Hoffman a 2012 break-out candidate

If anyone is an ESPN insider (I'm not), it looks like ESPN has got Hoffman on their radar for next season.

Don't know what they had to say. This much is obvious - as roommates they developed a special chemistry that showed on the field - could anticipate what the other one would do - see Tulsa last second TD. Hoffman's stats really took off when Riley became starter (he became the go to guy in the clutch - bailed him out lots of times). Their confidence in each other grew as the season progressed. Imagine what a full season will be like if they remain healthy for the entire season.

Having great speed and great hands doesn't hurt, either.

Says he is the number two guy out of all the players last year who weren't first or second team all conference and didn't make it to 1000 yards. Other guys on the list are jaz Reynolds, Malcom Mitchell, Keenan Davis, And Austin seferian-Jenkins.

Hoffman may have been the most impressive player of this group in 2011, not only because of his quality metrics across the board but also because of his prowess in running the route tree. Hoffman was thrown a pass on each of the 10 basic route types and also had targets on curls, fades and option routes against zone defenses. Catching three touchdown passes in a bowl win against Tulsa also showed his big-game potential.



Hoffman's upside becomes clearer when noting that the Cougars had the most favorable schedule of any of these five teams and should get even better play out of quarterback Riley Nelson, who had to fight through a collapsed lung and rib injury late in the 2011 season.

How is a player who had 61 catches for 943 yards and 10 TD not considered to have already broken out?



He was top 50 in receiving yards, top 70 in receptions and top 26 in touchdowns.

So you have to be an elite WR to be considered a breakout star?

If you're going to be a star on a national level, yes. You need to be top-10 in at least a couple of the major statistics for your position.



I take break-out star as someone who is in the conversation of being a biletnikoff award finalist

I take it as a player that might get tempted to go NFL a year early - heaven forbid.

I interpret it as someone who has played well and received some media attention but now has every team focusing on them because of past performance. Cody H. is no longer a best kept secret and will receive a lot more attention than in the past. If we have alternate players that can contribute and step up, then Hoffman will be very difficult to defend 1 on 1. See SC's tandem of Robert Woods and Marquis Lee - very difficult to stop either one of them and they put up good numbers - expecting even greater things from them this year.

Exactly. IMHO, last year was Hoffman's breakout year. This year, he establishes himself as a superstar. Which he reserves. Exciting to watch. Tremendous athlete.
