV. Unless the Big East (or Big XII for that matter) can guarantee the new-found TV exposure and access, I stand firmly behind independence.

Ditto for me in the SEC. Saw Miss, TX, TCU games live and then watched the remainder on ESPN or BYUtv. More games that I ever saw when I lived in Utah. Exposure was great and gave me lots of opportunities to discuss the church and a lot of conversations actually delved into church beliefs and practices. Indy is more than just about sports - it is defining BYU and what it represents/stands for. Don't get me wrong - I want us to win every game and on he big stage but I also like the name recognition that is occurring both from a recruiting standpoint and as a missionary tool.

Thank you for proving my point. The big east is made up of teams that until last year were in the WAC or conference USA.



BYU is better than every team in the little east, combined.

Better than most. A few BYU fans are worried about playing the Donkeys even in their most down year in recent memory. But I do agree that the BEAST is largely MWC and CUSA with a little BSU WAC mixed in there.



Hopefully, you will admit that they didn't grab NMSU, SJSU, Idaho, USU, etc., or even NM, WYO, UNLV, CSU, UTEP, etc.



BEAST, C-USA, MWC, and WAC have certainly all dropped a notch from their already low positions in the hierarchy



Nevertheless BEAST remains > MWC which remains > C-USA which remains better than the soon to be extinct WAC.
