Fall 2012 Two-Deep: Who will contribute?

We have returning starters, returning players who played at their position, but did not start, special teams guys, redshirts, transfers, RMs, and new recruits. Some players will play at multiple positions or switch positions. Who will fill the depth Chart?

It is easy to spot where the one deep is certain and where there are a lot of questions to resolve between now and fall. Two deep is fuzzier, as would be expected.

I'm fairly certain Hill will RS and Nelson will be backed up by Lark and Munns.

Both trenches seem to lack depth with experience. 1-deep should be comparable to 2011 - but 2-deep scares me. Linebacker was over-loaded in 2011 - we should be OK in 1-deep. A little off in 2-deep, it seems. DB should be similar or better compared to 2011. TE is still a crap shoot - but they all have more experience and maybe more of them will stay healthy. WR should be as good as or probably even better than 2011. QB should be better than 2011 unless Nelson goes down early. We better get some PT for whomever we think has a shot for 2013. 2013 is scary. RB - and I expect this will be a minority view - may be a little off from 2011 even though 2011 was not extraordinary. We will miss JJ and Kariya's experience. Juice is a question mark. Alisa really was not in long enough to fully evaluate. Falslev is money - but small and could get injured. Hine has a ton of hype. I have never seen him play. I hope he is all that we hope. But that Potential thing? Same for Pritchard at fullback. But fullback should be better than 2011 overall.



This team will be better than the team that played the first 4 3/4 weeks of 2011. It will be about the same as the one that finished the season last year. The schedule will be tougher next season. BYU will be fortunate to win 10 games again.



Of course, I will try to get more optimistic as we hear about Spring Practice, Informal Player Workouts, and Fall Camp and watch the injury reports. We absorbed some big injuries(Pritchard, JP, 4 Tight Ends, etc.) and somehow survived last season. IDK if we have the depth to do that this year.

I would fully expect Lark as back-up. Then it gets interesting. If BM and BD believe Munns has what it takes to lead this team in 2013, we should see him in mop up duty whenever we are fortunate enough to blow someone out early and let Lark play and then get Munns in. If Munns is not perceived to be th elikley guy for 2013, we may see them get someone else ready. But, even then, tough to waste a red-shirt season on a 3rd string role. The 3rd string guy would likely not get enough reps to warrant giving that up. Unless Nelson gets injured early - then I would expect the back-up to Lark to be they guy expected to start in 2013. Either way - those games vs weak WACKY oponents late in the season should get some valuable PT for Munns (or HIll) if he is going to be the guy.

I hope RN does not play all of the time. I would not mind seeing Olson in their to at least have some experience going into 2013. Then we can do the two QB system. OH SCRATCH THAT IDEA.

Bills redshirt, missed spring ball

Sorenson played here as a Freshman and possibility he gains a few lbs with the offseason and turns into a David Nixon type player, slightly undersized but can run. I put him at both postions.

I suspect lark will be getting some serious reps comes spring. munns will have to show a very clear separation to supplant lark, even if coaches are leaning towards him being starter in 2013. my way too early guess is that hill ends up our starting qb in 13.

With Munns being so large and supposidly very athletic for his size, I am interested to look at the possibility of him switching positions. 6'5" 250, good size for a DE, I don't know how tough he is, but I would expect a position change with him this coming year. 2012 would be his only shot at starting but I can't see the coaches going with a one year starter.



Hill is an intriguing kid, if he's this atheltic do we see a possible switch to a receiver? I hope not, just throwing it out there.

I got a chance to talk to one of the defensive starters on the team last Sunday. He was one who said even during fall camp last year that he didn't think Jake Heaps would last the year at quarterback which surprised me at the time (not so much from what we've heard now). But he says he thinks Riley will keep the starting job this fall because of his experience and leadership but that Hill is probably already the better quarterback and is pushing for starting time. He does expect Hill to redshirt this year but says he's going to be great when he does start in 2013.

What does he say about Lark and Munns?

Several things have been noted about Hill since he enrolled in school and began working out with the team. He is very fast, has a great arm, and has great leadership skills - confidence. IMO he will be getting groomed early this year (may split time with senior Lark) as he is clearly our 2013 QB. Need to give him so game-like situations to check his progress and decision-making response/reaction.

Given that Coach Kafusi likes to alternate his line frequently during a game to keep bodies fresh, I believe that we will have the following players on DL:



Outside DL (R): Manumaleuna, Jordan Richardson, Theodore King

NG: Romney Fuga, Marques Johnson, Tui Critchton

Outside DL (L): Russell Tialavea, Ian Dulan, Mike Muehlman

I agree with this. Munns likely won't take the starting gig in 2013 with Hill coming on board. I'd let Olsen get some reps next year and possibly at the expense of Lark. That way we'd have a guy with experience to compete with Hill and Munns in 2013. Backing Riley with Lark next season doesn't make a lot of sense being that both are Seniors. Let Lark play when Riley gets hurt but that's about it

I'm still not convinced Munns won't be a factor in the 2013 race. I really think we could see a different Munns in the spring and fall. Munns has never had a path to the field and never had a reason to take football seriously, for all intents and purposes.



I think we'll see a very good competition next spring. But I think we'll see Hill beat him out, though.
