I get to laugh mercilessly at this email rather than throwing myself into oncoming traffic:

Thank you for being a loyal DIRECTV customer. We appreciate your business and would like to provide an important update regarding your DIRECTV® programming.



Effective May 31, 2012, The Mtn. Network (Ch. 616), a sports network that broadcasts Mountain West Conference collegiate sports, will cease operations and end the broadcasting of their channel. This means the channel will not be available from any television provider, including DIRECTV and its competitors. The Mtn. Network channel is part of DIRECTV CHOICE™ Package (and above) in select regions.



If you would like to continue seeing Mountain West Conference sports in the future, tune to CBS Sports Network (CBS SN) on Channel 613. CBS SN has the rights to some Mountain West Conference broadcasts. Additional televised athletic events from the conference have yet to be determined for the 2012-13 athletic seasons. Please check your program listings at directv.com for times and channels as those events are scheduled in the coming months.

Too bad this could not have happened much sooner. Pretty clear that they lost their meal ticket.

So I'm sure their really happy that they played hardball with BYU and didn't allow any broadcast rights. Now they get to keep all that mtn. money for themselves! ;)

Ah, the circle of life continues....and thus, the conception of the next WAC/MWC iteration begins. Within two years, BYU, having been left out of the BCS, yet again, will rally the top eight to ten teams left over from the WAC, MWC, and possibly some other stragglers and form a new conference where BYUtv, having lost hundreds of thousands of LDS church subsidized dollars, will say, hey, here's an opportunity, and form some union with some channel and ESPN and we'll be off and running in a new conference, this time without the Uties, and will be the big fish in a medium to small pond, where we will dominate and win the Conference in the All sports award most years, All-conference awards in most sports, have our conference foes be happy to have some tv revenue again, but bitter that BYU has the silver spoon, bug bucks, and complete beholdenness; and byu will have gone no where except gained control over our tv rights (which is great).



That's how I see it, anyway. Nothing bad, just the circle of BYU's life.

How will we all react when Louisville and Cincy are added to the Big XII and Air Force and Fresno State are added to the Big east?

All they need to do is get a tv deal as good as the Big east and get BSU and SDSU not to move. Maybe a partnership with the Big East where the OOC games are between the two leagues. Even a 4 team playoff at the end.

IMHO, The MTN ruined a great little conference with an upward trajectory. Now maybe The MWC was doomed un time anyway due to the changing landscape - but The MTN strangled it due to unmitigated ComCast greed.
