BYU Loses Recruiting Battle with Navy

Defensive end Joseph Champaign, who was offered by BYU months ago, finally chose Navy. He was also offered by Stanford, Air Force, Syracuse, UAB, and Marshall.

His teammate, safety Kori Gaines, committed to BYU a while back, and is still strong in his commitment.

can't be TOO upset about this. Sure, it's nice for BYU to get good players, but I don't mind seeing good players going to play for our services' teams either.

Yeah, I don't follow Navy much either. I've watched bits and pieces of some of their games this year but they don't have the most exciting schedule and I'm too busy right now to watch them.

I think that if I had gone to the academy I would be more interested in AF football. Actually, come to think of it, most of my friends that went to USAFA don't like football either. Something about being forced to attend the games ruins the enjoyment of it for most.

Definitely better to actually be on the team.

Interesting side note, Bart Weiss (AFA, 1985) was my squadron commander at Mildenhall, England and is now the vice Wing Commander (full colonel) at McConnell AFB.

I pull for Navy, simply because their head coach is a member of the faith. So I am sure he is going after good LDS kids for his program. Plus, the Naval Academy is a great institution as well.

They already have done it to everyone on this board, as I am here, and I hosted a TEA party, and because I love the USA, not the USSA, I am on their "list"

I really wouldn't call this a recruiting loss to Navy. Obviously we offered the kid at one point but I think it is readily apparent that that offer had long since dried up. I'm not trying to diminish the quality recruit they landed but with all the other commits that have jumped on the wagon, I think it's safe to say Champaign got left out in the cold. Maybe he never even wanted to come here which is fine but by about the same time Jordan Afo committed, BYU started to narrow their focus on which offers they still wanted to keep out there. And Josh Quezada might be the only HS player to still hold a BYU offer at this point.

Bronco had mentioned that there were 3-4 kids left with viable scholarship offers still, though he is probably only looking to fill 2, maybe 3 spots, and one of those with a JC defender.
