Looks like Harrison is going on a mission

Reports on Rumor Board are that Harrison has decided to go on a mission. I wonder if his decision has any Jabari Parker implications??

This is strange to me. Usually coach Rose doesn't want players who commit to playing 4 straight years to change and there have been reports that Harrison has been homesick and/or unhappy during his time at BYU.

I think his brother has had an influence on him

Nick Martineau

Kyle Collinsworth

Brock Zylstra

Jackson Emery



I see nothing to suggest Rose doesn't want players who go on missions after coming to BYU.

Rose's policy is for the player to determine if and when they will serve a mission before they join the team. that way he can plan for recruiting. However we don't know what he told coach last year.



Anyways it is always good to see our guys serving. I am happy for him. Wonder which mission he will go to?

I have to imagine that if a player that says he has no plans to go and then is "inspired" to go would be more of a good surprise to coach Rose because he gets that the player is actually maturing while there. It may put a little cramp in his plans but when players are just freshmen I doubt it does any serious damage to his plans. He probably had the idea of redshirt anyways so if they come off the mission and play like Austin then it is only a one year setback.

With only 12 scholarships it is hard to work your roster. We started this year without a point guard. It is really easy to have that kind of situation come up if you get a surprise or an injury or two.

I worry more about academics, HC or sudden transfers of players. The point guard situation this year being a prime example and the lack of depth behind Jimmer last year. And Davies last year. If a certain short-sighted point guard had not quit and BD had not been suspended, last year would have been sweeter.



But, then, maybe we would have missed out on Carlino.

Unless I completely mis-read Coach Rose, I would think he would be completely supportive of any of his players deciding to serve a mission, regardless of their original intent - even if it makes things more difficult for recruiting. And even if it may mean losing that player.



In the long run, the mission is MUCH more important than basketball. I hope the rumor is true, and I hope he serves with honor wherever he is called (even Iowa).

I recall a BYUtv piece last year where Rose explained that he's all for missions. However, becasue, unlike football, the hoops staff only deals with 12 schollies and there's less interchangeability between players/positions, he asks the recruits to commit to serve first, serve during, or serve after at the time the schollie offer is made.



It creates real head aches for the coaches when players change their minds like this.



That said, I think DH would do well to serve a mission. Because I think every worthy young man should do so. If it improves his shot selection, so much the better.

If you are referring to Mike Loyd, Rose asked him not to come back. He basically kicked him off. It didn't have anything to do with him quitting.

Are you sure about that? Most of those where dug up after the fact by the press, and made much more dramatic. Not saying they may not be true, I don't know about that, just that's not the reason he didn't come back. Jay Drew made the BD situation about something that it wasn't...I'm not too confident in the presses ability to get things right.

We asked the SMC student section. They knew all about it, of course.

Press rarely gets it right. Other people have to feed them information.



My understanding is Loyd was being a bit casual about things at BYU. If I recall, there was also concern around academics. Plus, I don't buy that Rose was oblivious to Loyd tok'n it up and partying away in SLC. Willing to bet Rose knew or at least had heard rumors. Someone, somewhere likely made a call or two. If I recall correctly, Loyd also was suspended from the team for a few days/games due to breaking team rules.



In the wake of the UCLA article, I think Rose probably handled it just right.



It is too bad, though, that Loyd didn't recognize the opportunity he had, take it seriously, and do what he needed to do on and off the court at BYU to maximize it. We could have used him this year. Course, I highly doubt Jimmer would have had the season he had last year with Loyd getting 10 - 15 min a game. Part of the reason Jimmer played 35+ min/game was because there was no PG other than him.

Whether it was on or off the court or quitting or getting booted - he made some short-sighted choices - and missed a long term opportunity.
