After the WCC Tournament Debacle does BYU get into the NCAA

So the Cougars have looked absolutely terrible in the WCC Tournament. Can BYU still get a bid to the NCAA tournament?

Yes, but it took barely beating a sorry San Diego team to get 1 win in the tourney. I really think playing in this sorry conference makes us play down to our competition. (Not to say SM and GU are not better than us because they clearly are.) I just think that when you play against no name teams they will eventually get used to you and beat you, which makes you look really bad. On the upside, nobody cares if you beat SM or GU. Lose lose proposition and I think the players know it.



On the other end of the conference spectrum, take Va Tech for instance. They are the dregs of the conference but they are ultra-familiar with Duke and UNC. Occasionally and eventually they beat one of those teams because they play each other so often. It makes their season look great and is not a big hit to Duke's standing. Win win.



We need out of this conference in the worst way.

Nope. I'm a blue goggled guy. But, this Cougar Basketball team is not ready for prime time. We are lacking guard play and a dominant big man. Losing Jimmer left a huge hole.

We showed time and time again this season we can't beat good teams. Our best win on the season was against GU at home.



We don't deserve to go dancing and I hope we don't go as it will give our guys something to chew on over the next year.

So, do you really think with our level of talent and maturity, we would have had a more successful season in a different conference? One that is more tournament worthy?

I wouldn't mind it. Hard to get up for games against Pepperdine.



No one cares if you beat GU or SMC because even Pepperdine or Portland do it on occasion.

I'm just glad I didn't spend $50 on a tix to witness the team get punched in the face.

Yes we did. An we are missing a solid, dominant guard. The Zags killed us with effective guard play.



Next year ...... (I hate saying that)

Did not look like they deserve to make tournament during last four games. But I hope so. But maybe NIT will be better for development or maybe playing on big stage will teach this team some new things for the future. Who knows? I sure don't. Not excited for selection Sunday like I have been the last few years.

Brings me back to the good old days where we would sweat out a 12 seed and lose in the first round. Lunardi has BYU as a "last four team in" now. That's not good

Unless some miracle healings take place - we will get pounded in the tournament if we make it in and struggle to even win NIT games in our own home court if we end up there.

This is an NIT team. However the NIT can be a great opportunity providing 2-3 home games and if Coach Rose uses it right; he can use Rogers, Harrison and others in order to springboard into next year.



We have the talent and the early home court advantage to actually win the NIT; we're more than likely an extreme underdog in the dance for the 1st game as a 11/12 if we get in. A young team needs confidence and the marriot center provides that while Hartsock gets healthy for the big NIT games.



I see a lot of good coming from the NIT and potentially a better payoff than the NCAAs, if we actually find our way in.

As far as the WCC, the reason BYU struggles with these teams is because their strength is our weakness, which is guard play. Right now our guards are inexperienced and we play against guard oriented teams. BYU is going to be much better next year because our guards will have matured.

What we need is another game next Saturday at home. SMC did it a few years ago when Patty Mills was coming off of an injury. It could show that the injuried guys are back and keep us froming getting rusty with the layoff.



What we have lacked is one guy who can make an open 3. Rogers could have been that guy. The first half of the year we could make that shot and now we can't. I don't think better D teams explain it all.

Yeah, but about half the teams that dance aren't ready for prime time. It's not about being ready, it's about being one of the best 68 teams in the country. I think we are.

Maybe Carlino will be but Cusick has hit his ceiling. I think you have a big problem when you have to rely too much on walk-on players for big minutes for your team. I really don't see how the team is better next year. No reliable 4 and your best defender is leaving. Hopefully Delgado is ready for some big time minutes backing up Winder and Carlino

I was thinking of Winder and Carlino. Both will be better next year.
