What We Need To Do Differently vs Marquette

Have to start out fast and keep it close. Cannot get down by 25 and finish 15 points behind at half - game will be over.



Based upon game vs Iona:



WeNeed to do a better job of shooting FT. We were 11-20 (55%) vs Iona.



Our FG percentage was good: 30-62 (48%)



However, our 3 point shooting still leaves a lot to be desired 7-20 (35%).



We need stronger rebounding from others besides Davies - we had 39 vs 33 for Iona with 9 offensive boards.



21 Assists, 9 steals and 7 blocks is intense defense.



We can be competitive and possibly win if we bottle the second half and use it for all 4 quarters vs Marquette.

iona put on a clinic in the 1st half..... marquette can do the same for two halves....

Carlino, Abouo and Zylstra need to show up. They collectively stunk and didn't see much playing time in the second half (except for Zylstra).



Why Noah was not utilized in 1st half is beyond me. Carlino was flayling away in first half.



Davies dominated the post but needs to take care of the ball (7 turnovers) and terrible FT shooting.



Surprise, Surprise - Cusick calmed the team down with 8 assists and only one turnover.



Our Frosh - Winder and Harrison - played big time. Way to step up guys - keep it up next game.

Sit Carlino, start Cuisick and Harrison. Bring Abouo off the bench.

If we are playing from in front, then Carlino is not such a bad option, but I still don't know that it's worth the gamble.



No jump passes would be nice.

Hello! Attack the rim! Everybody's game gets better when that happens. Then let the outside happen afterwards. Even Matt's game gets better when he gets to the rim.

Shoot like Iona in the first half, play like BYU in the second half.

Carlino right now is a liability on the court. He rushes and is predictable with his passes.



Based off of tonight's performance I would start Cusick. IMO, lineup against Marquette should be:



Davies

Hartsock

Harrison

Winder

Cusick

That is a great lineup. Everyone on this list played great defense and contributed points - either in assists or shots.



Note: Dave Rose said Demarcus Harrison has been one of the 3 best players in practice this week. Maybe the game is slowing down for him and he can just play w/o having to think. In any case, what a great time to shine. Cusick was a great field general tonight - he just doesn't take high risks like Carlino. Our agressive zone as played in the second half will force teams to beat us from the perimeter - we should employ this against teams that live and die by the 3.

Harrison and Winder were the only guys that even tried to drive to the hole tonight. We need more of this to help open up our offense more

Harrison had 12 points tonight. Glad he showed up and it certainly leaves you wondering what could have been with more playing time during the season. He played within himself, let the game come to him and focused on defense.



Same with Winder.



We desperately need points from our guards. After tonight, I wonder if Carlino would actually be a better SG than PG. Oh well...

I stand by my statement in December that if we wait one more game to bring Carlino into a game, we beat Baylor with Cusick. If we had beat Baylor, no way we are playing a junk play-in game as a 14 seed.



Unfortunately, for the next three years we are going to live and die by Carlino, so we better hope he matures quickly in his decisionmaking.

He is a freshman making freshman mistakes. We have a lot of young players playing inconsistently and making mistakes and gaining experience from making those mistakes.

We're getting a bit of national love after last night. Andy Katz on ESPN has a blip about us in a blog:

He says, "Marquette is getting one of the best 14 seeds that a No. 3 seed has seen with the Cougars coming back to beat Iona."



If we have production from some of the folks that disappeared last night and the continued play from the others, we have a shot.

I think the key to a BYU victory is actually pretty complex, but a lesson BYU learned in half 2 vs. Iona. BYU needs to control the pace against smaller, more athletic teams--like Marquette, and needs to play inside-out ball. Davies and Noah need to get a touch on every possession. In other words, we need to play a slower game, turn it into a half-court set game, and only run when it is obvious. We need to play Utah Jazz ball.



In half one, BYU got run off the court. BYU tried to play up-tempo, but Iona was better at it. BYU played too frantic and turned it over way too often. BYU also took way too many early shots and did not even force Iona to defend. And Iona was just quicker and scored way too many easy hoops as a result.



In half 2, BYU slowed it down, ran half court sets, and those sets were better because our spacing was better, we got better shots, and the ball movement was loads better. BYU made Iona defend longer, tired them out, and got better looks as a result.



Marquette will be like Iona. They play 3 guards and 2 forwards. They will be smaller than us in the post, but they will be loads quicker than us. We need to play to our advantage, and pound it inside early, get good ball movement out of the post, and make them work on D.



IF we settle for too many perimeter shots, or too many quick shots, we will lose. Marquette will not fold in half 2 like Iona.

Rebounding is a huge concern against Marquette. They are strong, athletic and they go hard to the boards. We are going to need Abouo on the court to go get those 50/50 balls.



Also they do have a 6'8" 290 Gardner coming off the bench. In their games I have seen they are the aggressors on D, the boards and driving to the hoop no matter the size of their opponent. I hope aren't just overwhelmed physically.

It sounds like Rose plans to start the same starting 5 against Marquette that he did against Iona. Did he not learn that Harrison and/or Winder need to be on the floor to keep our defense at a high level and give us an edge?? Come on Rose......learn from the past

Very well said. Marquette has talented depth, whereas Iona did not. But they are still short. Run the show through Hartsock and Davies. The guards are there to rack up assists, not 3-point attempts. Defend the 3-point line hard, limit turnovers, and slow down their transition game.

Marquette is not Iona. The gameplan he rolled out and the adjustments he made against the Gaels may not work against Marquette. He should know now that Harrison and Winder are ready to contribute. He may not wait as long as he did against Iona to go to them.



To a certain extent, Harrison was the last option Rose had left. It paid off because finally took advantage of the opportunity given him. Hopefully, he'll be ready again today if Rose needs him.
