Who Will Play In The NBA

There is excitement about the young players currently on the roster, on missions, or committed to join the team.

I think they are as good as we usually get - maybe Carlino or someone else will prove to be more NBA worthy than we usually get - more Jimmeresque. But even the NPOY has not yet clearly shown that he will become anything resembling a "Franchise Player".

Who are the future

NBA Franchise Players - like Jabari Parker if we get him. Ainge was in or close to being in this category.

NBA Starters

NBA Role Players - Jimmer is this and has potential to work into a starter role.

Headed to Europe or Asia or done - like Jackson Emery.

Just trying to get a sense whether we are going to continue to be a bubbler, one-and-done, Top 32, Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final Four, Finals, or NC capable team over the next 2-5 years. We should be at least a bubbler and hopefully more than that each year.

Go Cougs

i think we will be a tournament team for the next 3 years and probably longer depending on who else comes in.

Brandon Davies will play in the NBA for a few years, more if he improves, less if he doesn't improve on his rebounding ability

Noah Hartsock could play a dozen years in Europe if he wants to (and he'll be successful)

Matt Carlino is a question mark to me, but he certainly has potential to play in the league.... however he's not close right now, not close at all (neither was Jimmer)

Nate Austin is another guy that could play overseas, but he has zero bounce, no post moves and I doubt he'll ever sniff the NBA... but he's a hard worker that plays fearless, and can run but he doesn't appear to be a good enough athlete to warrant the league..

Charles will play as long as he wants overseas and make a lot of money. One big reason is that he's a citizen of a foreign country and most overseas teams are limited to the amount of Americans they're allowed. The other reason is that he can do everything that they would want in a Euro/foreign two guard.

DaMarcus Harrison... I have no idea on. But he's a true frosh with NBA caliber athleticism so there's a chance. I don't know if his decision making on offense is because he's never had a chance to find himself or because the game is still going way too fast for him.

I am willing to bet that Isaac Neilson will be our best center in ages, but that it might take until his junior year (ala Hartsock) to truly spread his wings. He will play in the NBA, he's got all the skills of Austin, but he also can jump.

Nick Emery due to his size and speed is a question mark at that level, but he's going to be a tremendous college player (i.e. Gerry McNamara)

TJ Haws needs to fill out (for heavens sake he's only a high school soph) but I think because of his height and length, he's got the physical tools. (TJ is a much better ball handler than Tyler)

Tyler Haws is a straight to europe kind of guy. He really doesn't have great handles and he makes up for in effort what he doesn't have in athleticism (he's a good but not great athlete)

Kyle Collinsworth... interesting. He's a solid ball handler, good passer, tough defender, and the game is not too fast for him. He'd have to get himself a jump shot or he won't last long in europe, if he did develop one, he could improve to NBA caliber. Unfortunately, the dude's J is really broken.

Raul Delgado... going to be a very good college player and will struggle to find a position in the NBA as he's even less of a prototype PG than Jimmer, however he's a tremenouds defender and word is that he now has a solid offensive game. Will play in Europe.

6'7" and just a baby; Dalton Nixon is a guy at Orem that could have an NBA future because of his height and shooting ability. He's got a very long time to develop.

I'm sure I'm missing folks, but I'm leaving the office.

I think the only 2 guys on our roster that have a legit shot at the NBA are Davies and Carlino. Davies needs to develop a reliable jump shot to have any chance. Carlino needs to cut down on turnovers and get better at passing and defense in the next 3 years to have a shot. Harrison needs to improve a lot. Like was said, he has the tools but needs to really develop them over the next 3-4 years (depending on if he redshirts any time in the next 3 years) to make it.

I'd add mid-range shooting to that list as well. He also needs to become a bit more consitent and limit turnovers. But he has the build NBA scouts love.

Agree. If he weren't white, I'd say he has a shot at the NBA.

He's a baller and if he keeps on his current trajectory we'll see him in the NBA.

Probably right here. I actually think Austin is fairly athletic. I just don't think he uses it. In a couple of years I'm willing to bet we'll see a different Nate Austin. He plays small for his size, crouching down when trying to post up or defend. He needs to stand tall and use his height. 10 - 20 lbs on his frame would do him wonders. He adds a turn around jumper to his game he'll be unstoppable.

I love Charles, but I'm not so sure about this. Abouo is not consistent enough and his ball handling is poor. If he plays overseas, it will be in a tier 2 league. I hope he proves me wrong.

The talent is there, but mentally he has a ways to go. Needs to be patient, play within himself, not shoot the ball every time he gets it and limit his turnovers. 3 years will do him wonders.

Agree. He reminds me a lot of Lee Cummard.

Have to disagree a bit here. I think Kyle has great vision and is a solid passer. His dribbling; however, is poor. I cringed everytime he put the ball on the floor as it usually resulted in a pick. Agree his shooting needs a lot of work. He's great at rebounding for his size and moving without the ball. Good facilitator, but I just don't see him dominating.

The rest, I haven't seen play.

The problem with Davies is that his game is pure center and he's too small to play center in the NBA, isn't he? I don't watch much NBA, but I can't imagine him trying to bang around in the key with the likes of Dwight Howard. If he can learn to dribble a bit and get a good mid-range jumper, I'd like his chances a lot more.

Davies might possibly make a team, but he wont get drafted. He isn't tall enough, athletic enough, or strong enough. He is moderately skilled but not enough that it makes up for his lack of everything else. He will be a good college player and then europe or the d league for him.

Davies has outstanding inside offensive moves that rival any power forward and can run the floor. He would play very well on a team like NYK and Phoenix Suns. Note: is close to getting triple doubles every time over the last four games and more than held his own vs the Baylor Center.

Davies is a reliable 18 foot jumper away from being an NBA draft pick. He has good atheleticism, he has good post up moves, is a decent passer and defender. But he needs to be a power forward/small forward in the NBA and won't be able to do that with out being able to spot up from 18 feet and nail that jumper consistantly.

Brandon will play in the NBA because #1 He's a very good athlete for his size, He can get up and down the court which is something that gets many bigs cut #2 He can defend the 4 no problem #3 He can always develop his jump shot (Karl Malone didnt' have a J when he came into the league.. not that Brandon will develop like that) #4 4's and 5's dont' grow on trees. Like I said above, I expect that he'll play in the NBA at least three years. If Brian Scalabrine can carve out a 10 year NBA career, then Brandon can at least get 3-4.

Davies would be a good low post scorer to bring off the bench. He can run with 2nd units and provide good minutes to a team. He's a pretty decent rebounder and defender (taking charges, etc.) He could make a roster.

Our the current BYU players on Davies has played his way into serious try-outs with NBA teams. If Davies senior season shows increased strength and rebounding he probably will be a 2nd round pick. If he can add a consistent mid-range jumper to go with improved rebounding he might work his way into a late first.

Davies lacks the explosive leaping ability that NBA scouts look for. He does have good length and size for the 4 especially if he gets stronger.

Hartsock physically is two levels below as Davies as a NBA prospect. He is smaller and his body is fully developed. At 230 he is likely to get pushed around by NBA 4's. Hartsock does have a very good jumper, but I expect he would struggle finishing at the rim. He might be able to get a draft workout.

I disagree with Craig about Nate Austin. Nate has the making of a NBA role playing big if he can get much stronger. He needs to be 265 instead of 230. He has enough length and quickness to be a passable NBA defender/rebounder. He appears to be on his way to having very good range for a big man. His on court energy level/motor is also a huge asset. But he has a very long way to go.

Harrison needs improve all basketball skills to have a shot.
