What do you do?

What do you do as a coach when a team continues against very good teams to fall flat? I'm wondering what the remedy is to BYU's shooting blues. Greg Wrubell sounds every bit as baffled how a team could shoot at a certain percentage for the whole non-conference portion of their schedule and then suddenly deflate to the point of not being able to knock down anything 3-point related.



Extremely frustrating team to watch. I did't go to the game tonight for just this reason. It is one thing when you can't, but altogether another story when you did and now can't. BYU has always had, and continues to have, the uncanny ability to bring out the best in shooting of the teams we play.

Two things. Get the guards to get layups or mid range jumpers before shooting 3's. Also put Winder in as he hit his 3 and plays better D.

Guards need to penetrate. They need to start making shots, not just chucking up outside shots hoping to make some. They need to stop shooting threes and start driving to the basket.

Part of the problem is BYU is not the normally great FT shooting team we have been - so driving to the hoop and drawing the foul doesn't pay as well as it did last year. Hard to understand why our guards are not nails from the line. That is also keeping Nate Austin from being used more.

Zylstra and Carlino combined to go 0-9. The rest of the team was 2-4. So put those two on the bench and play Cusick and Winder more until they start making them in practice again or stop shooting them in games.

That's funny. I typed "Carlino", realized I meant to type "Cusick", went back and erased Carlino, and then re-typed Carlino. It's not my fault they both begin with a C!

Yeah. I think at this point (five games of awful shooting) you have to start tinkering with lineups and minutes of guys.

I don't understand why Rose doesn't just pull a player when they run down the court and start throwing up brick-bound threes and sit him on the bench. It seems like they come in groups at times (the bricks that is). Anyone remember the movie Hoosiers? Oh, and I don't think I know better then Rose... just doesn't make sense to me.

It just seems interesting, and sad, that the team is getting worse as the season goes on. At one point we were about 18th in both KenPom and Sagarin predictor (neither of which factor in W/L record), and now we're about 35th in both...

BYU is built to run down the court and launch 3s. We play transition basketball and have a roster full of shooters. These are the type of players we recruit, Rose prefers. When shots are falling, no one complains as it's high octane fun and few teams can keep up with us.



Rose teaches and encourages shooting. Every player has the green light. So, benching a player for doing what you recruited him to do and what you go over in practice doesn't make any sense.



Again, no one would be complaining if the shots were falling.

Rose can and should sit the kids who are rushing up and shooting off balance, rushed 3 pointers early in the shot clock. If you can come up and get a great shot, by all means, take it and make it. But if not, let the team do its job.

Cusick is not the answer. Running, and getting into open court is the answer. BYU recruits shooters and runners. We have stopped doing that, and we have stopped winning against good teams.



Last years BYU team would smoke this years team. Even if you add Jackson and Jimmer, and have them play a lackadaisical "half court" offense, the run and gun (and sometimes turn the ball over) BYU would beat this years halfcourt version by about 30 points.



Get more aggresive on D (Cusick and Zylstra not the answer there), get turnovers, and run until the other team can't move...



That is BYU basketball. This weak half court and no defense stuff is a travesty.



No one was complaining last year when BYU was shooting 10 seconds into the shot clock. BYU had an identity last year. They were going to score more points than you. Period. By hard nosed defense, and flat out running over around and through you. This years team has none of that (except for Carlino, Winder, and Harrison - who I feel would run the entire game if they had to).

Couldn't agree more.



Wonder how much of this is Pope's influence. I know we have some great bigs this season, but those two ran the floor just fine in seasons' past.



I worry the style we're playing now will set us back a season or two. Our young guards are not getting any better and rather than learn and get used to the run 'n gun they're busy playing half court sets.



Anyone that's doubting the difference in style need not look any further than UNLV this season with Rice now at the helm.

They are not recruited to shoot off balance or anytime / anywhere. It is situational. Open shots in the flow of the game in the range of the particular player - yes - fire away. Fast break - take it if it is there. If it is not drive or pass inside and kick it out if the inside shot isn't there. That is what they practice.
