Ron Paul Dominates Maine, Nevada State Conventions

I know some of you doubted this would happen, but Mitt still has some work to do.

US News also reported the Romney supporters in Nevada once again circulated false Ron Paul slates trying to trick Paul supporters into voting for Romney supporters (following a trend that has been going on since Colorado). This is on the heels of Romney losing the district conventions of his home state of Massachusetts and a Ron Paul win at the Louisiana district caucuses as well as the Iowa district conventions.

Here's Fox News account of why this is so bad for Romney:

So crazy loon Ron Paul is still working hard to ensure Obama wins reelection... that is great news, for the socialists.

Actually Ron Paul is trying to prevent another socialist who believed in the bank and auto bailouts aka Mitt Obamney from becoming the next president.

There was no difference between McCain and Obama and there is likely even less between Romney and Obama. Check out this story about Obamney from NPR.

I guess it's a good thing that rabid Paul supporters believe that Romney is worse than Obama because his best case scenario is ensuring Obama gets reelected.

Sorry JV, but for the sake of the country you need to realize that elections are about winning. They are not about making political statements. Your cheers would last a few weeks and then we'd still be stuck with Obama because RP has zero chance of winning this election. Look, I actually like RP a lot, but we can't afford 4 more years of a socialist president and RP supporters seem to have no problem with this as long as their guy gets some air time.

Repeat after me: "ELECTIONS ARE ABOUT WINNING!"

I'd say this is Romney's biggest problem hawkwing. In the General he won't get the crossover from democrats and independents who believe he is the same as Obama. He'll even lose part of the free market wing of the Republican Party.

And at the state conventions mentioned above not all of Paul's support came from Paul supporters. Many of them were Santorum and Gingrich supporters who don't support Romney and his socialist history (ie bank bailouts, romneycare, etc).

And mizzoucoug you should check out the latest Rasmussen and PPP polls that show Paul ahead or even with Romney in a head-head election with Obama. Now I'm with John Q Adams on this one and I think people should “always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” But if you only want to talk about winning you should be honest and admit Ron Paul polls just as well or better than Romney against Obama.

The latest polls show that Romney has double digit leads among independents against Obama.

Romney can and will win the election as long as the fringe right doesn't splinter the base.

Ron Paul will never win the election because the main stream media is holding off on pointing out how irrational and devastating Ron Paul would be as president because of his complete lack of a sane foreign policy. The second it will do the most good though for Obama, you know that will come out.
J

Which poll hawkwing? The last five have been statistical ties according to RCP and the independents sure aren't going to Romney in Florida or Pennsylvania.

Americans as a whole support Paul's foreign policy. That is actually what helps him do so well in polling against Obama.

The latest Politico/George Washington Univ poll shows Romney with a 48% to 38% lead over Obama among Independents.

Also, the only one who thinks American's as a whole support Paul's foreign policy are Ron Paul and those 5 or 6 who subscribe to his news letter. American's as a whole do not know anything about his policy, and if they did, they wouldn't support it as a whole. Americans as a whole support nothing, there can never be that kind of consensus. It just doesn't happen.

I saw the article with the 48% to 38% number but when you actually go through their data you can't find it. 16% of their 1000 respondents were independents but their is no breakdown of their support. The number also goes against recent polling data in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida in which Obama does very well among independent voters. Though Romney does seem to do well in Ohio.

So Romney faces two huge problems. 1) He won't be able to rally the base as evidenced by his losses in the various state conventions and 2) He loses independents and democrats in the battleground states.

Of course he does have the benefit of receiving most of his money from the same bankers and military industrialists who support Obama so he has that going for him.

As to the foreign policy, the majority of Americans believe the US should withdraw from the middle east as well as close bases in Germany, Japan and South Korea.

The fact that Romney is starting where he is (essentially tied with Obama) six months out from the election bodes very well for Romney and reflects very poorly on Obama.

These recent caucus "wins" really irrelevant. He simply can't "win" enough of these contests to 1) win the nomination himself or 2) prevent Romney from attaining the necessary number of delegates prior to the convention and thereby forcing a brokered convention.

Paul isn't doing this for the nomination. He's doing this to change and affect the platform of the GOP.

Paul may be doing "so well in polling against Obama" but not in comparison to Romney.

The current RCP average is 46.2 for Obama and 45.5 for Romney while current RCP for Paul is 47.8 for Obama and 40.0 for Paul. Granted, many of those polls are from March.

But even the most recent poll, Rassmussen, is 45-41 for Obama against Paul, but 47-45 with Romney beating Obama.

And current RCP average for Romney is 52.8% and 16% for Paul among GOP voters. You can't win national elections for your party when you're losing 3:1 within that party.

Paul isn't a better primary candidate than Romney, nor is he a better general election candidate.

I disagree about the relevance of the recent state convention upsets by Ron Paul. Romney could still lose the nomination. If he loses Texas or California to Ron Paul he'd likely wouldn't make it to the delegate threshold. Now I do think Romney will win the nomination but the real relevance of these delegate losses will be manifest in Romney's inability to rally the base. These people are the base and they aren't all Ron Paul supporters. And that does not bode well for Romney.

As I've said before, Paul could care less about the platform. No candidate has to accept it. His plan is to keep Romney from winning enough delegates in the first round of voting at the convention then get a brokered convention. If Paul continues to win the state conventions it is possible, though unlikely.

Paulbots are NOT the base of the GOP.

And Romney is not losing California or Texas to Ron Paul. He's up 45-14 over Paul in TX(poll from 4/19-4/22). He's up 37.6-10.8 in CA in most recent RCP average (with no new polls since 4/2).

As I said before it isn’t only Paul supporters who are voting against the Romney slates at the state conventions. At my legislative district convention not a single Romney supporter was elected to be a state delegate and the Ron Paul supporters took less than half of the delegate slots. These are the people who would be calling from phone banks and walking door to door in October – except they won’t – at least not for Romney. And if it is this bad for Romney in Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, you can bet it will be worse in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida and Missouri.

If the anti-Romney sentiment deepens any further and the media report on Paul’s recent delegate wins in a positive manner (see the Houston Chronicle, LA Times and San Jose Mercury News stories I referenced) there is a chance Paul could take either or both of California and Texas. Just before the Virginia primary Romney led Paul 53% to 23% and the result was 59% to 41% for Romney. And that was without any ground game for Paul in Virginia. Things could still go very badly for Romney.

Unfortunately, you are correct. Paulbots are NOT the base of the GOP. Right Wing evangelicals ARE a huge part of that base along with another huge part of the base who are OK with spending as long as a president with an (R) after his name is in charge of the spending. GOPers today lean more to the left than the right (if there is such a paradigm) when it really comes down to it. It's funny to me that the majority of "conservatives" hate Romney and LDS people in general but you use them and their lukewarm interest in Romney to support your claim that Romney is the most electable president. It's going to be interesting to see how long it takes Romney "supporters" to jump ship when Obama's campaign machine starts rolling and exposes Mitt's flip-flops from his past.

Exciting events unfolding for Paul supporters (like myself).

Things don't look bleak for Romney. Fox News is wrong.

From what I understand Paul supporters in Maine and Nevada are successful at getting enough precinct people to go to the state whatever to throw the vote to Paul even though Romney won those states. They are trying to do the same here even though Romney won 62% of the caucus votes . I will do my best to find out when this voting for precinct chairmen occurs and work against Paul. The reasons I will do this are because I do not think Paul's people are any smarter than the rest of us, nor do I think they are any more pure than the rest of us and I reject the idea that Paul is the only one out there that believes in and will work for the Constitution or that he is the only fiscal conservative. Paul's people are doing the same thing to us as they accuse people doing to them, that is using technicalities to nullify votes.

I voted for Paul in the last election. I like his stance on the Constitution and his fiscal conservatism. I could possibly like him or Rand running with Romney. I do not like his supporters deriding the rest of our opinions, our honor and our love of country.
