Best thing that could have happened to John Beck

why is that a good thing? He finally gets the system down there and now he's on his what, fourth team in five years?



I think his next team, if he gets one, is probably his last.

He now can chose which team he goes to for the 1st time since he was drafted. I think he lands in a good place.



If you think it's bad, then just imagine if the Redskins decided to figure the thing out after training camp.

I thought he was released by Miami and signed a one-year deal with Baltimore as a FA? And then, after the one-year deal, he signed a longer term contract with them. That would make this the 3rd time he gets to choose where he goes.

I thought Miami got compensation for Beck from Baltimore (ie trade); (just looked it up, I was totally wrong). Bottom line, I think he's going to end up in better position than if the Redskins took him and the others to training camp and then decided.

Beck will never pan out. He is a mental case. Has the physical tools, just not the head. Dude panics. His NFL days are numbered.

Beck was give two starting opportunities. They weren't great opportunities, but he isn't good enough for the NFL. Some guys don't get two chances. Others get four or five. Beck will find another team to land for a few years, make a few more hundred thousand dollars, but he will never emerge into an quality NFL starting QB.

The best thing that could have happened to John Beck would have been for him to win some of the games that he has started. He definitely didn't get a fair shake in Miami, but he had ample opportunity to win the job in Washington last year, and he just didn't put it all together.

What did anyone else accomplish in those same offenses. Miami had the worst oline in the last 20 years, no receivers, and a broken down running back.



Washington was just as bare particularly once their TE got hurt.



I don't see any reason to write off Beck. Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman won a total of 1 game in their 1st 20 combined starts and John hasn't had that many chances in his entire career; and at least Manning and Aikman had young talent to work with.



I think a team like the KC Chiefs or Dallas Cowboys could win as many if not more games with John as their starter than their vastly overrated current starters and he would be playing at a place with talented receivers, running backs, and decent o-lines. (I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan and I still say that about Romo) . Course I have marginal basis for a true comparison because he hasn't had a chance to show what he would do with a talented team since his last year at the Y.

I wish John Beck the best. Odds are against him - but he is a fighter. And if he doesn't turn into a superbowl MVP - neither did Carter, Sheide, Nielsen, Wilson, Bosco, Walsh, Detmer, Feterik, Doman, or Hall. Or anyone I left out.



Re NFL careers



McMahon was golden in an injury shortened career. Young was golden after a late blooming. Carter was a respected starter for several years iirc. Wilson, Nielsen, Detmer, and Doman and now Beck and Hall had a few moments behind center, but never made it big.



And now we have Riley Nelson who will try to prove in 2012 that he is as good as Brandon Doman was after Luke Staley went down - because BYU has nothing resembling Staley or even Curtis Brown or Harvey Unga going into this season. Nothing resembling Fui or Manase either. Lots of potential - nobody proven.



And a tough schedule.



That is the reality of BYU Football 2012 edition.



I know - I digress. What I am saying is John Beck has done as well or better in the NFL than any realist would have expected.

Not sure if you are implying that John has only made a "few hundred thousand" per year during his go at the NFL, but he has made a lot more than that. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, because you risk sounding, likE some of you, most especially Lawboy, that you are marginalizing John's career earnings and thus his career. Granted it has been unspectacular when compared to qb starters in the nfl, but on the whole, not a bad gig. He has one more go at a team, maybe two. Bt he has made a decent amount of money doing what he loves and gets to actually walk away with his health intact.

Per year.

Maybe I'm just splitting hairs, 100's of Ks kind of hairs, but 200-300k vs say a minimum contract for a back up qb has to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 500k. Maybe I'm wrong. But I know for sure he's been in the millions range for the last several years. He's going for a bigger prize, namely a starting job, but as an alternative, not too bad.

John Beck has not had a real opportunity at Miami they had a team of scrubs and at Washington they had all kinds of injuries. I expect him to get a job somewhere maybe Dallas as a back up.

John Beck has made, in salary and signing bonuses the following amounts:



2007: Signing bonus = $400,000

2007: Salary = $285,000

2008: Salary = $370,000

2009: Salary = $460,000

2010: Salary = $610,000 (Reduced down from $1,101,000 in exchange for 2 more years on deal with Skins)

2010: Roster Bonus = $100,000

2011: Salary = $800,000

2011: Roster Bonus = $100,000



All sum and total, he's grossed $3,125,000 over a five-year career, and that's not including any severances, incentives, or other bonuses. If you make $90,000 a year, it would take you your entire 35 year working career to gross that much.

Plus, after 3 years in the NFL they start contributing insanely to a 401k match, and you have health insurance, incentives, and a killer insurance program.



He should be pretty good to go for the rest of his life if he has been somewhat conservative with his money, and good for him.

Beck hasn't had any legit targets during his career.



Best thing for him would be to end up a backup somewhere with some legit receivers. Learn the system for a year or two and then start.
