Matt Reynolds did this to himself

A BYU player without a world class work ethic is not going to sniff the early rounds of the draft. This kid had all the advantages coming to BYU and never improved; that comes down to hard work and discipline.

It's a shame because we lost a couple top recruits that knew that LT was Matts spot until he left. Our oline has overpromised and under delivered for most of the last decade.

I was thrilled when he came back, but only because I thought he'd step up like a senior should.... never happened.

Wishing we had Grimes back. Haven't seen Weber's labors produce much improvement. I had been in the 'recruit Louis Wong' bandwagon, until recently, obviously.

I don't know if it was Reynolds' work ethic or subpar coaching. But coaching can do a lot to improve ethos.

+1 Our Olines under Grimes were very good and well coached.

BYU's Oline play has been the biggest source of disappointment during the Bronco era. Even under Grimes, that unit failed to develop great individual players. Been a while since BYU had a player drafted and actually do well on the Oline, and that was a staple under LaVell. Our Oline play and players are soft, overweight, and not good enough. It is a huge program failure.

Is it possible that Matt Reynolds did the best he was capable of?

Until I start seeing a list here of BYU OL players going in late or unsigned and then moving up the ranks after NFL coaches correct the BYU coaching flaws - I am more inclined to chalk it up to lack of talent.

It is possible, however, that the game has been changing from pocket protection by guts that were encouraged to pack on bulk to fill gaps and wear down DL to a more mobile DL and OL. Maybe things changed and BYU did not notice and start recruiting a different profile OL.

For that matter - DL has taken a lot of criticism as of late for not mounting a better pass rush.

I will continue to defer to our coaches on this stuff.

Maybe athletes with football at priority 5 playing for coaches with football at priority 5 are doing the best they can vs coaches and players where football is life.

For certain!!! This is just one more confirming piece of data to support some of my seemingly outrageous claims over the past few years about Matt R. He seems like a Nice kid--but it might just stop there. He could have been drafted after his soph or jr seasons--and maybe he should have been. But this is one big piece of data showing what's wrong with Matt and what's wrong with or what's limiting our program. Great, bring on the blue-collar players. And if by chance we get nfl talent like Matt, well, rest assured, we will make him like all the rest of the blue collar guys.

Sorry, but you think Steve Young has not done as much or more to help build the kingdom post college as he may have on a mission? I'm not saying that Matt serving a mission took away his nfl chances. and if we can average 8-9 wins per year, have high character guys with very few HC infractions and not get anybody into the nfl, fine. Great! Thats who we are. No more than Air Force. And maybe that's all we have been and just some, maybe 10s of thousands of fans have been snookered into believing bogus claims/goals of National Championships. Believe that football is 5, because that is what it looks like.

If Bronco is the yin of Crowton's yang, thats a great alternative. But will it take the next coach to move football up the priority list a little bit? If Matt represents all that this program can produce, or in other words all that is both right and what is limiting about this program, I' ll take it over the alternative of a cancelled program and end to athletics.

But if this doesn't improve, forget attracting top recruits that actually have nfl ambitions.

Yup. Agreed. The LT recruits, the Nelson/Heaps debacle, that the Oline (and most empahtically, Reynolds) was in the crossfire of, picking sides. (Guess who Brown and Reynolds picked? I'll give you a hint. It wasn't the guy that hired a personal trainer because he didn't think their summer workouts were very effective, or engaging.)

It's a shame.

What????? The Sr leader Reynolds picked a side? C'mon, this smacks of one-sidedness at the least and conspiracy at the worst. Couldn't be. Say it isn't so.

Oh please? Reynolds didn't get drafted because he liked Nelson better than Heaps? That's the stupidest thing I've read in a very long time. Reynolds didn't get drafted because he wasn't good enough to get drafted. Besides, being able to pick the better QB would probably be a plus, not a minus.

Nope. All reports are, the Oline gained large amounts of wieght, and generally did nothing during summer workouts to keep in shape.

First thing's first! i have said this about a million times:

IN A 3-4 DEFENSE, THE PRESSURE DOESN'T COME FROM THE DEFENSIVE LINE!!! The most a Dline can be expected to do, is to occupy the offensive line, and don't let them push up the field, or laterally. Any criticism that the Dline needs to "step it up" is from uneducated fans who don't know what they are talking about.

In a 3-4 defense, if Olineman and/or fullbacks are getting up field taking on linebackers with a full head of steam, then the Dline hasn't done their job. BUt you haven't seen that in the last 5 years. Right? That's because the big uglies do a good job for BYU.

"No pressure" comes from:

A) defensive scheme (ie not sending extra pressure, linebackers, dbacks)

B) innefective linebackers

c) Dbacks that can't time the snap

D) Sending pressure ("blitzing") from a predictable spot, therefore negating the surprise

or

E) all of the above.

It is "A," most of the time. Bronco generally doesn't send a lot of pressure, and when he does, it is normally pretty predictable.

Oh thank you! The point is, Matt got caught up in lesser things instead of focusing on high end performance. Maybe he believed himself, too much in the hype that surrounded his "most talented Of all the Reynolds, longest arms, best LT, first rund pick, etc, etc, etc., blah, blah, blah. Hmmm, who does that sound like? You're darn right, HEAPS!

maybe instead of picking sides he should have been more worried about high intensity workouts, leaving IT all on the field, leading at least his Oline, not to mention his Offense, etc, etc, etc,. He was a flat out disappointment except for one amazing higlight play.

That dissappointment didn't need to happen. He had the right genes, genealogy, connections, tradition, brothers who paved the way in the nfl, dad for a coach, opportunity to play almost unchallenged at his position, etc, etc, etc.

So, did Matt fail himself? Or did the same system that failed a very fallable freshman fail the Most foreseeable, vaunted Potential NFL-er on the whole team? Seriously, I'm asking.

Now THAT is a legitimate question. Thank you for adding to the collective conversation. I'm very interested to hear people's thoughts on that.

My guess--OK, my hope--is that L Reynolds as the asst Head Coach gets a bit bent out of shape on this and had Bronco take a long, hard look at the offensive line situation, including the position coach. I've got nothing against Weber as a person--I don't know him at all--but his job output seems pedestrian to underwhelming.
C
Cougs_Rule
My few conversations with Weber lead me to believe he is a great guy and well liked by his Oline. Im not sure Roger French's Oline would have the same praise for their coach.

Hopefully Matt not getting drafted casts more light on the problems that many have been criticizing and stats seem to support.

As for disspointment as I mentioned above, only a disappointment as it relates to potential and the nfl. Any kid who can get a D-1 schollie and complete a degree while having served an honorable mission and be a good citizen most parents would be proud. Great job Matt. Now go and get after it.

Do you know the last time BYU had an Oline player drafted? Something that occurred regularly under Roger French is a rarity now. BYU does a poor job developing Oline players into NFL prospects the last decade. The facts do not lie.

Scott Young--2005 OG Round 5

Dustin Rykert 2003 OT Round 6

John Tait 1999 OT Round 1

IF peopl wonder why Utah is starting to catch BYU--and surpass them in recruiting, look no further than NFL Draft picks. Utah is slaughtering us, and I am afraid that the 2012 class was the first of many to tip Utah;s way, unless BYU starts to get more players drafted. This can not be ignored. BYU could lose its graps on top-LDS players.

I have to wonder how many of those drafted out of Utah actually were on BYU's radar. How many could have made it academically, or could have lived the honor code while at BYU? Doesn't change the fact that Utah is destroying BYU in getting guys drafted, and it could mean LDS talent starts looking more at Utah. But Utah does have a huge advantage when it comes to choosing recruits.

Key points. This is two consecutive years without a draft pick. I am really concerned about the program. The following trends need some kind of assessment:

(1) The routine - but virtually inexplicable - losses of humiliation where it appears we are outclassed and (more frequently) out coached.

(2) Each season has a "lesson" to be learned...which usually rescues the team from some crisis - but often comes at about the point when the schedule gets soft.

(3) What appears to be a progressive deterioration of talent at most key offensive positions. So, in sequence...QB: Beck, Hall, Heaps/Nelson. RB: Brown, Unga, DiLuigi/Kariya/Q/Alisa. TE: Harline, Pitta, Holt/Mahina/Matthews.

(4) The lack of players being drafted in the NFL (two consecutive years with no draft picks)

Now, I am not predicting doom...but I do wonder the extent to which these trends are the fruits of some large concerns.

At the end of his Junior year Matt was a "lock" for the draft and quite possibly a first rounder.

If you're Matt, you probably took that to mean you'd arrived or there wasn't much more you needed to do. He probably took his foot off the gas a bit wanting to make sure he stayed healthy. The result...no draft.

Time for Bronco to move football up on the list of priorities. Should be 3rd or 4th behind God, family and education. Players need to eat, breath and sleep football. Clearly, his off-season regimes aren't working.

I seem to remember hearing that while many of the locals felt like Matt had the potential for being a first or early rounder, that he had his interview with the draft committee where they tell people more or else where to expect to be drafted and he was more of a late rounder then and decided to come back for his senior year.

Actually now that I typed that I'm wondering if I'm confusing Reynolds with Jimmer, anyone else remember this story?

You are confusing with Jimmer, I think.

He (Matt Reynolds) was told that he was not guaranteed a 1st rd pick, but I think he was a "lock" (as much as anything in the draft is) to go 3rd or 4th round. Maybe even 2nd round. But the first round is where the money is, as far as guaranteed contracts and signing bonuses, job security, etc.
