Another ho hum 26 win season - biggest comeback ever

Apparently about as exciting to the average fan as the men's football getting another ho hum 10 win season and partial Top 25 ranking tainted by USC probation in eligibility in one poll.

This reminds me a bit of when BYU was about 10-0 and highly ranked last year and it was still a ghost town on BB chat boards because fans were busy lobbying for most of the football coaches to get fired.

But - hey - if we get to 20 wins today does that mean the basketball team is TWICE as good as that boring 10 win football team? Just askin.

And for those that lose interest any time we are not ranked number 1 - scratch Men's volleyball - due to a broken hand injury, they got beat in Provo by lowly 7th ranked Stanford. And Women's basketball seemingly can not crack the Top 20 despite continuing to win.

Making matters worse - the U still has that Women's Gymnastics Team, highly touted FB recruiting class, and child prodigy BJ to crow about.

The basketball forum is usually a lot more dead than the football forum, even in the middle of the season when the team is doing well. Of course there are also some people who don't consider anything less than a final four appearance a good season, but it's a good thing when they aren't posting that much---not because it means anything is going on, but because their opinions are stupid.

24 or 25 wins is the new 20 win threshold.

Is there a topic here? Not sure I understand the intent of this thread, but i'll give it a try. As for me, I'm excited about this season. We will get 24-25 wins with a lot of youth. This is really a rebuilding year and yet we are doing pretty well. February is typically a very good month for BYU BBall and I think this will be no exception. The team shows signs of putting things together and if they can continue to build on that each week we will make the tournament and even have a shot at a win or two. We have potential, just got to get it to maturation.

Yeah, I'm confused here. 20 win seasons ARE ho-hum. 20 wins is not even close to a decent season unless you're in the Big East or the ACC or something. 20 wins in the WCC is equivalent to 7 football wins in my mind. It means 12 losses and no Tourney.

Unless we're talking major injury problems or an outstandingly difficult schedule, I expect 10 wins from Mendenhall and 25 wins from Rose. They're good coaches, and I expect them to do good things.

Football is more popular than basketball. Film at 11.

10 wins in a 13 game season in football is a 77% winning pct.

24 wins in a 32 a game season in basketball is a 77% winning pct.

The point though, is whether 10/football 20/basketball is "ho-hum" or worth being proud of. Apparently not everyone agrees, but I think it's pretty good for a rebuilding season.

Although I always hope for more, my point is that a 20 win team, with games left to be played, should be interesting to follow with deep discussions of opponents and match-ups, etc. and when it is a young team and a rebuilding season, there is also a lot of future to speculate about.

I am a football first fan and have been for decades, but basketball is exciting as well. And, amazingly, I can get my wife to watch basketball.

And - 20 wins out of 26 games played so far kind of has this team right on track to hit 77%.

I like round numbers. Hope this team wins 3/4 or better. Sure wish we could have USU and LMU back.

Careful what you wish for, we may see LMU again soon.

Count your blessings! I wish our standard was 20 wins - unfortunately, it's just to be representative. Here we are, tied with you guys for third in the conference and we didn't have 2000 in Gersten until mid way through the first half.

20 wins isn't something to be proud of. It's barely acceptable. If we finished with just 20 wins, that would be the same as finishing with 8 football wins. That's the bare minimum. The question is whether 10 football or 24 basketball wins is "ho-hum." I don't think either is ho-hum and both should be well thought of.

And yes it is VERY good to get to 24 wins in a rebuilding season.

Is this really a "rebuilding year"? Or is it just life without Jimmer? Well and Jax, to.

BUt with BD and NH--and CA, who, yes, is not as strong without J and J, how is this a rebuilding year?

Will improvement from MC, AW, DH, and NA be so big between next year and this year that we fill the void that will be the loss of our best player this year in NH?

I'm nervous. Who replaces 18 points per night next year? THaws? I hope so. And what about CA's defense? Not Thaws, he was a little soft on D. But maybe this is for another thread.

24 wins for this team is a "ho hum, hmmmm, what could have been...?" But good and respectable nonetheless.

If we were to beat GU on their floor and the other games and the first round of WCC tourney, we would be at 25 wins. If we really congeal and pull off a WCC tourney win and end 27-6. That be far away from ho hum. Go Cougs.

I rounded down. 32*.77 was 24.64.

It's obvious that you hate Bronco Mendenhall. You made it easier for Coach Rose to "win 77% of his games" by twisting the math. How whiny and classless of you. (TIC)

I guess we have different definitions of what is acceptable then, which doesn't surprise me as I tend to think most BYU fans are terribly spoiled with our teams' perennial success. In my mind having a winning season at all is never a given, an 8-win season is very good, a 10-11 win season is spectacular, and undefeated is a statistical improbability (and deserves its place as a lifetime achievement). That doesn't mean I'm happy with an 8-win team that had lots of potential, but I would never set it as the across-the-board standard bare minimum. Considering who we had to replace on this team and the resulting team identity issues, 20 wins is something to be proud of, even if it doesn't represent the total potential that this team would have if firing on all cylinders.

Yes, to all.

Jimmer and Jackson _were_ the team last year. That's not to say we didn't have great players doing good things, but there's no question that they had to rediscover their roles and chemistry together. Not to mention that Jimmer is often overstated and Jackson understated in their impact on BYU's final scores. Sure, Jimmer added 25+ points to each score, but Jackson usually subtracted near that amount from the other team's leading scorer (especially with perimeter defense, something we've struggled with this year), not to mention his record-high steals and his own point production. Between offense and defense Jackson and Jimmer accounted for 40-60 points per game. I'd say you can count their loss as something we needed to rebuild.
