2013 Cougars

Last night as I watched our Cougars flounder opportunity after opportunity without Noah, it dawned on me that unless next year's additions are a drastic improvement we were looking at the 2013 Cougars.



We lose Noah and Abouo. Both big losses.



From a scoring standpoint, we can probably count on roughly 18 pts from Davies a game next year. Assuming Carlino improves, we can probably count on him for another 18 points. But after those two, it drops off significantly.



Austin may pan out, but I don't see him averaging double digits.



At the 3 we're weak. Zylstra isn't it as I don't see him improving much (he's the same as last year just with more min). Rogers may emerge if he can recover. I certainly favor Rogers over Zylstra, but even Rogers is an unknown. Harrison may or may not be gone and still has a ways to go before he becomes reliable.



At the 2, Winder may step it up, but again I'm not convinced. He's extremely inconsistent. Perhaps a regular role and min would go a long ways with him.



Delgado, I understand, is more of a defensive threat plus he'll be new so I'm not counting on him filling the void.



After last night's performance we're in desperate need of scorers next year, and looking down the bench I'm not sure we have them. Agree?

Hartsock didn't score much last season, so anything can happen in the offseason. I just hope someone is willing to put the work in

Haws is coming back from his mission. I expect more scoring from Austin. Harwood comes off of his redshirt. Wonder what we will get there.

While the loss of Hartsock and Abouo will hurt and we will miss them, I think next years team has the potential to be better. We get back Tyler Haws, and depending on how he comes back, he was a starter for us as a true freshman (ahead of Charles). Hopefully we can get Chris Collinsworth healthy so he is able to contribute. Chris was the starter last year ahead of Brandon to start the season.



Add to those two the fact that Carlino, Winder, Davies, and everyone else will have another year experience, we should be ready to go.

Plus, give these guys time to play without Hartsock and it will not be the same production. They will be much better even with another week or two practicing without Hartsock (hopefully doesn't come to that). It's a little shortsighted to compare last nights team to what will be in 2013.

I don't think its short sided. there are real holes. We may not miss Charles as much as we missed Jax, but I think it will be close. He was the only one with muscle and hustle lat night at times and that helped keep it from turning into a blow-out.

I think two things need to happen to make 2013 successful.

1. Tyler needs to be ready and firing. I think he will with a lot of time after his mission to prepare. Which means either Rogers or Sharp as a back up at the 3.

2. Move Brandon to the 4 and start Nate A. at 5. Nate Austin owned Brandon in a state high school game. With one more year Nate will be a 10 point and 10 rebound guy night and night out. bring Ian off the bench to back up nate. Bring CC off for BRandon



If these two major things happen and of course, MAtt and Anson get better off season--which they will--and whether its Anson or Raul, I think we will be strong at the 2.

And with Matt, Anson, Tyler, Brandon, and Nate--this will be a run and gun team. And then this team could be even better than 2012.



oh and one more thing, drop the Brock.

There were holes in losing Jimmer and Jax. Rose knows how to play to his team's strengths. Next year will bring another good BYU team.

I chose to leave out the comparison of losing Charles vs Jimmer on the offensive side of the ball. That would almost be mocking the sacred.

I do think your two points are spot on though.

My guess is Rose finds a way to start Zylstra again next year because he'll be a Senior. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that CC makes it back healthy. We really need another talented body at the 4

I'm not sure I agree. Z rose to starting fame bc of a good run in summer Greece games-but There wasn't anyone else. Z will come off the bench next year unless he figures out his poor poor shooting. The good news is Rose is not favorable to ineffective players. Look at Nick M. Why did Rose go out and get Raul D? Z's time is limited. It it's the best off the bench that we have right now. He knows the system and while deplorable shooting, knows where he needs to be for the schemes.

As for CC, I'm not sure he's all that talented. He's tough, he's a good defender, but offensively limited. I feel for the guy. Bad luck. Has to be frustrating. But to say he's talented is a bit of a stretch.

I would like to see zylstra and martineau lose thier scholarships :)



I think we will be good. losing hartsock is huge. he has improved a lot every year. it has been amazing to watch him get better every year. hard worker. great leader. will be missed.



carlino will keep getting better and having haws and rogers healthy will be an upgrade.



i see austin replacing noah well. he will be much better next year. if collinsworth can get healthy the team will be better in my opinion.



if we had hawes this year we would probably have lost two games or less. his outside shooting has been sorely needed. having him and rogers healthy will be great.

Zylstra lose his schollie - that's funny. Rose likes him too much. I wonder where Harrison fits in next year if he can improve enough over the off-season and decides to not go on a mission?? He's got the talent to pass Winder at the 2 but you have Delgado coming in next year too.

Wasn't CC highly recruited out of high school?? I think with some proper coaching he could be more than adequate

Rose has already said that he doesn't want to pull scholarships. It sets a bad precedent and can back fire on you in recruiting. There is absolutely 0 chance of Zylstra losing his schollie.

I like Zylstra a lot. That may surprise some of you, as I bag on his defense a lot (which is really really bad).



But he has a fire on the court that not a lot of people have. He is always fired up, and he plays hard. When he is actually scoring, he is pretty fun to watch because he is so crazy and intense that one look from his eyes could melt you. Let's just put it this way, Zylstra's crazy eyed perfect shooting night VS Chuck Norris = a push

I propose we pull the scholies of all non-starters. If they're not good enough to start they shouldn't be on scholarship

Jabari is not coming to byu. Of course a snowball could theoretically exist in hell for at least a few seconds. Besides that would be in 2014.
