Saw this on Fox news. Can you imagine the cougar being offensive. Just rejecting the student vote for the Cougar perpetuates what ever negative stereotype the women there might have.



A sad day for Cougars!

The Canyons school district is a joke.

I heard about it on CNBC today.

saw it on drudgereport today. Ridiculous. If cougar is offensive, those schools with "beaver" or "cocks" mascots better watch out.

What do you want to beat there's some inebriated Utes on the school board there.

That school board has to be extremely embarrassed right about now. Talk about being in the news for something really stupid.



The surprising thing is that I saw a link to the Board, and there were plenty of BYU grads on the board, some USU grads, but few U grads. So it was strange. Stupidity really.

I live in the canyon's school district and, yes, it is a joke. A very big one.

There are other mascots to choose and other reasons not to choose cougars than the offensive to woman excuse.

They made a few mistakes that they are getting to deal with now. One was to have hte future students "vote" for the mascot. They after said it was just a nomination with the board making the real decision.



The other mistake was saying they were rejecting cougar due to the woman thing. If they had said they wanted a unique mascot rather than one used by a local college and 3 high schools already, this would have blown over.



As a poor west-sider in Jordan District, this just adds some humor to the pretty deep divide caused by the division!

I actually like both the feline and the cultural connotations.

If you read the official memo leading to the decision, the primary reason was the fact that the school colors are Navy Blue, Silver, and White, and they were worried about their school spirit being mistaken for BYU spirit--an understandable concern that I can see even the BYU grads understanding.



The mention of the double-entendre of "cougar" is an aside in passing, mentioned only as one sentence as an addition to the confusion-with-BYU concern.



This is just another instance of the MSM taking a comment in passing that likely had nothing to do with the final decision and making it seem like it was the driving force of the decision.



If they were really worried about pop-culture double meanings, they would have run away from "Chargers" (which can refer to a certain sex act to get the day going), and like if any of them had ever read the book Papillon, "Charger" would have made "Cougar" look pretty tame.

Why have the students vote if you're not actually going to let them choose? If you already know what your school colors are and you're concerned about being mistaken for a local university (still don't understand why this is a bad thing), then why have that mascot on the ballot as one of the choices? The whole thing is a stupid, bureaucratic mess that could have easily been avoided, but now everyone in the country has seen how ridiculously over-managed Canyons is and how they've lost sight of what's really important in education.

Saw this on Conan too. He said they didn't like the name "Cougar" because it was deragatory towards woman, so instead they changed their mascot to, "The Hot MILFS".
