According to Greg Wrubell Nick Martineau will not be returning to the team next season.

This leaves 4 schollies available: Noah's Charles' DeMarcus' and Nick's

Haws and Delgado will take 2. Cusick deserves 1.

The only kid I know of that BYU was recruiting for this class that they didn't offer or commit is:

I believe we should get an athletic big to help Davies our underneath - kind like Harstock but with hops / lateral quickness.

Drew has an article up at the Trib with Martineau outing Rose and the team: Said he was asked not to come back, since he graduates early this year. He's "unsure of what he is going to do."

Uhh.... You just got a degree from THE TOP business school in the country, for FREE...

What CAN't you do at this point?

If you add hops/lateral quickness to Harstock's skill-set, you have a lottery pick caliber player. And we don't get those very often...

I totally agree that is the need gap, but our recruiting pool just doesn't seem to yield bouncy athletic post players. In fact, I can't really think of one we've had...ever. Granted I've only been following BYU basketball intensely since the 90's.

Trent Plaisted is probably as close as we've come, but even his dunks paled in comparison to those of most 6'9" to 6'11" leapers in college basketball that most top 40 programs seem to have.

Keena was athletic for sure, but not a leaper...more skilled.

Before anyone jumps on me for this, I'm not suggesting we never have athletic post players. When I picture hops/lateral quickness in the post, I think of guys like Quincy Asay (Baylor) or John Henson (UNC), and we just don't find them in our pool.

So I'm just suggesting that if our hope is to find an athletic 4 on this short notice, we're likely to be disappointed. If we can even find a warm body to clog up some space underneath, it will be an upgrade over the contribution Martineau was going to bring.

I'm nervous for our 4 spot next year because Austin is so foul prone, Sharp is an unknown, and CC/Rogers appear to be unable to stay healthy. It's possible we'll see more Zylstra next year in that role than we'd want...

Hoping for a Carlino-like recruiting gift! :)

There is also the redshirt freshman Harwood but I think he is a 5.

The only reason this is disappointing to me is it seems a bit hypocritical of Rose to pull it on Martineau after three years given Rose's hard line on mission decisions--you tell him before he offers if you are going on a mission or not, and if you say you aren't going on a mission, Rose will hold you to that as an issue of keeping your word and being a man of honor. The disappointment is from the apparent one-way street.

Freshman year: Martineau walks on to the team, plays about 120 minutes.

Sophomore year: Martineau gets a scholarship, plays about 120 minutes.

Junior year: Martineau has a scholarship, plays about 50 minutes behind Carlino, Cusick, Winder, and Zylstra.

Senior year: Martineau drops to 7th on the PG depth chart behind Delgado and Ainge. He has already graduated from BYU with a Bachelor's degree after 3 years. Scholarship not renewed for him to play less than 50 minutes in a season while earning a master's degree.

Sounds extremely fair to me. Walk-on earns scholarship. Scholarship player plays extremely poorly, thus loses the yearly scholarship. Free to walk back onto the team as his discretion.

We all asked for this to happen. We all knew it HAD to.

4-Rogers 6-8, 4/5-Davies 6-9, 5-Austin 6-11.

The 3-spot last year was Abou/Harrison/Zylstra (6-5/6-5/6-6).

How often does BYU offer playing scholarships to graduate students? Martineau is graduating. He's no longer pursuing a bachelor's degree. I have no problem with asking/telling a former walk-on, non-contributing, college graduate to make room for a younger player still seeking his first degree.

It had to be an awkward conversation and I am sure I would have been a bit hurt had I been in Martineau's shoes, but I think it was a good call and a fair call.

Martineau was a non-contributor who was graduating and wanted to stay on scholarship as a practice player while he got his masters. I can see where he is coming from although I am sure he wants to get playing time.

But Rose kept him on scholarship to graduation even though he hadn't panned out as a player. IMO that holds up Rose's end of the bargain.

I feel bad for Martineau because it always hurts to not make the cut, but he played 3 years for a Division 1 school. Most people get cut years before that, so don't cry about it. And sure it stinks to have to pay for school when you thought it was going to be free, but first you got into BYU's grad school, when most people can't, and most people have to pay for school themselves, so don't cry about that either.
