What can we expect from Riley during Spring Ball

Just reviewing 2011 BYU Fall Camp Day 10 with Riley Nelson on BYUtv. Fun interview. Don't know why we didn't see him being he starter as this interview showed his attitude, team support and unique personality. He didn't know it at the time, but he had a lot of Jim McMahon in his approach to he game.

Looking for good things from him this year - he is a real gamer.

It'll be interesting to see if Bronco lets Riley go "green" this spring. The previous two springs, Riley was allowed to go live and be hit by the defense. I wonder if that same approach will be taken given his heightened importance to the program.

Good question. However, One of the things that Bronco has always enjoyed about Riley is his mental toughness and his approach to preparing for the game. His attitude is infectious for the team, and I expect to see a lot more fire with the players. BTW Taysom Hill is supposed to really be in great shape going into Spring Ball. He could learn much from Riley and the preparation required to master the game.

I see two main areas where Riley needs to improve, but not sure we will be able to see it in spring ball:

1)Ball security. Needs to turn it over less. Too many turnovers and 50/50 balls. Take fewer chances.

2)Timing passes--especially slants. Riley is never going to beat teams with outs, his arm strength is not suited for those passes. But he can with slants or curls. IF he can do that, and force teams to respect that part of his game, it will open up his ability to make plays down the field, which is already a good strength.

I hope that we incorporate more of the TE/RB into the passing attack coupled with our already stellar WR/SB group so that Riley has an arsenal of options at his disposal. Hopefully the Alisa, Hine, Juice, Pritchard combo at RB will allow for this to happen.

Of course utilizing the TE more implies we have TEs healthy enought to utilize.

Seriously Spiff. I don't ever remember a year where BYU's TE's were so thoroughly decimated. Last season we lost Holt, Wilson and Mahina, and it's possible I'm missing others. We need healthy TE's...

Um, I'm pretty sure Riley knew he had IT more than he was capable at the time of proving that he had IT. Guys like that don't all of a sudden take some magic pill. They ascribe the lack of p laying time or success to other people, coaches, or situations. They believe that at some point the world will discover them as they know themselves to be. I'm not cutting on the guy, just saying those guys have IT. Steve Young had IT as well. So did Ty.

The only differences between Jim master Mahan and Riley, was his height, arm strength, and beer consumption. Otherwise they both already knew they had IT.

No way Bronco or Doman let the hungry like a wolf Defense drill their #1 guy. He has proven himself.

So maybe we should get Riley to up his beer consumption?

That would probably wreck his abs. I think his hair, abs, and teeth are the root of his secret powers and should not be messed with.

It will make his hair shinier, but it will start to fall out as his belly bulges. I think that would cause him to start looking like Urroner. ;-)

i expect to see grit, previously missing leadership, and turnovers.

I expect to see a re-tooled offense which takes advantage of a mobile, roll- out - play action style passer with mid-range ability. I also expect to see the running game be used to compliment Riley's ability to run (not necessarily option attack) but maybe some zone read like TX and MS did to us in portions of the game. I expect Riley to be a better QB as he will have Doman's attention in Spring/Summer/Fall and not just the middle of the season like last year. More time to prepare, strategize and devise game plans that utilize his skill sets. Good things in store for our offense with him at the helm. IMO he just needs to quit forcing the ball in low percentage type completion scenarios - same issue that Brent Farve had (great plays mixed with stupid, over-zealous confidence which led to interceptions).

I don't think the offense will change much from what we saw the last half of the season. I do expect Riley to improve with finally getting actual attention from the coaching staff and not having to share it with another QB. This can only be a good thing.

But what happens if Lark or Hill outperform RN in sping ball? What can we expect then? :-) just kidding, sort of.

To a certain extent, I'd almost like to see Lark and Hill get lots of live reps during spring ball. Use the spring to develop for 2013. Then use fall to mostly get Nelson ready for the season.

I don't know that Doman has the ability to change the offense all that much. He's still completely unproven as an OC.

I thought he proved a lot last year. He changed quarterbacks who had different styles of play and adjusted the offense to the new QBs strengths. And he did this on the fly with little prep time.

In three weeks, with no bye week, he took a team averaging 16 points, 291 total yards, 68 rushing yards a game with a PER of 99.95 to a team averaging 31 points, 465 total yards, 236 rushing yards a game with a PER of 144.56.

Of course, he still has much to prove, but I think he's more than "unproven." I think he'll be much better next year.

The offense didn't look good in their bowl game at all.
