Interesting Statistical Observations

So I've been updating my stat spreadsheet. I've got one page that compares the Bronco and Crowton eras. I started it after the change to see what the differences were in the program's results on the field. I noticed some things today when I was updating some stuff:



- Both coaches lost 24 games at BYU. But Bronco has coached 90 games and Crowton 49.

- In those losses, both coaches averaged 7.5 penalties per game.

- Bronco averages 2.8 turnovers per loss and Crowton 3.3.

- Bronco averages 19.2 points scored per loss, Crowton 15.6.

- Bronco averages 35.1 points allowed per loss, Crowton 32.4

- Bronco is 19-7 in games decided by a TD or less, Crowton was 10-10.

- Bronco has 16 losses by 10 or more (.750 of his losses), Crowton has 13 (.542 of his losses).

- Bronco is 38-4 when rushing for more than 150 yards (.905), Crowton was 18-3 (.857).

- Bronco is 9-15 when rushing for fewer than 100 yards (.375), Crowton was 2-16 (.111).

- Bronco has 16 games of 10 or more penalties and Crowton 15.

- Bronco has 22 games of 3 or more turnovers, Crowton 23.

- Bronco's average margin of victory is 21.0 and Crowton's 16.4.

- Bronco's average margin of defeat is 15.9 and Crowtons 16.8.

The crowton years were rough, but have to say 2001 was pretty sweet. I hope Bronco gets at least close to that season once before he retires.

There is really only one thing to draw from this - BYU needs to continue to focus on improving the running game because it wins games.

This, and focus on reducing turnovers as they seem to be a common component of losses.

Strange that Bronco, the defensive guru, scores more points but gives up more points in losses while Crowton, the offensive guru, gave up fewer points but scored fewer points.



I'm not sure what to make of that but it reminds me of the "is bronco an elite d cordinator" thread. Why do we have these games just about every year where the defense just gets lit up?



Maybe it's the Jaime Hill effect driving up the points given up for the Bronco years as Bronco was Crowton's d coordinator. More likely its because TCU joined the league after the Crowton years.

Yeah, I thought was kind of interesting as well. I'm not sure any of these observations mean anything or really tell us anything.



The fact that it took Bronco 90 games to lose 24 when it only Crowton 49 made me look a little deeper.

Drawing conclusions from some of the statistics:



It would be ideal if we are averaging more than 35.1 points per game, and holding opponents to less than 19.2 point per game.



Furthermore, as a goal we should try to average more than 150 yards per game rushing and achieve 250 yards (????) per game passing.

Yes those would be excellent goals to pursue. That kind of production is VERY good.



In the last 114 games, BYU has 27 such games (150 & 250). Their record is 25-2 (.926). BYU's PER in those games is 166.29.



Of course our opponent's final record in those games is 5.2-7.



BYU has had 12 such games (150 & 250) against teams that won 6 or more games, and the record is 10-2 (.833) with the PER in those games of 153.73.

Recommend that you send this information to Greg Wrubell - he eats stats up and frequently shares the information with Bronco.
