Finally - MWC and C-USA Finally Dead

Bad TV contracts and bottom of the totem pole status finally killed them. WAC funeral will actually come first as MWC and C-USA keep status quo for one year before forming a completely new conference - yet to be named. My iPad cannot post the link. See CBS Sports College Football headlines. It is now offivial. Not a merger. Two disbandings and a new league.

The new league will have all of the MWC and C-USA survivors. All.

It will likely expand. Likely to demolish what little is left of WAC by picking it's bones. Maybe USU finally gets a break. Maybe there will be no WAC teams on our 2013 schedule. Maybe there will be no WAC - or it will go the way of Big West or Big Sky by dropping football or dropping a division. Hey - maybe WAC remnants will see playoffs long before BCS Subdivision does. Bright side to everything.

Temple may be in. Maybe Fla Intl and Fla Atl. Maybe Army. Maybe USU and a few other WHACKY teams. Big Country will be Big and will have a semi-conference championship game and a conference championship game. Can you smell Quadrants? Was the old WAC just a little before it's time.

I actually like this desperation move - although the SEC will poach ACC and Big 12 at will and PAC will poach Big 12 if it wants to and Big 10 will poach ACC and Big 12. But stuff runs downhill, so ACC and Big 12 will poach BEASTWEST who will poach Big Country who will be the ultimate farm system Triple A level and poach whatever else surfaces from the even littler guys as needed.

The continuing tragedy of college football.

Possibly gone is the BYU/Utah rivalry.

Gone are the Kansas/MO, Texas/Texas A&M, Nebraska/Oklahoma, WVU/Pitt, etc. rivalries. Probably more to come. Conferences try to create new rivalries after abandoning ones that have been on the books for 100 years or more. Just sickening.

Totally agree which is why I like this desperate move. I think there will be quadrants of 6-8 teams and rivalries will mostly be preserved within those quadrants.

Just shows how important BYU is. The only reason the mwc existed was to showcase BYU. Now its gone so is the mwc. Make no mistake the mwc and cusa. Will not survive together. It is virtually identical to the wac16 with fewer marquee teams. It is a losing proposition.

Broadcasting has changed since then. Everybody is getting more money. They will get a better TV deal than either MWC or C-USA had. That is why they are starting a new conference instead of merging. Both are shedding bad TV contracts. Don't get me wrong - BEAST will have a better contract. Big 10 and 12 and PAC and ACC and SEC will all have much, much better contracts.

These guys need to work out regional match-ups to the extent possible to cut down on logistical costs and burdens.

The BCS has ruined college football - no doubt. This is a casualty. Yes BYU was the BIg Dog back in the day. In the end, Utah and TCU, and BSU became bigger dogs - but MWC could not hold them either. Couldn't even hold SDSU and barely held AFA in the end. And it ain't over. They will lose some more.

But, if they do it right, they can stage very competitive games that are fun for their fans to watch - all ten of their fans. But that could grow if there is no big dog and lots of parity.

That stupid rotating of quadrants in the WAC was a mess. Sixteen teams is not enough to do this right given the spread. If they can create divisions with at least 6 schools nearby - it can work.

But they may be taking bus rides instead of charter flights and staying in cheap hotels.

If they fail to create some excitement in their own fanbase, it will die. But it has a chance and MWC, WAC, and C-USA are all dead if they do not do something.

You can bet the WAC is trying to undo this by inviting the western folks to join them.

Someone has to die.

MWC and C-USA have lost 8 teams to BEASTWEST or Big XII or PAC 12, or Independence and it ain't over yet. The replacing of those 8 teams has come out of the heart of WAC, mostly, so far, and that ain't over either.

Sorry Bib2; I disagree with you. That most likely means that you're wrong.

Amazing that the MWC could basically only survive two seasons without BYU and essentially began its death throes in the first year without the Cougars.

Do you actually believe that if BYU had stayed, Utah, TCU, BSU, and SDSU would have all turned down offers. Really. Incredulous. Utah left first and the dominoes started to fall. The horrible MTN and other TV arrangements, with no relief in sight were like pouring accelerant on a fire.

No Utah and TCU had already left, before BYU did. If BYU would have stayed, the BEAST might not have had the power to teams from the MWC. There is a reason that the conference seemed indifferent when Utah left, but cried bloddy murder when BYU left. They know they were in trouble.

BYU left before TCU actually. But they would all be leaving for the same reason BYU left. MTN. The same reason even the remnants are leaving now. MTN. There is and was and would be very little money from MTN, and there was about a decade left on that contract.

Everyone wants out from under it - like we did. Now they found a way to escape and they will all get more money. Not as much more as Utah, BYU, TCU, SDSU, and BSU got. But more. Much more.

I'm a big BYU fan BUT to say the MWC failed because of only BYU. Is a true homer.

All these schools left within one calender year. There's no way to prove it, and its a total homer-comment. I think we need to pound our chests a little harder.

The best schools of the conference left AND that left nothing for the MWC to survive on.

I do like the logic, because it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

The MWC would still be a league today (and in 2 years) if BYU had stayed put. I guarantee it. Trust me, I'm the owner of the most popular CougarCorner* on the interwebs.

If BYU doesn't leave, TCU doesn't leave, Boise doesn't leave and SDSU doesn't leave. If BYU doesn't leave the MWC is a better conference than the Big East which would have more than likely lost its AQ status.

BYU was the glue that held the MWC together. Actually, you could make the argument that it was Utah that was the glue as BYU wouldn't have left if Utah had stayed put.

Here is the flaw. You are getting hung up on who plays the best football. It is all about who pays the most money. MWC was held hostage - very long term - with pathetic money.

TCU may or may not have turned down Big East and BCS Bowl access - no way they turn down Big 12 for MWC. Paradigm shift in money, prestige, and access.

Now if BYU and the rest of the MWC disbanded and formed a new league and rounded up enough new teams to have a championship game - still a long shot - but maybe. Because that would have killed MTN. Even then, no way TCU turns down Big 12 or Utah turns down PAC.

MWC minus Utah and TCU - damaged goods. Even a new conference that ditches the MTN but loses Utah and TCU - dicey at best.

Look around the landscape and try to find a successful conference with 8 or 9 teams. Even Big 12 has pressure to get back to 12. BEASTWEST went 12. ACC 14. SEC 14. PAC went 12. Big 10 or 11 even went 12. Dinosaurs become extinct - BYU made its move to avoid extinction as did Utah, TCU, BSU, SDSU. BSU and TCU moved twice in a year or two to avoid extinction. About 4 C-USA teams moved to avoid extinction as did several BEAST teams and even some BIG XII teams.

The landscape is changing. Much of it not good. BYU is not in the driver's seat.

The world does not revolve around BYU football - that should have become pretty clear by now.

In my opinion, TCU would have bolted for the Big XII regardless. The more likely scenario is that if BYU had remained in the MWC, BYU would have been more willing to talk to the Big East about moving over with Boise State. The Big East would have made the same moves (except BYU likely would have joined Boise instead of SDSU) and the MWC and C-USA would still merge (or create a "new association").

Also, if BYU had remained in the MWC, the hundreds of thousands of BYU alumni and fans outside of Utah would not know what it is like to see every BYU football game on TV (amazing!) and the athletic budget would remain constrained to the pre-2011 level.

Course they were in trouble. We brought in all the money. And when BYU finally woke up and said, "Why not keep the money we earn," the MWC went all Occupy Wall Street on us.

What all this shows me is that I wish the MWC could have really pulled a coup two summers ago. If when Texas and Oklahoma were thinking of bolting the MWC could have made a serious power play.

If they had tried to swoop in and grab Missouri and Kansas and Kansas State they could have 1) helped contribute to the downfall of the Big 12 (and possibly step into their vacated spot) and 2) stabilized their own conference.

Instead they sat back and waited to see how the dust settled before acting. And then watched Utah, BYU, TCU, Boise and SDSU all leave.

The ONLY proactive thing they did was try to sabotage BYU's departure. Everyone else was congratulated on a great move up - except BYU. If BYU wasn't the most important team in the conference, they wouldn't have gotten such a drastic and vitriolic response to them leaving.

They could not have pulled that off due to tv. They should have grabbed BSU several years ago. They just did not have the tv partners to make things work. Too much competition from the big leagues.

TV was the reason as Scott indicates. It is not that TV would not be interested though - it was that the MTN contract had about a decade left on it. But if they disbanded the MWC instead of clinging to the hope that BCS AQ was right around the corner - then maybe a power play to form a new conference could have worked - at least for a few months until SEC, ACC, and PAC, and Big 10 got greedy.
