QB Cooper Bateman

He sure is garnering lots of attention & offers. Does anyone know if BYU has any chance landing him? And - do we really want to? His numbers look very good: 6' 3", 205, 40 - 4.37.



Any scoop on this QB?

I do not think that he is LDS, and I think he grew up a Ute fan, so I think our chances are pretty slim. I get the feeling he will go out of state or Utah.

Darn straight those times are quick. According to Jerry Rice, Steve Young ran 40 yds , in pads, in 4.35. So, Cooper Bateman, speed wise, is hangin' with elite company.

I have a hard time believe that Steve young or this kid ran sub 4.4 times in the 40. If Steve young ran a 4.35 in pads, he would have been the fastest man on the team and maybe the fastest guy in the NFL. I would be surprised if anyone in the NFL today could run a 4.35 with pads on. The fastest guys in the NFL today run 4.4's in gym shorts.

There is no way this kid runs a 4.35, that is world class speed. Most of these kids are timed in high school on a stop watch and a stop watch is +/- .3 seconds of the actual time. If he runs this laser timed then it is legit, but I can promise you it is not a legit time.



Every in High School and when I played college ball there were guys that claimed to run a 4.3 or 4.4 but that was on stop watch and every time they got on a laser they never ran it under 4.6. Which is still fast but there is a lot of difference in a 4.3 and 4.6

That is literally the fastest time I have ever heard. I wonder if he has ever been timed that fast before or since.

A 4.35 40 would have ranked:



4th fastest at the NFL combine in 2011.

Tied for 6th in 2010.

Tied for 9th in 2009.

Tied for 15th in 2008.

Top 15 in 2007 all ran 4.34 or faster.

Top 15 in 2006 all ran 4.34 or faster.

Best time I found was in 1999 -

Rondel Melendez, WR, Atlanta Falcons, Drafted #247 overall. 40 yd: 4.24 sec.



They say Chris Johnson, RB for Titans also ran a 4.24.

As to 40 times, the issue ans disparity is usually there because some times are by hand, others by machine. Times by hand are always faster than machine times. And usually by at least .1 or more.



Point being, 4.4 or better speed is very rare with a machine timer.

Yes it is. But it is done by NFL speedsters all the time. I emphasize - speedsters.

I daresay Deion Sanders was the fastest to play the game in recent memory. I think he easily ate up 4.2.

From what I counted, Cooper has 15 D1 scholarship offers. Including some pretty impressive schools: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Arkansas, Arizona, Arizona St, Boise St., Utah and BYU.



It would nice to land such a talented "in-state" talent. I think it's a long shot at best. The list of impressive D1 just keeps growing. It's heady stuff for a kid in high school.
