BYU's Defensive Stats since USU 2010

On average, BYU's opponents have gained 73.8 less yards on offense than they have against their average.



On only two occasions (CSU 2010 and Utah 2011) has the opponent's offense had a better day against BYU. That leaves Bronco at 18 for 20 (90%).

BYU vs TCU 2011:

TCU had 136 yards rushing on 39 carries for 3.5 ypc.

TCU had 147 yards passing on 23 attempts for 6.4 ypa.

TCU had 283 total yards on 62 plays for 4.6 ypp.



For the season they ran for an averaged 208.6 yards per game on 40.1 carries for 5.1 ypc.

For the season they threw for an averaged 231.6 yards on 26.9 attempts for 8.6 ypa.

For the season they averaged 440.2 yards on 67 plays for 6.5 ypp.



Their offense sucks because since BYU doesn't have a good defense, it must be their offense that explains the 34.8% drop in the rushing attack and the 36.5% drop in the passing attack and the 35.7% drop in offensive attack.



They must had padded all their offensive stats against bad teams.

This answers my question much better than name-calling. Those are pretty dang amazing-looking numbers right there. Though it is still a little difficult to tell how far below the line is "Top 40%" and how far is "Top 10% defense", statistically speaking, if you understand what I'm trying to say. It sure looks good.



Too bad our offense didn't always look like that in 2011...



Any idea if prior years under Bronco were this comparable?

On average, Patterson's defense held opponents to about 51 yards below average.



Obviously last year wasn't TCU's best defense, but in comparing Bronco and Patterson, you have other factors that make the comparison difficult - namely, quality of athletes.

Nothing like factual information to answer a question. Someone asked if 2010 was the same for BYU. Not before Bronco fired Hill, but after was similar.



Someone commented about the offense. Under Riley, BYU generally outperformed opponents defensive averages - but not as consistently or significantly.

A little worse than LSU against Alabama. Makes you wonder if NM could get a yard on Bama.

We lead 35 to 0 against CSU at the half and up 42 to 7 after 3 quarters. I don't feel bad about letting them have a few extra yards.



How do we stack up with scoring defense?

I'm embarrassed that I don't know this off the top of my head, but Hill became the DC in '08, right?



Anyways, I'm somewhat skeptical about that '03 stat for a few reasons -



- none of my preferred databases go that far back. I had to use box scores on cougarstats.com to get the BYU stats - every box score that far back has a different format. It's entirely possible that I used a "passing yard' stat for a total yard stat or something like that. I double checked, but some of those games don't seem right (we apparently DOMINATED USC on defense compared to other teams that year). I wasn't a big football fan, though, so maybe our defense was really legit that year, but our O sucked.



- Keep in mind that the BSU blizzard game and the Utah 3-0 game were that year. Bronco was getting some divine assistance from the elements on D. ;)



All other years should be 100% accurate, though.
