Agreed with all of the selections - like the fact that it is completed by coaches - less influence from popular vote by sports writers. The coaches know who they have to game plan for and what scheme they will need to employ to stop the key players for each team. I am especially glad about the USF/Colorairo and Viney/LMU players being selected as they were not always visible to the media. Seems to me that we have lots of talent in the WCC and it shows with the selections that were made. Also like the one-two punch of Davies/Harstock being mentioned - clearly we need them both at full strength for tourney and to be utilized when in the game.

You really agree with Sacre as defensive player of the year??

In looking at the 2013 teams it seems that we will have the same teams vying for top dog based upon returning players with USF coming into the mix:

SMU - Dellevadova, Waldow, Holt

Gonzaga - Pangos, Bell, Harris

BYU - Davies, Carlino

USF - Blackwell, Green

Honestly, most of the local media did not see his selection. It could be that few of us, besides watching him play BYU where he wasn't dominate, saw much of his season.

While I didn't like Sacre as Defensive player of the year, Davies should have received it because BYU owned him, I believe he was a sentimental favorite and a senior to boot (possible going away gift). However, he is the next best player compared to Davies. Redemption will come in tourney.

I'd take Noah over Sacre any day.

Noah averaged 1.6 blocks/game and 0.9 steals. Sacre averaged 1.4 blocks/game and 0.6 steals. Noah outscores Sacre and Sacre only averages 1 more rebound/game than Noah.

Davies, averages 1.3 blocks/game, 1.5 steals/game (wow!) and leads the league in charges taken. Both Davies and Noah make a better case for DPOY than Sacre.

Davies and Noah eat Sacre for lunch.

Sacre as DPOY is purely a political award. Teams had to game plan around Davies and Noah just as much as they had to game plan around Sacre. WCC coaches just didn't want it going to a BYU player. Plane and simple.

As the third best player on GU, Sacre doesn't even belong on the WCC All-Conference team.

This and that. Although I wouldn't take Noah with a bad wheel over Sacre. I hope some of byu guys feel a little slighted and kick some crap at the WCC. GO COUGS!

This! Nothing like a slight to get the blood boiling. They should now have a chip on their shoulder which should inspire them to play better and take the tourney. Some more locker room fodder could lead to greater motivation to prove critics selection process is flawed.

Noah is my defensively POY. No other choice makes sense.

Kind of like when the MWC (2009-10) picked Puktah's David Foster as DPOY when he didn't even make the 1st, or the 2nd, or even the 3rd team all-conference. How can you be the league's DPOY and not be one of the top 15 players in the conference? Jackson Emery should have had the title that year, like he did the following year (2010-11). It was PURELY political.

So true. Foster practically spent half the season injured too.

ESPN's skinny on the issue...

West Coast Player of the Year: BYU’s Noah Hartsock is averaging 16.8 ppg and 1.6 bpg. Saint Mary’s forward Rob Jones is responsible for 14.8 ppg and 10.7 rpg (No. 1 in the West Coast Conference). His teammate Matthew Dellavedova is third in the conference at 15.4 ppg. Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos averaged 13.4 ppg and he’s shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc. Loyola Marymount’s Anthony Ireland (15.5 ppg, 4.8 apg) has been a star, too. All worthy candidates. But I’ll go with Jones. He’s recorded four double-doubles in his last five games. Jones has been vital for the Gaels this season.
