Season Ending Grades

Starters:

Hartsock: A - not sure how it could be anything less. He was, at worst, one of the three best players in the WCC. IMO, the other two would be Dellavedova and Davies.

Davies: B+ - he started out really slow but he was an absolute beast in conference play. He could be the best player in the WCC next year.

Abouo: B - disappeared for stretches of the season. Continued his out-of-control play and never seemed to find a rhythm.

Winder: B - played some good minutes early at the point when it was clear Brock wasn't the answer at the 1. Found his shot, then lost it completely and has found parts of it again. Solid perimeter defender who may have to assume the best perimeter defender role from Chuck next year.

Carlino: B+ - started out like a gang buster. Lost his shot completely, found it for one game and is beginning to find it again. Very good passer who, when he doesn't launch early shots, really runs the offense well.



Bench:

Austin: B+ - no one knew what to expect, but he can hit shots from the outside and has the potential to be a great post defender. Rebounds pretty well, but is very foul prone (almost as bad as Araujo).

Zylstra: B - disappeared in EVERY big game. Was afraid to shoot in those games. Played very well against lesser teams. Needed to step up against the better teams like a captain and team leader should.

Cusick: B - faded late in the year. Was a solid backup PG who stepped up in several road conference games when Carlino was struggling either with his shot or foul trouble.B, B+, B

Harrison: C+ - tried to do too much. Didn't take full advantage of the opportunities he did get.

Sharp: C- - not impressed. He plays hard, but doesn't play well. Maybe he'll become a factor, but right now he's just unfocused energy with no rhyme or rhythm to how he plays.

Rogers: INC - played well early (first 10 games) then a complete non-factor due to injury after that.

Collinsworth: INC - played 12 minutes all year and never took a shot and grabbed all of one rebound (for a supposedly great rebounder).

Martineau: INC - just counting the days until he's no longer on the roster.

Yeah, I'm about on the same page. I don't have any major arguments with any of the grades.



I've like Cusik far more as an additional guard on the floor. I do not like him as the point. Better defender than Carlino.



Zylstra is really a question mark. Like you said, he disappeared in big games, but in others, like yesterday, you were glad someone as capable was around.

Solid evaluation. I agree.

Season isn't over yet.

Z should get a B- at best. His shooting really let us down in some games. And given his mediocre defense, hard to. Justify why he doesn't get a C+. If he would stick to his game and know his limits, he can be very valuable and even gt hot once in a while. Take it to the rim Z, it's how you get your games going. Attack the boards and run the floor. All stuff you do well. But you are not Jimmer, so if you are 3 feet outside the 3 line, quit jackin 3's you rarely hit. Stay in your range dude.

Winder, it seems, you are grading on a handicapped curve. He will be so much better and shows great potential. But I don't know how he gets a B. should be a B- or C+. I don't care that he's a fresh. He could have played better and his level of contribution will increase as will his grade-next year.

I think your grades are, except for Noah Hartsock, overall a little optimistic or maybe based more on future potential than just this season as a whole. Maybe drop everyone a half step.

I think we've had a B/B+ season. I can't see how having most of the players grading out as C/C+ then equals a B/B+ season. The whole is greater than the sum of our parts?

This. At least for bench. Maybe even A- for Noah due to injury. Injury may have cost him WCC Player of the Year unless he heals fast and makes an impact in the Tourney.

You do bring up a good point about the season as a whole. In a way, BYU hit expecatations, in a way they exceeded expectations, and in a way they fell just short of expectations. What a crazy basketball year it's been.

The tourney will not factor into the league awards. I think they come out tomorrow.
