Worst Refs Ever

First off, we didn't lose tonight because of the officiating. We lost because we can't hit the broad side of a barn more than 12 ft away from the hoop and because BYU decided to show up and play 20 min too late.



That said, that was the worst officiating I have ever seen. I thought the game at Moraga was bad. This takes the cake. I miss our MWC refs. Glad Rose showed some fight and if I had been there I likely would have been throwing stuff at the refs too. Ridiculous.



Loved the student chant.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out the chant too. Those refs were morons---they let the game get physically and emotionally out of control way too early in the game.

Correct. It was pretty funny with about 2 minutes to go. The majority of people participated for about 15 seconds. No question the officials heard it.



I agree with the original post. We lost because our shooting was horrific and our rebounding was worse.



The officiating was terrible. Laughably so at times. We still win the game if we could shoot and rebound.

Lets just say the refer we've seen all year but particularly tonight will make it easy to "burn bridges" with the WCC when the time comes. Anytime a conference officials makes you wish you had MWC or PAC officials you know it's a dire.

In my entire life I never thought I'd hear the phrase "I miss the MWC refs" uttered by a Cougar fan!

Maybe i'm misremembering but my recollection is the refs were worse in moraga. Either way we could have made it a game with just a few less bone headed mistakes. I think in every loss so far we've let at least one out their perimeter guys get hot for like for or five treys.

3 point offense and 3 point defense for that matter. cant blame that on the refs, but yes the crowd was chanting "worse refs ever". I ve never heard that in a fair amount of years attending byu games.

I want to add my opinion regarding the exceedingly incompetent reffing performance that was the St. Mary's at BYU debacle Saturday. The refs were awful -- but I am extremely disappointed that the crowd was throwing so much crap toward (and onto) the floor. Believe me, I was irate over some of the calls (a particular gem that stands out is the dramatic fall by Delededozerbobozer's trip-n-fall at the start of the 2nd half that quickly morphed into a 5 point possession). And while it would be tough not to join in with the frenzy and throw some crap, too, it is not becoming of good sportsmanship and for that reason, BYU fans should have refrained from the throwing. I would hope that I'd have the will power to resist joining in with the trash fest.

Charging is the hardest call to make and the WCC refs have a tough time with it. Have some fun-turn on ESPN during the Saturday broadcasts, turn the volume off and then make the right call yourself after the replay, without any school preference. You'll be surprised by the result. It's not just the WCC.

Well, like any hoops fan, we'll get it right 100% of the time in our head, the broadcasters will be wrong if they disagree with us :lol:

I've learned to accept the charging calls this season, but the phantom trips in this game were ridiculous. There must have been at least 3 times BYU got called for a trip or push when the SMC player was simply out of control. We definitely lost this game ourselves, but we still could have and likely would have made a game of it in the closing minutes had the refs not been so poor. The call on Carlino when the guy pushed him off was an obvious bad call followed by rose's T. We were down 9 and could have made it 6 or 7, instead they went up double digits and it was over.



Another note, when was the last time Rose got a T? He usually goes out of his way to stay calm.

I was under the impression that the WCC used PAC12 Refs. Were these guys actually WCC ref's? I go crazy with this charging call. It seems there must be some kind of emphasis on this call this year. Guys are flopping like crazy. The slightest brush and the guy goes down. I don't even like it when Davis does it. It gets me the most when the defensive player begins to fall before the contact, however so slight, happens. Our game was bad but you can watch any NCAA game and you'll see the same thing. The flopping has just gotten out of hand. :skeptic:

So - I think what Old is suggesting is that if the refs blow the whistle every time someone falls, a smart coach and smart players would take note and flop every time they feel a breeze rather than whine about it. Now if they do not call it both ways - then all you can do is whine and boo and write letters - but don't throw stuff.



I listened on KSL due to not being near a TV, but after calling a questionable flagrant 1 when one of our guys supposedly grabbed one of theirs breaking away in heavy traffic, Davies later got grabbed from behind in no traffic breaking away and no flagrant 1 was called. If announcers are correct, that inconsistency is what would wind up Dave Rose.

It's hard not to get wound up, for the fans or coaches, when the refs are so bad. I've learned from my many years with the WCC that it only does you harm to boo or yell at the refs. It got so bad at the Gonzaga/LMU game in the semis of the WCC tournament two years ago that I almost got tossed for going up to Dave Libby, the WCC commissioner of offiicials seated next to the scorer's table and yelled at him that he should be ashamed for allowing such incompetent refs to work the game. His assistant called security who tried to remove me but Libby told them just to let me go back to my seat.



He's a former Final Four ref who demanded to be at the center of attention. I think that has rubbed off on the terrible refs he has for the conference games. I guarantee you that any questioning of their calls, booing or yelling, will instead of working for you, only cost you.



We can only accept it until someone demands better refs. I don't honestly know who that will be.

It's not just BYU's shooting that's gone down the toilet. I've noticed a lot of top teams getting killed, and shooting awful. Check out the MSU vs Illinois stats tonight. Sheesh, that is awful--by both teams.



BYU will come back, they have shooters, they'll start hitting again.
