I do not know the answer. Travel and honeydos made me miss segments of recent games where BYU looked awful at times with spurts of brilliance.



And then we hear all of the opinions about who can defend and who cannot and who gets the ball up the court and who turns it over and who fits the team identity and who does not and who is a waste of space and who has potential and who does not.



And this is all about the guards and a little about 3 spot clouded with injuries there.



Which guards were starting when we spotted huge leads in the opening minutes vs LMU and Pepperdine. Which guards were playing when Pepperdine roared from being down a bunch in the 2nd half and made it very close again. Conversely, which guards held VT without a field goal for about 10 minutes while BYU built a huge lead. Which guards were playing when VT roared back?



It is a team sport, and the tem really stunk in all of those spots but one and really shined in that spot. So is there a pattern of which guard combo is leading the team to self-destruct vs the combo that lead the team to put VZt on their heels on their home court.



If there is no clear pattern, maybe they are all inexperienced and thus hot and cold or named Abouo who is streaky even though steeped in experience.

Did Saint Mary get into the heads of all of our guards and make them start hearing footsteps even when they are actually open for shots?

Yes



Which of our guys were playing during the horrible streaks? Is there any pattern? That would help me agree who should get less PT - especially if it was different guys on the floor dominating VT in the opening minutes - thus deserving more PT.



If there is no pattern - then Rose is probably doing the best rotation possible with his inexperienced guards.

In general Carlino, Zylstra, Cusick and Abouo have been on the floor for the negative runs. But they have also been a part of positive runs. Harrison and Winder haven't been on the floor very much in the games you referenced. The pattern seems to depend on the individual matchups. Cusick and Zylstra are effective again bad D-1 players and make few mistakes. Against better talent they get overwhelmed with their inferior quickness.



IMO we should be bring Zylstra off the bench. He needs to guard SF's. Abouo needs to guard whomever is the best perimeter player. I don't think we can count on Rodgers for the rest of the year. So I guess you start Harrison so you can bring Winder off the bench at either guard position.



Rose is an offensive minded coach. His more talented guards are more of defensive players. Maybe he just needs to trust Davies and Hartsock to carry the load more.

I think there is too much worry about who is causing us to lose. I think we will win with any of the guards provided he is hitting his shots. We have had a close call with Pep. and a loss to LMU because of poor outside shooting. Ball gets kicked out and the 3pt shot is missed. It almost happened again and we would have lost the VT game had it not been for FT's. I think we lost to St. Mary's because of three factors, first the fouls. They made 24/30 we made 9/16. St. Mary's shot 16 FT's in the first half! So why the disparity I don't know. Were our guys really that out of control? Second we shot too many inside shots. We had 55 2p attempts making 26 (47%) compared to 19/31 (61%) for St Mary's while we made 7/13 (56%) 3pt shots. St Mary's 12/25 (48%). We had a higher 3pt make average in the game. The third reason was no NCAA team coming into that building that night would have beaten them and I mean nobody. They beat us on making their shots. They had more DefRB's because they didn't miss many shots. Any team shooting like that is going to win. Kind of reminds me of the Wisc game where one guy really shined. The big difference was that the guy from Wisc was a known shooter, whereas the guy from SM was only shooting 19% from 3pt coming into the game.



I give Rose and especially Davies and Hartsock credit for the win vs VT. We lost to LMU because we didn't overcome the guard shooting and Pep was too weak at team for it to lead to a loss but against VT we should have lost that game except for clutch FT's from Davies (taking it up strong and not just throwing it up) and Hartsock getting enough touches.



I do have one gripe however and that is the inbound play. Against pressure I wish Rose would have a tall guard pass it in and have Carlino the target and then Hartsock if Carlino isn't open. And stop passing it into a trap! We almost gave the game away to SMC last year and almost did the same vs VT this year. And why pass the ball into a 60% FT shooter? Pass it in to hartsock, let him go high to get it and he is excellent passer and is over 80% on FT's.



We hold SMC to a much lower shooting %, their season average and shoot from 3 like our average and we win the game (provided they don't get double the FTA's that we do).



Anyways, that my two cents.
