I liked the new wrinkles

I'm glad that we finally added more to the playbook or rather used more of the playbook. We ran some conventional screens and some new running plays and I think it had Wyoming confused and on their heels. I hope we keep on adding a few more plays and wrinkles and get them down by the time Utah comes to town. There's no good reason why our offense should ever be shut down by anyone. Let's finish the season on a win streak baby!

Finally, Hall makes some fakes and hands off, and vice-versa. It served to slow the rush, and freeze the DBs. That was great! DiLuigi and Unga really had a day with this!



And the greatest wrinkle? That little fast guy streaking down the sidelines! :P

I love to see new stuff, after 3 straight games of abandoning the screen they went to it twice in a row, and lots of shotgun draw delays etc. But will that work on a better ute or Air Force?

Some wrinkles that seemed to work this game:



Practiced physically in pads all week (NO!).

Took the ball first (what?).

Used J.J. more, and better (screens, etc).

Stretched the field vertically (thanks McKay!).

I do wish we threw more screens and HB passes vs. TCU to make those backers respect that stuff. It would help slow them down a little.



I also liked that we threw the ball over e middle a tiny bit more to the WR position. More slants, ins, etc. I like to see the WR work the middle too, not just Pitta and George.



Anything we can do to make teams defend the whole field, and not just scheme for tendencies, I am all for.

Halfway through the 3rd Q I was wondering what all these new tweaks were. Someone help me out, but why did we pull this stuff out for Wy. Wouldn't that be the ideal situation to sit tight and simply "execute" to perfection everything that Wyoming is expecting???



Does this effectively show our hand to teams that are coming up? I would have loved to pull all these "trick" plays out for Utah and keep them guessing. What's the reasoning behind using it on lowly Wyoming???

I was actually quite frustrated by the new wrinkles. I was quite upset when the first play we ran was a screen pass. I saw the team do things that could have caught TCU off guard. That could have helped neutralize their pass rush. I was upset that we waited for the Wyoming game to do things we should have done against TCU.

Well, I know many of us have been calling for these same wrinkles for WEEKS, and I thought we would see hem vs. TCU, but it never happened. I still think their are more things the OC can add to spice things up, too. I wish we had seen them v. TCU as well, but was glad to see the staff actually make the changes and show us that they were capable of it, and not just stubbornly sticking with their norm. Change from week to week is a good thing.



The think I was most pleased with was how aggressively the D played. The TCU game showed that when we played aggressive, we made plays--or did not let TCU make any themselves. I hope they keep getting after it.

I know what you're saying. One silver lining is that the next three teams have to take time preparing for it, and may dilute the effectiveness of their game preparation...speaking in a Pollyannish sort of way.

That's one of the reasons why I'd be upset if I were a Utah fan. Jordan Wynn is now my starting QB. He missed out on seven games of experience. But because he has now played, TCU has some game film on him to break down and analyze and then exploit this week. If I were a Utah fan (and thank goodness I'm not) I would have preferred to either start Wynn from the start of the year or spring him on TCU with no film, available to evaluate.

Utah was afraid they would lose the Wyoming game if Cain started the 2nd half, plain and simple. No turning back from there.

Yeah, the likely could have lost the Wyoming game. The Utes have gotten by with their "great" defense but they're about to go up against a complete team. A team that can score. That can throw the ball. That can run the ball. That can play smoothering defense - the kind they haven't seen yet. I fully believe the Utes are going to be WORKED for the first time in more than two years (since UNLV 2007). I'll be more surprised if they lose by less than 10 than if they lose by more than 30.
