Just heard that the BYU- Utah series will go on for 2013-14, but looks bleak after that unless the PAC goes to an 8 game conference schedule. So start hoping.

Source also claimed that BYU not going to Big XII before 2015, if ever. This person, from you know where, called it last go round, and WVU and TCU. Also called the move to Indy long before announced, and other scheduling news before anyone else.

I believe the info to be solid. So start getting used to Indy.

By the way, the scheduling rumos I have heard include Wisconsin, BC, Nebraska(home/Denver), now Utah, and perhaps one ND game in NYC. OCR Indy to work, these have to be true, along with other regional games of interest.

Start praying.

Bluebrotha was the only one who got everything right last fall. He was mocked relentlessly when everyone else was saying that we were going to the Big XII and he kept telling everyone it wasn't happening. I don't know what his connection is but it is a very good one. He made the rest of the "definitely going" camp look like fools.

Unless something changes significantly, we aren't going to the Big XII.

Personally, I don't know what to think about the Big XII. I think we would be a consistent 7-5, 8-4 team, with the occasional 6-6 or losing season and about every 10 years having a shot at at the conference championship.

I don't know if that is better or worse than Indy where we can't win the big games anyway.

I have pretty much consigned myself to the fact that BYU will remain Indy. And as it relates to the B12, it is due to geography, not anything else. If BYU was located in Missouri, we'd have been in the B12 decades ago.

As to Indy, I think it can work, but it is depdent upon 3 factors, all of which are important.

1)Scheduling balance. BYU needs to have solid annual schedules, and with some great games at LES each year. Has to. We can not become road warriors in the big games, or we end up like Fresno State. Need those rumors of home-home with BC, Wisconsin, 2 more with Nebraska(1 at LES) to be true. Then need to add some regional games back, like AFA or UNLV or even SDSU.

2) We gotta win more than our share of the big games. Winning is a cure all for everything Indy related. Just win, and everything else takes care of itself. See Boise State for details.

3) The November problem needs to be sorted out. And no, I do not mean that BYU needs a murderers row of games in November, but they do need to find a way to get a consistent final game of the year. Whether that becomes BSU or ND, or both over time, this needs to happen. BYU needs to develop a "traditional" type of final season game to look forward to, like we had with Utah previously. Go look at the last 10 years of November games, and they were not that awesome. However, the U game topped it all off, and we need something to replace that. Hawaii will not do it, but ND or BSU certainly could. Make this happen, and Indy gets very attractive schedule-wise.

I love independence. Most BYU fans outside of Utah can now watch nearly every game, every single week. The value of that cannot be overstated.

Also, have you looked at BYU's schedule the next couple of years? It's WAY better than anything in the MWC. I'm planning an October trip this fall to South Bend and then to Atlanta the following weekend. That's awesome! We have 3 PAC 12 teams on the schedule, a game at the smurf turf in Boise, and the second in the rekindled series with Hawaii. Best schedule I've seen in 10 years.

In 2013, we get Texas, Boise St. and Georgia Tech at home. And we also play Notre Dame, Houston, and Hawaii. The gaps will fill in and BYU will be better than fine.

I am one who is 100% in favor of BYU's independence. I don't believe we ever leave it, it is the only way BYU can survive, thought it will be difficult, and in the end I think we will all see the wisdom of independence. BYU and the rest of the college sports world continue to move further and further apart. BYU will not compromise on certain issues, issues the rest of college sports gags at and privately ridicules. I see no conference changing the way they are and the way they do business, just so BYU can get into the conference. Ain't going to happen, and I for one like it this way.

Chalk me up as another fan of indy. Patience will pay dividends.

Just got some more info to confirm what I posted earlier. I know someone who spoke with a 2013 class recruit who said that BYU is telling kids of future universities that games are lined up with that have not been announced yet because firm dates have not been set. Goes along with what I posted previously....

Most fans outside of Utah can't really get excited about watching games against Weber State, Utah State, San Jose State, New Mexico State or Idaho. Even MWC doormats were better than that. I appreciate the top end of the schedule is improving but what does independence give us when we are having a good season and toward the end BCS conference schools are improving their strength of schedule with strong conference matchups. Our strength of schedule drops off the chart playing some of the weakest schools in D1.

Speak for yourself.

Most fans outside Utah, at least those in the North West have found a brave new world being able to watch all of BYU's football games.

2 seasons is much too small a sample size to make any judgments. Utah's mighty BCS schedule has them playing Montana State this year.

Can't make any judgements based on the first two years. Holmoe said the WAC teams were fillers because no other games would be available. 2013 is when we will begin to see what is possible with indepence.

BYU's good home games the last 6 weeks of the season: 0.

Road game.

Road game.

BYE

Home vs. Idaho (WAC).

Road game vs. SJSU (WAC).

Road game vs. NMSU (WAC).

Bowl game vs. MWC.

Of course, the first 9 weeks are phenomenal. Really couldn't be any better. Very fun games, great storylines, and a lot to play for.

Could make a Boise State type interesting finish. Win some visible games early and jump up in the polls - then try to hang high in the polls by beating up teams you are expected to beat up while other ranked teams are taking their lumps and losses.

I have found byu fans outside of utah love independence. those in utah generally want in the big 12. i think it has a lot to do with utah.

consider me a person who believes that independence means the slow winding down of byu football. I don't see it being successful in the current and future climate.

utah is in a better position than byu and it will begin to slowly pay dividends over byu. BYU needs to do something on the national stage (bcs bowl game win). The younger kids weren't around when byu won its title and spanked utah year after year. they have been raised with sugar bowl, fiesta bowl, and pac12 affiliation. the tides are turning and it will affect recruits, maybe not in the shot run, but in the long run i think it will. For those die hard byu fans utah has become a promising and more acceptable alternative. they put more guys in the pros and have a better national brand as of late. they are also in a bcs conference.

i think if byu does not get in a conference the program will continue to fade. It is just too hard to stay relevant as an independent.

hope i am wrong.

Generally agree however note that Utah got little attention last year being in the PAC. I only saw one of their games last year. They might be losing visibility unless they do something big.

In general, I agree with this. When we add all of this stuff up...Utah has passed BYU. If for no other reason, they have accomplished much more in the past 10 years than BYU has...and when they beat BYU, it is usually convincing. When BYU beats Utah, it is when they have one of their better teams and eek out a miracle win.

I think relevance as an independent is not a function of earning relevance, but a function of the impact of conference alignment. If conferences get big enough, scheduling games is going to be really hard. Throw in big conferences creating non-conference scheduling agreements...and it starts getting more difficult.

There is a lot to like about independence...but it could become outdated shortly after getting started.

The problem is, this was even more true in the MWC. And in the Big east.

I would love for the PAC-14 to add BYU and Colorado State. Ain't gonna happen.

Ain't gonna happen,period.

Bt winning is the larger factor. If Utah has subpar seasons, they will be irrelevant in the PAC.

If BYU wins, they at least have ESPN and novelty variables--not dissimilar from Boise state. They beat one or two quality opponents and then ride out their crappy schedule. BYU can do that......if they can beat early and finish strong.

That is true. Independence was definitely the best option we had. Although in the current BCS system if we were in the mwc with boise state we would probably have a relatively easy path to a bcs game, better than our current one anyway. i think the real down fall however was exposure and the mtn.

question. if the big 12 went to 16 as did the big 10 and the others, would that force the pac12 to pick up byu? they would have to add four schools. who would it be? unlv, sdsu, and then who? boise state? byu is obviously the most attractive of any schools left on the west coast.
