I'm the President of the Pro-Chambers Fan Club

Is OC a better WR than Collie, Watkins, Reed, or Jacobsen? Probably not. But he's only a sophomore. He came to BYU all the way from Florida, where he literally dreamed of playing football as a Cougar in Provo, and now as an underclassmen, he's already a starter on offense as well as being our #1 punt and kick returner this season. He's got good size, decent hands, decent speed, decent route running, and more heart than the average 5 Cougar gridders. He has an amazing work ethic, and is a great kid off the field.



Anyways, I know he isn't perfect, but HE knows that as well, and that's why he busts his butt so hard every week. Besides, I'm not perfect and neither are you.



Here is what his mother Linette had to say yesterday on "the old board":



"Tsk, tsk, tsk! Now all you boys need to go into timeout for a little while until you can all be friends and play nice! I just wanted to come by and say a few words on my son and families behalf...



1- He is Puerto Rican & Jamaican, so that will make him Carribean and not Black (he unfortunately has been left in the sun just a weee bit, lol ONLY I CAN SAY THAT SO DON"T YOU DARE!)

2- He just turned 19 in June (so I can still speak on his behalf cuz he is my baby)

3- He most definitely could have been playing on the #1 team in the country, but Gainesville is only 2.5 hrs from home and I already saw him everyday for 17 yrs! Whew momma needed a break plus they desperately NEED a WR so I am sure he would have been starting.

4- During Gator Camp his sophmore or junior year he did win Best Hands Award on the jugs machine beating out many of the top recruits in attendance.

5- We all know that everyone WILL always have something nice or bad to say, I can honestly say that it is painful to read some of the things said about him but hey we are all entitled to our own opinions. So I just read and stay informed! But I don't think strangers critisim of him is bad because I will and have always give him a lil call and tell him on a daily basis, " son I know that you are not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but mami (mother in Puerto Rican) needs you to ALWAYS put 200% in everything & all that you do! And know that GOD expects that from you ALL the time, He has and will continue to bless you no matter what this is his plan for you to always be AWESOME! And always thank him every breath that you take because without him you will not achieve greatness!" He then yells at me mom!! Softly says yes mom!



I just hope that he continues to strive to be a better man and have an awesome experience at BYU because that is where GOD wanted him to be, he is the only one that can plan our fate!

Can I just say something about OC?



As a sophomore, OC is starting on one of the nation's most potent offenses. A sophomore.



Furthermore, OC would be getting reps with almost any receiving corps in BYU's history. That doesn't mean he's one of the best yet, it just mean he would be in the top 3 among just about ANY top 3 BYU's ever had.



The problem is that fans thought OC would be BYU's salvation. When do we get athletes with OC's measurables? So we placed on him these absurd expectations, WHICH HE MAY YET FULFILL, but we're unhappy with him because he's only one of BYU's best, and not THE best. To me, that's ridiculous.



Sorry, but OC is critical to this offense, and brings to the table something teams have to account for that no other receiver on the team can bring. He may not be as fast as Todd Watkins, or a perfect a route-runner like AC (hey, NO ONE was as good as he), but he's getting there.



Sign me up for his fan club. We've got 2 more years to cheer.

I look forward to having him for 2 more years. You have to wonder if next year, losing Pitta and George, if the WRs will play a more significant part in the offense. Here's to hoping he turns into a real game-changing playmaker ala Collie and can really create problems for defenses with Jacobsen on the other side!

It blows me away how fast some fans give up on players. Just because he didn't come in as a freshman and lead the team in receptions he is washed up? :? Just because he made some big predictions as a freshman, I read about fans thinking he is arrogant and cocky. I love the kid, I love that he is still here after a tough freshman year where he had a lot of adjusting to do. I love reading his mothers comments (probably why he is still in provo instead of having transferred elsewhere). Oneil is going to be very good and we are lucky to have him.

I hope she does come here. I really like the fire Chambers brings when he's playing. If not for a couple unfortunate fumbles (a problem it seems like he's working hard to correct), we would have had at least one more score against Oklahoma and the FSU game may not have gotten out of hand. I know losing the ball is a big deal but those were both on BIG plays---when he gets better at wrapping the ball up before he goes down he's going to kill opposing defenses with plays just like that.

I like the comments. OC is going to be just fine. He is crucial to our offense in many ways. I REALLY like the comments of OC's mother. What an oustanding woman. We need more moms like Ms. Chambers! The best days for OC are yet ahead and the posters who cannot see that because, like McGregor said, they possess expectations that are out of touch with reality will soon enough be shut up.

I like to think of J.J. DiLuigi. He had a horrible fumbling problem last year, and has been very solid this year (he may still be #1 on the team for rushing yards per attempt). I fully expect Chambers to make the same progression next season.

Seriously, I don't understand why they don't give J.J. the ball more. Unga is awesome, but we need to keep him healthy and J.J. gives an added twist to the offense. Although Kariya hasn't been too bad either.

Something Bronco said awhile ago could probably be related to this... The intensity of the criticism of OC is probably closely related to the lack of football knowledge.

I think Chambers will evolve just fine. I just don't want to see any more dropped punts.



The only observation I have of Chambers is his running gait. Does it not seem a bit flat-footed? I'm sure he's a fast dude, it just looks different.

First, I'm a huge OC supporter. I think that he's going to be one of our biggest weapons in the future and is already a large contributor.



BUT.... I do think that Mrs. Chambers needs to realize that this criticism would happen anywhere. ESPECIALLY if he had the same number of fumbles in Gainesville. Let's not forget that the fans, and coach in that town would have eaten him alive already. BYU fans, while uninformed and ignorant sometimes, are mild compared to schools where football is all that matters.



That said. I always enjoy the inside info we get from LC. OC's got a good mom. I hope she's lurking around these parts making sure we all stay in line.

- OC is good, and definitely starting material



I forget which post said it - and I'm too lazy to look it up - but I agree that it really comes down to fans expecting players like OC to be THE next big thing at BYU, and when they aren't, people tend to be pretty critical.

Sophomore starting on a good BYU team, that's good. I'm excited to see how much he grows and learns over the course of his time at BYU.

I'm in the O'Neil Fan Club. The kid is a sophomore, but he's starting and I don't know who people would prefer at that spot. He has had his issues with holding onto the ball once he catches it, but give him an off-season working on the Tiki-tuck, and that problem is fixed.



I can accept guys who make mistakes trying to win games. Those are the ones you can work with and win.

I'm glad we have him, but I would appreciate the occassional fair catch on punts.

I'd love to see Chambers get targeted more to really see what he can do. But I'm glad Max is spreading the ball around. I guess ya can't have it both ways.
