While we may joke about it, there would be absolutely 0% chance that anyone would do it. The "kennel club" is run by the university now and is not just a collection of rowdy students like it once was, and thus the university will not tolerate anything that could even be remotely perceived as a slight against a protected group (religion/race/sexual orientation).



Don't get it twisted though, the place will be loud. With SMC going down last night, GU controls its own destiny again.

Made me laugh. I've actually never been bothered by SDSU dressing up as missionaries. I had A LOT of problems with the Puke fans that would dress up in drag saying they were portraying BYU co-eds.



At the SMC/GU game last week I saw on TV 4 nuns sitting in the end court and my first reaction, from those MWC years, was that GU was making fun of SMC and then I remembered that they're both Catholic and so they wouldn't be dressing up as nuns, but they were the real deal.

Was there really ever anyone that was offended by the dressing up as missionaries thing? It's not like a white shirt, tie and bicycle helmet are sacred. I say encourage them to dress up, it just makes them look goofy and uncomfortable. And if we win, think how stupid they must feel walking back to their dorm.

It's worse to take offense than to offend.



That said, I admit the students as missionaries did bother me a bit. Mostly because of what it later led to - chants, signs, etc. Students will keep pushing the envelope too see how much they can get away with.

A push to the BIG XII. Delusional. The XII has never offered BYU membership, and if they ever do, no push will be needed.

I'm not so sure. I think the BOD really likes having our non football sports in the wcc and having a relationship with the wcc schools. I bet there is more to it than just being in the best conference. Guess we just have to wait and see

I like how a 10-word aside about conference realignment is already derailing this thread.



I'm excited about BYU playing in Spokane. They apparently went 120-9 from 99-09 at home. Should be a rough environment.



Bike helmets and ties don't bother me as much as they used to. Between the Davies Honor Code stuff, the musical and all the recent op-eds in Romney's wake, I feel I've gotten better at distinguishing between legitimate vitriol aimed at LDS people, negative-but-respectful critiques of the church and harmless, lunkheaded jabs made by people who haven't heard them 300 times already and don't mean any real harm. Dressing up as a missionary falls under the latter, IMO. Not classy, but not vicious either. Not worth getting angry over.

If dressing up as missionaries is inflammatory, you're being way to sensitive.



Hate to be a wet blanket, but I think the odds are against BYU vs Gonzaga. BUT... I expect a win all the same.

They (Zag fans on that board) think the missionary thing really bugged us last year. Not true. It was the Davies signs and chants.

Are GU fans really that uncreative? Must be because they go to a repressive religious school. ;)

When you put 50,000 guys in white shirts, ties, black dress shoes, helmets, and clean cut on bicycles around the world in pairs - you make yourself an easy target.



I actually think the missionary attire thing is entertaining - if that is all that is done.

I actually think the missionary garb is really funny and it doesn't bother me at all. It's good clean fun. The "Jimmer, which one of your wive's gave you mono" sign at SDSU made me bust up laughing although the more comments I read about Mitt Romney and how ignorant peoople are about the church makes me rethink that one being funny. Maybe people think it was a legitimate question? :sick:



Some of it's just fun and some of it's over the line. (Did anyone catch the SDSU fans last year chanting "you'll get fired" to Jim Boylen. That's a low blow.)



The :utard: that dresses up like Jesus is pretty over the line. I can't imagine what happens if Joseph Smith (the :utard: corner back) ever becomes a starter.

Perhaps my years of growing up as one of the only Mormons around has worn on me as I tire of all the "cleverness" and "lightheartedness" at my expense; however, if a Jewish basketball team showed up to a game and the student section put on big noses, wore yamakas, dressed up as Rabbis or held signs with slurs and jokes about Jews, something tells me that wouldn't go over so well. Why should we tolerate anything different?

Dressing up as 26,000 priests and nuns would be funny. Slurs and jokes about Priests and young boys or the inquisition would be in really bad taste.



But keeping some of the crowd from crossing the line is impossible because some people have poor judgment and some people are mean and hateful.

In fact it makes me laugh, because when I go to a game there is only one thing I am dressing up as. No matter the opponent, I will be decked out in Cougar gear. It is far more important to me that I cheer my school than jeer at the opponents school.



I would be disappointed in Zag fans dressed like missionaries, not because it would be offensive, but because I respect the Zag fan base, and a real fan base cheers more for their school than they cheer against another school.



That is what go so old in the MWC. It seem like the other schools took more pleasure out of rooting against BYU than they did in cheering their own school.



WCC fans...I expect more out of you.

Let's send the entire Spokane Mission to the game...all in ties and white shirts...on their bikes.

Then we'll have our own missionary cheering section.

How'd that work for SDSU? Oh yeah they lost.....





I have a feeling that the refs are going to have a lot more impact on the game than the crowd.
