Pfizer, BYU and Celebrex

Finally an update on this!

looks like the trial is scheduled for May after about 6+ years of discovery.



I'm always interested when these trials don't settle, especially when even the possibility for a losing trial could mean a major financial hit to Pfizer, but clearly not enough for them to offer an settlement amount worth taking by the plaintiff who is risking an all or nothing judgement.

I work in the office of research at BYU and a couple months ago, the director here was talking about this lawsuit. BYU's lawyers are apparently confident enough that instead of charging their normal fees for the work, they won't get paid unless BYU wins. If they win, the award will be in the billions of dollars. I can't remember exactly the percentage my director said the lawyers were going to take, but I think it was like 10%.



So, basically the lawyers are risking what's probably hundreds of thousands of dollar of work for the chance at hundreds of millions of dollars. crazy

Well, that all depends on the size of Pfizer's settlement offer. a settlement is a sure thing.



Arguing, even a good case, against a massive drug maker that gets sued all the time is never a sure thing regardless of the possible windfall.



At this point, a settlement amount is all BYU has to lose so clearly the settlement wasn't high enough. Why? perhaps Pfizer thinks they can still win.
