It has to hurt recruiting if players doubt that bronco and crew can deliver a big season. And unfortunately so far there isn't much evidence so far that would support that they can. Winning 10 games is great, but going 10-0 is a whole different thing.

Once a team is out of NC and BCS contention no one talks about them. Even if they win 11 games after it no longer matters.

The level of discussion drops when out of NC contention, drops further when out of BCS Bowl contention, but still gets way more discussion at 11-2 or 12-1 than at 10-3 or -worse yet - 8-5 or whatever it was that Utah got this year.



Ask BSU and TCU who both got some discussion this year. Ask real BYU fans who remember the buzz in our 11-2 seasons.

It was crickets for TCU this year (at least on the east coast) and Boise got lots of coverage. Which is the point I'm trying to make.

Same point I was trying to make. BSU was still in the conversation even after they lost to TCU. TCU got back in the conversation with that win. Not the NC conversation.

The fact that we just got two more speedy walkons from Alta and Timpview (WRs) tells me there are a lot players wiling to walk-on with promise of schollie because they believe in the state of the program and the exposure it is getting. Again, we are getting better quality players as a result of this season and I attribute a good portion of this to BYU's high visibility with the ESPN TV contract and the enthusiasm projected by the coaches.

Bronco is quoted saying "Well probably move a bit slower than we have in past years, said coach Bronco Mendenhall. Were getting more specific with higher standards than what weve chose to embrace during the past seven years. So you'll probably see it slow (down) to some extent. How much I cant say, but if you do see a change then it will be to slow the process down from what youve seen."



Wonder how many recruits they had an opportunity to sign that they couldn't offer because of schollies already committed and what the higher standards will entail. My gut feeling is the GPA and ACT scores will now increase.

I hope it is more stars. As in greater ability.

I hope your gut is wrong. I understand avoiding guys that won't be able to meet NCAA standards. But why self impose ACT and grade minimums? So you can say we are smarter than the team that just beat us?

Incongruent as I read it.



"Players who are still available late in the process with multiple offers from good programs usually do not choose BYU". True from my observation and was stated in the news article.



"players we wanted were available this year and we had a couple of schollies free up and we didn't get those guys and had to go to 2nd choice guys" my 2011 observation and opinion that supports above news quote.



So let's save some schollies so we can take advantage of late opportunities.



Incongruous



Possibly due to the we can't really say the real reason factor.



Real Reason IMHO - some of the guys signed based on soph and junior results did not progress as seniors and would not have been offered if we had waited.



So if that is it - and they can 't exactly come out and say they signed a few guts early that they wish they had not signed - even compared to the 2nd choice late guys we did and could sign.



I get it and agree with the tightening of early offer criteria to sign sure fire studs early but not gamble on others early.

We have a 5A DB from TX that is tripping to BYU - Traquille Flowers. He is a good student, good kid and quite talented (i.e. has speed).



As BYU continues to play on ESPN every week, these type of kids will take a closer look at the university and I believe we will start landing more of these recruits. The more BYU can gain exposure on the national stage, the more we will see these type of kids go to BYU. Clearly the Y will be attractive to kids that meet the academic and character qualities of BYU. The key will be to identify them early in the recruiting process so we can jump on them ASAP. This is probably what Bronco and Dupaix were alluding to when they stated that there would be recruiting changes in the coming years.
