Editor please

I find it interesting that last week I complained that KSL's Karissa Urry, a "ksl.com Contributor", wrote that we were the 3rd place WCC team, when technically we were tied for 2nd with Gonzaga at the time and if the season had abruptly ended at that moment, we would have gotten the seed because of our head-to-head competition. Well, call it prophecy on her part, but we did end up there.



Now today, in another contributed story to KSL entitled BYU: Zags send message to Cougs

she writes,

"With acknowledging the past losses, the Zags took confidence in their most recent shutout."

Someone needs to review her work. In sports, the word shutout means:

a. a preventing of the opposite side from scoring, as in baseball

[or basketball, which at the college level probably hasn't happened in your and my life added together].

b. any game in which one side does not score.



Mistakes happen in writing, and I hate to be nitpicky, but it seems more like she is being asked to write in a subject that she has some understanding, but not the firm grip of a sports writer, and someone should be editing her work. Using the word "shutout" in college basketball is almost akin to saying someone scored a goal in baseball.

From the same article:



"The Cougars definitely took the greatest drop in their field goal percentage, an 18.5 drop (49.3 percent in Provo vs. 30.8 percent in Spokane). The Bulldogs only saw a 2 percent difference (41 percent in Provo vs. 49 percent in Spokane)."



So at first she evidently means that there was an 18.5 percentage POINTS drop in BYU's shooting percentage from the 1st game to the 2nd, but then in describing the change for Gonzaga, she describes dropping 8 percentage points as being a 2% difference. Actually it is a 16% increase (difference), or 8 percentage points. I'm confused as to what she means, and my point.



Is anyone at KSL reviewing what she is writing? I just find that strange that they are allowing someone on their site to write to where no one is checking the context.

Get used to it. Many articles these days are written by volunteers (Vai S, for example ) and/or low paid staffers trying to cut their teeth. It is all about cost cutting and the ongoing financial viabilities of running old school papers while converting to electronic media. Many newspaper orgs are deeply in debt around the country. Des News to their credit, like a few state govts, actually live within the reality that any entity that spends more than it takes in is headed toward "shut out" aka, insolvency and failure, unless they cower or get favors from a Fed govt gone out of bounds.

I saw the headline of the story and didn't even bother to open it. What was the message? If your best player is injured, you'll lose to pretty good teams on the road? What a dumb chick.
