HI Rivalry Just Went Up A Notch

Dick Harmon was reporting in the Des News about safety Mike Wadsworth, from HI, that asked to be released, after serving his mission, and transfer to BYU. It was denied. In fact, he was given permission to transfer to any school but BYU. He had tried previously before Chow arrived, appealed to the school, but the decision was upheld. Apparently, he was denied again - rumor has it that Chow is behind the denial. If so, he clearly has demonstrated his disdain for the school. I can't wait to see how this rivalry develops if he is bringing in bad blood because he wasn't offered the HC position upon Lavell's retirement.

surprising that HI can tell a kid what school he can go to. Obviously, he doesn't want to be there, I'd be out of there.

Actually, the kid signed a schollie agreement, so the school has every right to limit where he goes. Many schools will let a kid go free, so long as they are not in-conference, on schedule, or if they recruit against each other, as Hawaii does with BYU on the island. I get why Hawaii said no to this one.



I think the kid is still going to come, but will sit a year, redshirt and pay his own way for 1 years. BYU is not that expensive.

Seems like the kid has a good head on his shoulders (or he's a quitter!?)

Uona Kaveinga did hte same thing, but for differnte reasons.



I think this kid was going to redshirt no matter what anyone. Only difference is to him personally as he does not get a schollie for his redshirt year. He can get it the next year just fine.



Looks like a good boundary corner or SS prospect. Hope he can get that 40 time near 4.5

He should actually stay in Hawaii for the year and just train with that guy that Les Brown worked out with ...

Although should the school want to release him at the end of any year - they get to. Pretty sweet deal for the school, pretty sucky deal for the athlete. It's stupid rules like this that help give the NCAA a bad name...

Even if this transfer isn't a sticking point. I believe it is common knowledge that Chow left with a bitter pill in his mouth. We have a LT series with HI in the coming years. We will also be recruiting Polys from the Island. Will this rivalry rival the Crowton/Meyer rift or take on a different type of intensity?

Wait, you mean to tell me, that Hawaii "owns" an athlete, that he cannot leave or transfer? So what if the kid leaves anyway? is Hawaii going to keep him on scholarship--doubt that. And the new school cannot give him a scholarship? These scholarships are year to year, so if he drops out of Hawaii and matriculates to BYU, he is somehow an indentured servant for his college life? Something does not add up here.

As long as he doesn't duck and cover at the sight of a WR laying some contact on him.

Certainly Hawaii has every right to deny the athletes request. It's still morally wrong to hold an athlete back. Bronco would never do that. It shows zero class - regardless of the "legality" issue. The karma will come back to bite U of HI.

I think the Bo Ryan interview this week really started to blow the lid off this whole indentured servitude thing the NCAA has going. It's complete BS for a coach to be able to cut (er, not renew) a kid's schollie for any reason the coach can imagine AND for that coach to be able to deny the player the right to transfer to any school the coach doesn't like while the coach, who IS getting paid, can go to any school he wants, whenever he wants. The whole thing is so exploitative I can't get over it.

I used to like to read him, but his transfer to the dark side has made him almost UN-enjoyable to read.

1. Hawaii just guaranteed themselves a monumental pounding in Provo



2. We don't need a safety this year anyhow - we do need depth in the future



3. Wadsworth's family is loaded and paying for a year to be a part of this team is exactly what they'll do.



4. This only helps BYU and hurts Hawaii very badly in public opinion and in straight up press.



Let the kid that wouldn't play this year be the martyr and watch Norm Chow burn on his way out of the profession.
