BYU vs Pepperdine

We hit a lot of 3's early and then fell in love with the outside shot and missed quite a few. Cusick still sucks on defense and the guards are blowing right by him and he passed up like 3 wide open 3's. If he's not going to shoot open shots then leave him on the bench. Carlino was taking some dumb shots from the outside which probably upset Rose.

I wish Charles were more consistent with bringing his MAN game.

Charles finally got going. We really need him to play at this level. Once again I think not having Zylstra on the floor today was a blessing in disguise

Does this qualify as a route? BYU 86, Pepperdine 48. I think so.

In addition to the monster night from the floor and on the boards, Charles did not have a foul tonight. Usually when he doesn't have a single foul after five minutes, it's because he has multiple fouls.

Exactly. I think Carlino is every bit as good as Jimmer was his freshman year, but the comparison is difficult because Jimmer didn't get the playing time that Matt does. His upside is great.



Fun to get that gorilla off of our backs tonight. I hope he found a new home.

Better yet, when are fans going to realize that he's not Jimmer?



He's more Steve Nash-like than anyone else, if you ask me.

Great win. We finally looked like BYU. A few thoughts:



1 - Charles Abouo needs to play this way every night.



2 - We're better without Zylstra. Winder and Harrison bring speed and defense to the floor. I liked Winder taking it to the hole.



3 - IMO Carlino will be a better PG than Jimmer. Jimmer is more of SG trapped in a PG body. I love Carlino's vision and how he pushes the ball up the court.

Interesting stat - both Davies and Abouo did not have any fouls in the game. They were able to develop a rythmn and not have it interrrupted by having to come out due to silly fouls or foul trouble. Harstock was also able to concentrate on defense without having to carry the load on offense. Everyone seemed more focused, and everyone that played (10) players scored at least 3 points. Hopefully, we are jelling and starting to reach the potential that Coach Rose has expected.

Seriously, doggin on a guy who rarely see's extended minutes. He played good defense and this is probably the first time this entire season that he's had the opportunity to take more than 4 shots in a game. He should have been playing more from the beginning

Yeah, I know. I said moments, not hours. a player who has sat most of the season isn't likely to come in and shoot 80%, and he did take an ill advised shot or two. If he keeps playing, he'll keep improving. He is showing that he has some talent, not that he is ready to carry the team.

Yeah - I would not have complained about 80% or 70% or 60% or 50% or even 40% but somewhere around 20-30% it comes up. Harrison shot exactly 20%, had 3 fouls, did get 2 steals, 2 rebounds, but zero assists and had 1 turnover. He and Carlino are why our 3 point % was not phenominal Saturday.



Anyone want to post the actual % to add a touch of objectivity to the discussion.



But yeah - lets bag on Cusick, Zylstra, etc., and just give Harrison a pass because he is a freshman and athletic. Now if he played like he did vs Va Tech - I would be singing his praises here. Seems to me like Carlino is getting a pass too, on this game.



Maybe we should start all of these threads with the player stats in black and white before we all start gong off on the slow white guys and giving passes to the new guys off the bench.

I think WInder has earned his starts. I am glad he is starting. I do not think he would have played as well in December or even January as he is playing now. It is called bringing them along and developing them. Harrison is coming along too. Still way inconsistent. Cusick and Zylstra are inconsistent as well.



But, I agree, Zylstra absolutely stunk in this game. Wait - he didn't actually play - due to injury - let's bag on him - probably the same baggers that said Zylstra and Cusick can only play against crappy teams, but suddenly want to say the guys who played well against this crappy team should have been starting all year. And then give the two guys who were a little shaky vs this crappy team - Harrison and Carlino - a pass - even though Pepperdine is in the worst 25% of our opponents this season - easily.

Bib you are focused too much on the hear and now. The point was that Harrison made some positive plays and found a few things he can do effectively to contribute to the team. He had some ill-advised shots, but making mistakes in a blow out win is exactly the right situtation for him to try things.



We are going to need him if not this year then the next.

I agree that he should be getting PT and that they should be developing him. I fully expect him to have a bright FUTURE and hope the back end of the schedule affords him plenty of minutes.

I'll take great defense over terrible defense any day of the year. I don't care how many shots you are missing.



Playing great defense, getting steals, and running the floor is BYU basketball. Anything else is just pretending.
