I'm excited about this kid. But why has he not received more offers than USU and Missouri State? Mssouri State????? 60 points is no doubt huge even if they were playing a 1A school, but what's the skinny on this kid? Is he as good as Noah? Then, Great get! But,.......

I love the part that like Hartsock, he's going directly on a mission. While we have received some significant help from players playing a year before their missions, I believe it is far less disruptive to have a guy server the mission and then gives us 4-5 years straight.

It seems that Mo State wins some games - but definitely off the big-time radar. I will have to go look it up to see if they are one of the better lower tier mid majors which is what they are at best.



USU - usually very good. Some argue that they have the best coach in Utah. He has strong ties to Provo HS and Utah County having grown up there. It bodes well for us to beat them out. But USU is an upper tier mid-major at best.



In other words he had offers from the local mid-major but not Okie, Okie State, Mo, K-State, and Kansas as well as an offer from two of the typical LDS athlete schools - BYU and USU. Hard to figure why U did not offer unless they figured it was hopeless to try given the obvious BYU ties.



Hopefully he will turn out to be another player from off-the-radar that overachieves and becomes 1st team All-WCC.

He is still a junior. Most big programs won't offer juniors except for 5 stars like Jabari. He has good blood lines so I am happy about this kid committing.

Mo State barely over .500 this year. They beat lower tier mid-majors pretty consistently and lose to upper tier mid-majors consistently.



BYU had to be an easy choice vs them no matter how you look at it unless he had badly wanted to stay close to home. And you probably do not see many Mo State games on TV.

Guards are so much easier to project than big men at the next level. Brandon Davies didn't have a BYU offer until the summer after his junior year where he dominated the AAU circuit.



I have a great deal of faith in this coaching staffs eye for talent. Since Jimmermania,they've gotten a commitment from Isaac Neilson (who I believe is going to be the best BYU big since Russell Larson - all Neilson did was average 20 rebounds a game in AAU after his junior year) , they've bagged the top scorer in the state of Colorado, Cory Calvert, a 6'4" legacy player that can do a little of everything in Jordan Chatman, a 6'8" stud 4 in Eric Mika, an energy rebounder and defender in 6'8" Braiden Shaw, of course the top 3 players from Lone Peak (one of which is Mika) (Emery is McDonalds all american worthy next year) and now Hartsook (another legacy)... They certainly weren't desperate for players (i.e. BYU didn't have to offer this early unless they really wanted him) and I doubt that Oklahoma or Okie State thought they'd get the services of a Mormon kid anyhow, but those offers might have been coming if Jakob performs well this week in the state tourney.



Coach Rose certainly has a backup plan and a team with good depth, whether or not Jabari Parker decides to become a part of this.



There's such a huge difference between sophomore and junior year (high school) for big guys. Jakob has started filling out and his range is now beyond 3 pt land. Knowing his brothers, I would expect he'll be 6'8" by the time he's done growing. This is 6A Oklahoma hoops we're talking about and Jakob is the leading scorer for a team that has only lost 2 games and #4 rated junior in the state of Oklahoma.

He'll be a solid pickup, a great representative of BYU and he still has another year in high school to improve and 2 years of a mission to fill out and mature. He's a really good kid. One thing going for Jakob that Coach Rose couldn't do for Noah, is that our depth should be to the point that he can afford to be redshirted after his mission. Noah was playing less than 2 months after his mission and we really lost what would have been an awesome year for Noah next season if he had been redshirted his freshman season.



Also another Hartsock brother is nearly 7 feet tall (played DII) and his wife is 6'4" Lindsey (BYU volleyball all america) .... we want this family sold on BYU for the next few decades. No better way to do that than bag the youngest of the Hartsock brothers.
