Bronco at the signing day press conference

Wrubel tweeted the following from Bronco's presser:



Bronco, on Tanner Mangum: "How refreshing to have a QB that highly-rated, thankful to have an offer from BYU...not entitled, but thankful."



Wow, that wasn't even an underhanded dig at Heaps. He might as well have used Heaps name when he made the comment about entitlement.

I'm not sure how I feel about this comment from Bronco. On the one hand, Heaps has a Texas-sized ego and has very real entitlement issues. On the other hand, I'm not sure it's right for a coach to come out and say that about one of his former players.



Maybe it's being taken out of context, but it sure sounds like a dig at Heaps.

Yeah. Move on Bronco. Is Heaps transfer going to be the new booing during his first game? Something that Bronco can't really let go and will continually make references or allude to?

The funny thing is that Mangum has not even set foot on the practice field yet for BYU, so how does Bronco really know? It was a cheap shot and was not thought out too well.

I think he is emphasizing a point. Fans want the 5* guys, Bronco has been criticized for saying he wants guys that want to be at BYU. This is a perfect example of a guy who wants to be at BYU and is highly rated. I actually like it when Bronco hangs his feelings on his shirt sleeve. It shows he is human.

Does a kid have to step on the practice field to have already made demands about playing time or not?

I agree. Bronco may not always think through his comments befor he speaks, but he usually has a positive, rather than a negative message in mind. I think that he was thinking about what a fine young man Mangum is, not anything bad about Heaps.

Entitlement seems to be one of the key detriments of the rising generation. While it also applies to heaps, It's hardly limited to him.

I don't suppose that we can definatively say that he "feels" entitled, but we can certainly say that he showed all the outward signs of considering himself entitled.

Just by transferring? I don't recall much entitlement talk last year.

No. It describeD Heaps. He no longer wants to be at BYU, so he isn't at BYU.

Possible it is out of context but it seems pretty clear it was aimed at heaps. I know how I feel about that. It is below a coach to say something like that. I was embarassed for him and lost a little bit of respect for him.



I guess there is a small possibility that we wasn't referring to heaps, but I think its fair to say he was and that he was wrong to say it.

There have been others who have felt entitled. I think it was not just Heaps he was refering to.

I have no problem with him saying something like this, but only once.



Now it's out there, it's public, and future recruits and the fans are on notice.



That done, it's time to move on.

Why am I not surprised you sided with Bronco? 8)

Maybe all the fans should move on past criticizing Bronco for not moving on. Is the entitlement comment going to become this year's "Pharisee"? Something that the fans can't really let go and will continually make references or allude to?



Or are we all too thin-skinned for that?

I guess I have a few thoughts on this:



1) Isn't Bronco saying this showing a bit of entitlement on his part? And maybe that is ok. Perhaps given the stewarship he has of the program he would be foolish not to feel and verbalize it.



2) If it was directed at Heaps and the media question Bronco about it in the future I hope he is prepared to be accountable for his statement.



3) If he is so concerned about the players prepaing themselves for each game and not worrying about what happened last week or the opponent this week, why is he not setting the example to them by stating things more about what he needs to do better as a coach to recognize the entitled players and not let it happen again?

Hate to say it, but this was a classless comment. First, he's being totally insincere to Mangum (which Mangum will pick up on), but more importantly he's kicking a kid that's world was totally turned upside down possibly as a result of his decision to trust Bronco and join BYU.



Bronco made a similar type of comment about Manti Te'o. That one could have some actual consequences next season both on and off the field. I could see the press running with Bronco's mormon judgee comment about Manti (the face of ND) to hype up the game.
