More injuries - Zylstra ankle

So now we have CC out, Rogers out, and Zylstra questionable for Saturday. This is rough because our 2 outside shooters are now likely sidelined and we really need to start rolling again with our outside shot. Our guards need to really start stepping up from the outside. Cusick is really our only reliable option out there right now but he still can't shoot over anybody. Maybe we need Cusick to be more assertive from the outside to help get us going?? With Abouo's foul prone/out of control play we may need Harrison to step up to a bigger role. Rogers just had an MRI on his knee that revealed a bruise and is likely out at least 2 more weeks. With Zylstra out this probably also means more Cusick and Carlino at the 1 and 2. Our version of Stockton and Pangos. We just need a 3 now that can make up for it on the defensive end and hopefully Charles and Harrison can provide that because Zylstra never could. Maybe a blessing in disguise if Harrison can take advantage of any extra playing time.

I'm actually not that all bent up about Zylstra potentially missing the game.

Winder has been playing quite well lately. Harrison can come in and provide some min at the 3 if needs be to spell Abouo a bit. Rose has been playing Cusick and Carlino at the same time lately, so I think we should be okay between Winder, Harrison, Cusick and Carlino.

I actually feel the same way about Zylstra. The only thing he's been doing good at lately is rebounding

I hate being down on any BYU player, but I just don't see the value of Zylstra being on the court unless he's hitting open 3's (which no one has recently). I'm sorry, but don't think I'll miss him, or even notice he's out this game

I think Zylstra is an asset. Not very dynamic most of the time, but I don't worry as much when he is on the floor as some players.

I finally found a place where I am not bothered with Cusik on the floor when he playes with Carlino as the 2 guard.

Interesting that our luck in football this year was that injuries were often recovered from earlier than the projection. BB injuries have been plagues that are finding a home and staying for awhile.

Cusick and Carlino on the court at the same time provided dividends. Cusick will always try and feed the big men and then shoot if open when the ball if kicked out to me. Tends to be a stabilizing force and runs Rose's game plan. Carlino benefits from this calming influence and lets the game flow more readily to him - drives to basket, peppered by outside shots. Winder brings defense (steals) and Harrison (instant offense) in short spurts. I actually like the opportunities to tweak this line-up until Brock recovers. Note: he has been playing on a hurt ankle for some time which has limited his mobility (he just hasn't been vocal about the injury).

I would like to see our 3 shooters fake the shot more and then drive. Especially when they are not hitting them.

Dave Rose provides some insight on two guards playing at the same time (kind of mirrors what I said previously):

On the benefits of having two point guards on the court at once:

"I would love to have three point guards out there at the same time. If we can get guys that can handle it, can pass it, can shoot it, can make plays in transition . Usually, it is size that causes you some issues. But when we are playing Craig and Matt at the same time, our ability to enter the ball to our post guys improves, because they are both really good post-entry passers. Our ability to spread the floor a little bit and give them more space inside has really helped us."

His philosophy is also supported by the fact that our recent recruits have primarily been PG/SG (Delgado, Chapman, Haws, Emery, Calvert, etc.)

Against Pepperdine we shouldn't need Zylstra. He does bring some toughness on the boards that we desperately need at times.

Harrison needs all the time he can get.

Yes. I get the impression all Harrison really needs is PT and he'll start rolling.

The weird thing is that Harrison will play well in the first half of a game and then Rose will barely even play him in the second half. Not sure if Rose doesn't trust him late in the game or what?? I'd like to see Abouo and Harrison man the 3 by themselves tomorrow. Harrison is our only highlight reel player and it would be nice to see some above the rim play every now and then. When was the last time we completed a true alley-oop dunk?? Harrison has the ability to really do something spectacular if Rose would let him
