How BYU's 2013 Recruiting Class is Shaping Up

This is shaping up to be a very good class and reflects the new approach that BYU is taking toward recruiting. The players have committed not only want to be at BYU but are also highly prized by other schools.

Bronco's classes seem to keep getting better.

What's interesting to me is that we still have a number of elite/very good athletes that are still indicating a strong interest in BYU and they haven't been offered schollies. The coaches must be extolling the virtues of something that they haven't been able to disclose in the past to generate the type of interest that is out there. I imagine the football camps this summer will see a lot of the potential recruits vying to impress the coaches and garner a schollie.

BYU is sitting on some ofers for now to see how kids do their senior years. Make sure some continue to develop while giving late bloomers a chance as well. We still have some solid early commits, and will probably get more this summer, but I bet the whole class will not be locked out like it has been in years past. I prefer this new approach.

Even I, will acknowledge that Jake Heap's leadership gave the 2009 Class quite a boost.



But lately - just the Wallkons, 2s and 3s with a rare 4 that made BYU the overachieving success it has been.

Per Scout.com, the recruiting classes of 2011 and 2012 were BYU's worst since at at least 01.

Unfortunately nothing but my own blue goggles.

We have just offered two Jr. College DT (Mataele, Combs) so it looks like Bronco is trying to replenish the loss of our front four with solid players to support what he already landed in 2012. I like the athleticism of the DT - seems like they can play multiple positions on the line.



Also notice that with the recruiting of Phil Ford, he was told to slim down so that he can play the uptempo OR offense that we will be instituting this Fall. Sounds like we are recruiting players that can adjust to fit that offense.

Either the coaching or the recruits aren't getting better.

Scouts rankings are based on two things. Average stars and total number of signings. The last two classes have had 18 and 19 commitments due to returning missionary scholarships which drops our overall ranking.

And you would think that with two tiny classes in a row, BYU could have really held out for the cream of the proverbial crop - but ended up with milk.

By the way, anyone saying BYU is struggling to recruit Poly's is not paying attention. At all.

As of 5/25/12, we have now added 3 more very good Defensive Players:



1. Nathan DeBeikes RB/LB (6-2/196)

2. Kaolo Manumaleuga LB/DE (6-2/250)

3. Ma’ataua Brown - DT (6-5/350)



Recruiting is picking up - these players must be good for BYU to be offering and commiting them so quickly. Would be nice if we land the other 3 DT to get DL depth.

Anyone concerned that a good number of these are JC recruits?

Nope, these are solid 3/4 star guys who had to learn how to be students who can and will step in next year and play a lot. I prefer JC over fresh out of high school, ie more productive use of scholarships.

I was just thinking about the JC recruits. Maybe it is just to plug holes on the DL. We have had FM step in and start on the line in the past. Maybe Bronco feels that we need to win big and now to set our place in the future conference setup. I sure hope it is the later. A sense of urgency is good.

Because we lose 6 DL after this season, there is a need to get at least that many replacements and to get ones with experience/that have seen battle. What I like about the selection of the JC recruits is that they are already stars on their teams and in their conference, and they were being recruiting by big name programs. The JCs also fill in the gaps for other commits that are serving missions.
