2012 questions that I wonder about.

1. What does the secondary look like?

2. Any expectations that the offense will change some of its schemes relative to last year?

3. What will be done to break in a QB for next year as it looks like our 1st and 2nd stringers are seniors?

4. Can BYU beat Utah and Boise State in the same week? I will be at the Boise State game, and a fan has a right to hope for Ws at both those games.

5. Anyone know if players are having problems healing up their spring injuries?

6. Will the O-line be overated again, or is this now a point of focus?

Idk on the first five.



I do not expect the OL to be over-rated as there is no highly touted senior projected as an early NFL draft pick on the roster. Expectations for this OL - unproven Ryker Matthews aside who may or may not be injury prone - will not be very high - so an uninspiring performance should not be surprising.



The OL was supposed to be a team strength in 2011 and was not. IMHO they were not as horrible as some believe - but they did not live up to the hype.



OL will not be a strength of the 2012 team either - but nobody projects them to be.

My guesses



1. The secondary will be the best we've seen in a decade - we not only have experience but depth



2. Riley will try to be a real QB, but against good defense he'll have to revert to running.



3. Nothing will be done to break in a QB for next year



4. No chance we win both Utah and Boise; it was truly poor scheduling and there's a chance we lose both - they're both winnable, but the turnaround and locations in which we play those games makes it that much more difficult. Very very few schools in the country would attempt those 2 games in a 5 day stretch (particularly since we don't practice on sunday)



5. I'm worried about Ryker Matthews (particuarly since he could be relied on heavily) but the reports are he should be ready. The TE position is a worry, Austin Holt (ACL)

Richard Wilson (ACL) Devin Mahina (neck) Not sure will be ready come fall camp and Iona Pritchard might not be 100% yet



6. No idea about the Oline as a whole

You're about 2006 questions short of what I expected to see based on the title of the thread. :D

My question: Do we win any games against any respectable teams this season?



I like Riley, but our WR's will go to waste for the most part and unless Alisa tears it up like I think he can we're in danger of being offensively anemic once again this year against good to great competition. I still don't think we have any TE's to speak of so nothing has changed there for the 3rd year in a row. *sigh* (And for the record we are a TE school. When we don't have one we can rely on we tend to have bad seasons)



I still love the defense. I don't see a dropoff from last year at all which is a great reason to be optimistic. I hope we stay hungry and adopt the approach that the ball is ours and make a concentrated effort to cause turnovers like we did last year. Heaven knows our offense is going to need short fields.

Define which teams are respectable?



I think BYU goes 2-2 in the Big 4 games (@ Utah, @ Boise, @ Notre Dame and @ Georgia Tech).



I think the Washington St, Hawaii, Oregon St and Utah St teams are likely to be "respectable" teams and we'll go 4-0 against them.



I think there's a good chance BYU plays six or seven bowl eligible teams. Hard to imagine a bowl team as not being respectable.

Well you heard the new Offense's mission statement last year from our starting qb: "I expect all our games to be close."



Possible translations?

In fact, there's a good chance that BYU wins eight of the games by 10 or more points.

1- I think the secondary will look pretty good. I am confident with Hadley, Sorenson, and Sampson. I think Sorenson will be much improved this year with a full year under his belt at Safety. My biggest concern in the secondary is the FC and JJ, hopefully he takes off and is much better than Eason. Eason was a huge liability last year.



2- Scheme will be similar, Less gun and more under center to help with PA.

3- The only effort made to break in a QB will be if RN and JL get injured.

4- We can beat Utah and BSU in the same week but will we.... not likely. I only see this happening if we injury Wynn and BSU is having QB trouble.

5-Know clue, but I do think most of our guys will be healed by season starts.

6- OL scares me $***less, after all of the revelations about the problems within the oline I am setting my expectations very low so if they do ok, then I will be happy.

1--Best secondary in the Bronco era. Not even close.

2-Scheme looked the same to me in spring ball as it was at the end of last year. With RN being injury prone, and no Heaps in the wings, I suspect BYU will try to limit RN;s running, which puts more pressure on the Oline to perform.

3-Not gonna happen until November. Then, we might see more of the 2013 guy, who will probably be Hill.

4-If we beat Utah, we win both. If we lose at Utah, we still beat BSU. Yep, calling it now, BYU wins on the donkey turf. And the reasons is simple--they lost a ton last year. QB, RB, Oline, Dline. This is a rebuild year in Boise. They will still be well coached, but lack experience and not be as steady as a result. Plus, losing that QB will be massive for them. Just massive.

5-Many players could have gone in spring, but sat out simply to avoid potential injuries. The players are good to go now. That includes Matthews and Pritchard. Only player I am worried about is Tushaus, but he should be ready for Fall camp.

6-This Oline will be the best BYU has had since 2009 at least. They will be more fit, leaner, quicker, and they are talented. Loaded with 3 and 4* players. Plus, they have something to prove and know it. I like that edge for a change, instead of overhyped.

Iirc - when we beat Okie they returned an experienced OL except at center and that unravelled their offense.



We will be lacking experience at OL. It will show at times.



Bold predictions above - like going 2-2 on the road vs our 4 toughest opponents and going undefeated vs the next 4. Bold. It could happen. They should all be winnable.



If we go 6-2 on those 8 games - that virtually ensures 10-2 going into a Bowl Game where we would be heavily favored.



So - I guess that was an 11-2 prediction someone made.



Doable. But very bold prediction.

We finished in the top 25 last year without a legit and healthy TE (I realize though that it's been our bread and butter)

Any word on Chambers as a DB? I am very excited to see him. I hope he has the kind of year that makes his experience at BYU worth it. I would like to point him out to my 12 year old and say "that is how you get back on your feet".

I think it was just Riley's way of respecting every opponent and not looking past people. Our schedule last season was easier than I expect 2012 to be and yet most of our games were close.

I think it was just Riley's way of respecting every opponent and not looking past people. Our schedule last season was easier than I expect 2012 to be and yet most of our games were close.
